An Update on My Husband’s Mission Trip

June 6, 2013 By: Stephanie3 Comments

My husband, Eddie, left for Burkino Faso last Sunday. He is there with a team from our church. They are working to get clean drinking water to a village. Eddie was very excited to be able to apply his skills as a civil engineer to design the holding tank. For the few weeks that he is there he is working with a small group of men from our church to supervise construction of the tank. They have started a blog about their journey, but haven’t been able to update it yet.

Internet access is limited, but he posted this status on Facebook earlier today.

Making great progress on the concrete water tower. Today we got almost the entire rebar cage built, forms set for the slab, outlet pipe installed and propped the cage up so its ready for concrete tomorrow. Another great day of weather, but it was HOT. I am impressed by the work ethic of the Burkinabe…such hard workers and most of them are volunteering for the sake of the village. Thanks everyone for your prayers and support!

I am SOOOOOOO grateful that we live in the internet age and we have been able to communicate fairly easily with Skype and Facebook messaging almost every day. Otherwise, I would be going out of my mind.

Here are a few of the pictures that were posted by one of the full-time missionaries who are hosting Eddie’s group. (The first one is my favorite. He’s like my very own Indiana Jones.)

Photos used with permission.

Burkina Faso 1 Burkina Faso 2 Burkino faso 3 burkino Faso 4 Burkino faso 5

The terrain is too rough for motor vehicles, so they have to use donkey carts to haul the materials. Apparently some women from the village are also volunteering to cart containers of sand and gravel on their heads.

It makes you take a minute to reflect on the things we take for granted, like turning on the faucet so that our kids can brush their teeth with clean water.

We have felt so uplifted this week. It must be all of the prayers coming from you because I have no other explanation. I haven’t experienced any of the anxiety I expected (although I don’t love being alone at night) and Nicholas has not had any problems adjusting, which is a small miracle in and of itself. The girls have been fine as well. The only thing that was a big concern to me was that the team was supposed to stop in Istanbul to catch their flight to Africa, and there is a lot of civil unrest in that area right now. But at the last minute they were re-routed because of the weather and got to go through France instead.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support for the next few weeks!

Mall Tours

June 5, 2013 By: Stephaniecomment

I was reflecting on stuff to do with my kids this summer. Join a pool? Enroll in a camp? Hmmm…what did I do when I was younger?

Duh. I hung out with my bestie, Lauren, and we made it our mission in life to drag our parents to malls across America and try to collect autographs from the entire cast of Full House. Because, really, there is nothing sweeter in life than waiting in line for 3 hours so that Candace Cameron can sign a picture you tore out of Big Bopper magazine.

autographs

Thank you to the parents and grandparents that indulged this habit and waited in line with us for hours. They were probably just grateful that we were happy to be somewhere with air conditioning. Alas, we were never able to tack down the Olsen twins (I’m half proud and half mortified to admit that I was an actual card-carrying member of their fan club), but we did hang out all day at a car convention once for the chance to meet Nate Richart from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. So there’s that.

Unfortunately I don’t have any of my memorabilia (hence why all the pictures say “to Lauren”) but the memories of standing in line with thousands of other adoring fans, eating Auntie Anne’s pretzels and sipping Orange Julius?

Priceless.

So, on the off chance that the cast of Good Luck Charlie decides to do a mall tour of the east coast this summer, you’ll know where to find me with my kids.

Well, that’s one way to respond to a come-on

June 4, 2013 By: Stephanie12 Comments

I was missing my husband today-he’s safely in Africa now- so I was going through old emails and Facebook messages. (The modern day way to sort through a box of love letters.)   I was a little sad because I couldn’t reach him tonight and now it’s pretty late in their time zone. Then I found this and couldn’t stop laughing.

This is a screen shot of an actual conversation. He was downstairs working and I was upstairs and had finished putting the kids to bed. Also, I was pretty pregnant with Penny, so there’s an extra special visual for you.

marriage

Who says romance is dead?

Thanks for making me laugh through my tears even when you’re not here, babe.

It’s ALWAYS a good time for a poop joke.

P.S. As usual, I was right. Caps lock IS gross.

Submission: Why I’m Reading 50 Shades of Grey (again)

May 30, 2013 By: Stephanie11 Comments

This week is pretty intense for our family. In three days my husband will  leave on a missions trip to Burkino Faso, a country in west Africa, with our church. He will be gone for more than half the month of June, using his skills as a professional engineer to help build a water tank in a place that does not currently have running water. It means he has a lot of responsibilities to wrap up this week for work and the house we are currently building as well as the trip itself. It also means I’ll be playing the single-parent role for a while. I don’t have a problem parenting my own kids, but Nicholas’ attachment concerns make times like this very, very difficult at home. The reactions from some people closest to us have been less than supportive, which is discouraging. They think they are coming from a place of love and concern, but it is actually a place of fear.

So what did I do this week to help with the preparations? I sat on my butt and looked at porn.

I’m not being sarcastic, that actually is what I did. And it helped a lot, although probably not in the way that you think.

I want to be loving and supportive and altruistic throughout this process, but the reality is that I am selfish and it is hard. It’s hard to be the one left behind to absorb the consequences of having daddy leave, although we know he is doing it for a good cause. It is hard to watch your health savings account disappear into yellow fever shots and malaria medication (Did you know those shots and pills cost thousands of dollars? Because they do.) and your husband’s vacation time get sucked away into a trip around the world that only one of you gets to take. To sit at home and twiddle your thumbs and worry about his safety. It’s even harder to do with three very young kids, especially when one of them has special needs.

I could have easily said no, but I didn’t. Because he’s my husband and he feels called to do something purposeful, something bigger than himself and right now my job is not to question or deny.  My job is to obey. And it makes me uncomfortable.

I come from a generation of self-sufficient women who are appalled by the idea of having to obey our husbands. I know I left it out of my marriage vows on purpose and I can’t recall a wedding I’ve attended recently where it has been said. But sometimes it just has to be done because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes he really does need to shine and I need to be content in a supporting role. When I reached that place I was left seeking wisdom and finding nothing but resistance. Can you think of any modern examples of strong women in loving relationships who are trying to teach themselves to learn obedience? I couldn’t. Well, except for one…

So this week I re-read the entire 50 Shades of Grey trilogy, and do you know what? It actually helped a lot. Go figure.

I still don’t think the books are particularly well-written and I realize they are complete smut, but walking with Ana on her journey to understand and, yes, even obey her husband without losing her sense of self was cathartic and gave me a great deal of clarity.

And so far my husband hasn’t complained about  the side effects. 😉

Things To Do In Charlotte, North Carolina

May 23, 2013 By: Stephanie2 Comments

I promised you that I would give you more details about our mini-vacation and things to do in Charlotte, North Carolina…so here they are. 🙂

I WON a 3-night stay at the Double Tree. We had our own suite. I’m pretty sure it was bigger than some of my friends’ city apartments. It was awesome. I’d totally recommend it. The only negative was that whoever was staying in the room over ours seemed to have a passion for exercising at 6am, so we had a hard time sleeping in. It’s ok, you can put your tiny violin away, I’m not going to be complaining about anything on our kid-free long weekend.

We drove from PA, so we didn’t actually get to Charlotte until about 1am. They gave us cookies when we checked in and we went straight to bed.

Friday morning we got up and showered and headed out to explore.

The first thing we did was get to Sonny’s as soon as they opened. This was one of Eddie’s favorite lunch places when we lived in Tampa, so he was over the moon to find one in Charlotte. They have great barbeque and really affordable lunch time meal specials. I know it’s a chain and not true North Carolina barbeque, but to him it was a taste of our former home.

charlotte nc vacation 3

From there we decided to go to the nature museum. We wanted to see the wildlife and native plants because we’re big nerds. It turns out that it was actually a children’s museum and they thought we were creepy for being “unaccompanied adults” in their establishment.  They made my husband leave his license at the front desk.

If you are ever vacationing in Charlotte with kids, it would be a great place to check out! The elementary school science teacher in me loved it. I would definitely go back with my own kids if we are ever in Charlotte again.

charlotte nc vacation 4

We didn’t do much inside, but they did have an awesome nature trail that we hiked.

This is what Eddie does when I ask him to take a picture with me. Punk.

charlotte nc vacation 1

The museum also had a great butterfly pavilion.

charlotte nc vacation 2

Then we drove around and looked at the architecture of different older neighborhoods.

We also went to the mall that was across the street from the hotel. Eddie needed clothes for the mission trip he will be on next month and I got my eyebrows waxed. Fun times.

Friday night we had an early dinner reservation at Ruth’s Chris (That’s “our” place because we had our wedding reception at the Ruth’s Chris in Baltimore.) and then I went to the cocktail party for the blog conference I was attending.

Saturday I was in Bloggy Boot Camp all day. Eddie played golf at Ballantyne and then another course that he drove to South Carolina to play.

That night we walked across the street and had dinner at a really nice Italian restaurant in a shopping area directly across from the hotel. I didn’t write down the name of the restaurant, but I wish I had. They made all of their own pasta and the spinach lasagna was AMAZING.

Sunday we left around 9:30 am and spent all day driving home. We did get to have our first experience with Bojangles chicken and biscuits on the drive home. The sweet tea was pretty awesome and they had free WiFi, so I was a happy camper.

I wish we we would have had more time to check out some other things to do in Charlotte, but our trip was only a few days this time and one of those days I needed to spend in the conference.

How to heal your heels for flip-flop season

May 14, 2013 By: Stephanie22 Comments

tips for how to heal dry and cracked feet

Warning: This post is full of nasty pictures of my feet.

My feet are gross. They are the only part of my body that my husband truly cannot stand. They are SUPER dry and my heels crack and sometimes bleed.

How to heal dry, cracked feet

Once, as a gift, my mom even gave me a cream meant for a cow’s udders, hoping it would help. It didn’t.

Yes, I have already had a pedicure this year (and paid extra for the “scraping”) and  my heels still looked like this:

healing dry feet

Yuck. I know.

But then I read somewhere (I think it was a Facebook comment on a recipe) that coconut oil made a great moisturizer, so I decided to try it on my heels.

Method #1: Coconut Oil

We had this one on hand because it is what I like to use to pop our popcorn. They sell it at our regular grocery store. You can also buy it here.

I’ll walk you through how I use it in case you need to heal your heels too.

coconut oil for dry feet

It is solid in the container and looks like this

coconut oil

I use about a teaspoon’s worth for each foot.

I spread it on with a washcloth because I don’t like the way it makes my hands feel greasy for hours if I use my fingers.

coconut oil on heals

Grease up your feet and put on a pair of socks. Otherwise you will slip and fall trying to walk on laminate or tile floors. Not that I would know. (Yeah, I totally fell on my butt the first time.)

This is after 2 treatments. I’m going to continue twice a day every day until Thursday. There are still a few small cracks in the back right now. Hopefully after a few more treatments I won’t be too embarrassed to break out the flip-flops when we are in North Carolina for Bloggy Boot Camp this weekend!

healing dry feet with coconut oil

I should also note that I have REALLY sensitive, fair skin. I can’t even use most laundry detergents without breaking out in hives. The coconut oil is very gentle and doesn’t cause me any irritation. It also doesn’t have any odor, which is a plus.

Method #2: Stridex and Vaseline

I have also had very good luck in the past with a tip I leaned on an old episode of the Oprah show. The doctor on the show said to use a Stridex pad (if I remember correctly, the dermatologist on the show said it has to be Stridex because the active ingredient in those pads was a little different than other brands), and then coating my feet with Vaseline and sleeping in a pair of white cotton socks. After about a week of using that method my feet were perfect!

Let me know if you try either one of these tips and how they work for you!

Hello Monday

May 13, 2013 By: Stephaniecomment

I’m joining Lisa Leonard for her Hello Monday link-up.

I’ve been looking forward to this week for months, so it seemed like an appropriate time to jump in and say…

Hello to a week with only 3 “work” days.

Hello to more progress on our future home.

building a new house

Hello to the possibility of signing on the line for a temporary summer apartment (with a pool!) that would shorten Eddie’s commute by over an hour each way and give us back our family time.

Hello to the spa gift card I got for Mother’s Day.

Hello to a much-needed (and FREE!) get-away with my husband and my first ever blog conference. I’ve been reeling since October at the fact that I WON a trip to the Bloggy Boot Camp of my choice this year. I chose Charlotte, NC and the week is here!

Hello to the kindergartner’s parent/teacher conference this afternoon.

Hello to a toddler who seems to be learning 3 or 4 new words every day.

penny pooh

And Hello to a few more weeks of watching this through the window, while we have such a great back-yard here at my in-laws.

back yard fishing

Hope you all had a great Mother’s Day weekend. And remember, it’s not too late to sign up for my newsletter and get your free eBook.

My Stitch Fix Experience

May 2, 2013 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Back in February I tried Stitch Fix for the first time. I was really excited about the idea of having clothes delivered to my door so that I didn’t have to deal with the pain of shopping with three kids.

I’m going to two blog conferences this year (The first one is in just two weeks!) and I’m having a little bit of anxiety over what to wear. I have never been before, but I have visions of showing up looking all plain jane and everyone else wearing adorable handmade vintage clothes they bought from secret Etsy stores where all the cool kids (read: not me) shop. I was really excited when my first fix arrived a day early, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

stitchfix1

I thought Stitch fix might be a great option to get some trendy pieces that still felt like my style. Here is what they sent in my first fix:

stitch fix example 1

Yeah, I modeled these without brushing my hair or putting on any make up. Sue me. I liked this shirt a lot. It was really comfortable and the collared look was not something I would have chosen, but I liked it once it was on. I thought it had the most flattering fit of all the pieces they sent. It’s the only piece that lets you see the actual shape of my body. Plus it reminded me of something Zooey Deschanel would wear on New Girl and I loved that. However, I did not like that it was completely see through. I hate having to layer clothes because it makes extra laundry for me. If the material would have been thicker I would have kept this one, but I couldn’t justify paying $50 for a shirt that felt like it came from Forever 21.

stitch fix example 2

This striped shirt tied for my least favorite piece. The fabric was terrible, like a scratchy outdoor cushion, it was totally see-though (again) and it was also pretty expensive. All of the items in my fix were between $50-75 dollars. I felt like this was the most uncomfortable piece to actually wear and it wasn’t very flattering on my body type.

stitch fix example 3

I HATED this one. I don’t even have one good thing to say about it. You can see in my face, I’m pretty annoyed. It’s like a bad maternity shirt, completely see through (AGAIN) and expensive to boot. Definitely the most unflattering thing I have ever put on my body. I’m really not sure I believe that a professional stylist could have possibly chosen this for someone on purpose.

stitch fix example 5

This black one I actually liked and it was pretty comfortable. But it showed off too much of the ladies and again it was a bit pricey for the type of material. I also felt like it made me look bigger than I actually am, which is always a negative. Back it went.

stitch fix example 6

This white sweater is the only piece I chose to keep. I needed a white sweater anyway and I liked the placement of the pockets and the material is not too heavy or too flimsy. This is actually the sweater I wore to my first book signing.

book signing

Now that I have had some time to reflect, my final thoughts on Stitch Fix Are:

PROs-

*I actually liked 3 out of 5 of the items they sent and I kept one. Not bad for the first time.

*Delivered to my door meant I didn’t waste any time or energy lugging three kids around the mall or spend any money on a baby sitter.

*The convenience of the return was awesome. You just stick the clothes you don’t want into the paid envelope they provide and mail it via a regular mailbox.

*I like the way that you can earn credit by referring friends and the way that your $20 styling fee is applied to whatever you choose to keep. (Disclaimer: if you place an order through my link I will get credit towards my next fix, if I chose to order again.)

*I liked the style cards that came with each piece, suggesting a few ways to wear it.  This is the one from the sweater I kept:

stitch fix style card

CONs-

*They don’t seem to be great at dressing “plus sized” women. In real life I fluctuate between a size 8 and a size 12. None of those sizes are actually plus sized, but unfortunately in the fashion industry they are considered humongous.  I asked for size 10 clothes for this fix. Everything fit me, but you will notice they only sent shirts and 4 out of 5 (including the sweater) were pretty matronly. This might be my fault because I chose “mostly loose” on my style profile when they asked how I prefer my tops to fit. I also asked that they avoid sending pants because I don’t need any. That does not explain why I didn’t receive any dresses, jewelry, or other accessories in this fix.

*I was nursing a baby at the time (thus why I chose “mostly loose”) and the sweater that I kept was the only option that was convenient for that. Again, this isn’t really their fault, but might be something the company could consider in the future.

*The quality of the clothes, in my opinion, was definitely not worth the price they were charging. I understand that they have overhead costs, but so do the stores at the mall and I really felt like the quality of the clothes I got was comparable to a store like Forever 21 or H&M. I would have paid less than half of what Stitch Fix was charging by going to those stores.

*I have other friends whose fixes have included a tank to wear under a sheer top. I thought it was a little unfair to send me 3 sheer pieces and nothing to wear under them.

*They don’t seem to really understand their audience. Stitch fix seems to be catering to young professionals. However, most of the young professionals I know are too savvy to pay these prices for this quality. Those are the women who can find time to shop and buy nice clothes and have them tailored. They don’t want cheap fabric.  The idea behind Stitch Fix is genius and I love it, but they would be smarter to cater to moms and bloggers who have the influence to expand their reach and are willing to pay for convenience. (Says the woman who happily pays for the groceries to be delivered or for baby sitting services in the mall.)  As it is, I got the impression that my lifestyle and my body type just weren’t hip enough to fit into their ideal client base. That just seems dumb to me. Moms buy clothes too, and not just for ourselves, for our entire families. I feel like they are missing a big opportunity by not catering to moms and don’t really care because they want to seem cool.

After the fix I filled out the report they requested explaining what I thought of each piece. I feel like that might help personalize my order the next time around, if I chose to try again. So far I have not placed an order for another fix, but I might consider it in the future. Overall, I’d give my experience with them a B-.

Have you tried Stitch Fix? What was your experience with them like?

How To Make Cute Flashcards (or Blog Graphics) in PicMonkey

April 30, 2013 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Nicholas is in kindergarten and learning sight words.

His teacher sends home an updated list every few weeks of the words he is supposed to know.

One of the easiest ways to memorize them is with flashcards.

I like to use PicMonkey software because it’s free, quick, and easy. Shhhh…this is the same method I use to make the graphics for all of my blog posts. Like this one:

Make your own flashcards with PicMonkey

STEP 1: Upload a picture to PicMonkey. It can be any picture, it doesn’t matter what it looks like because you are going to cover it up.

Step 2:Go to the Overlays section on the left hand side and choose “Geometric Overlay.” Click on the rectangle option and adjust the size until it covers your entire picture. Change the color of the overlay to white.

Make flashcards with PicMonkey

Step 3: Merge the layers. Look at the top of the screen in PicMonkey. See the button second from the right that looks like two squares on top of each other with an arrow next to them? Click it.

PicMonkey

Step 4: Decorate. Now is the fun part. You can play around with the other overlays to add graphics or put a frame around your image.

Make simple sightword flashcards with PicMonkey

I like that they have some pretty cool boy-friendly graphics. We can make sentences for him to read or just put one word on each card.

STEP 5: Save your image. If you are creating several flashcards save them all as separate images.

STEP 6: Put all of your flashcards into a Word (or whatever processor you use) document.  You can insert them into a Word document by clicking Insert and choosing the picture option. Print them from there.

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now.
