The Shame Train

November 6, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

We told you about Mom Shaming.

Now It’s time for Bully Shaming. Toulouse and Tonic is calling out the bullies with a new trend called Bully Shaming, although it’s more about empowering the victim than stooping to the bully’s level.

You can go to the Bully Shaming Facebook page to add your own photo. Here’s mine.

Yes, there was a bully in our first grade class who actually did choke me while we were standing in line and, on a different occasion, stab me with a pencil. Little brat. He didn’t just pick on me, he was mean to everyone. My mom had a conference with the teacher about it, but nothing really changed. The next year my mom went back to work at a private school and took me with her so I didn’t have to deal with him any more, or any bullies really. You might not be super popular when your mom works at your school, but you don’t really get picked on either.

ElfShaming.om

On a lighter note, there is another shaming trend going around, this time holiday-themed. Have you visited the Elf Shaming website yet?  You can send in a picture of your Elf on the Shelf doing naughty things. My elf is being featured today. He ate my husband’s ice cream, which is pretty tame compared to some of the very naughty things other elves are doing over there.

Got Jammies?

November 5, 2012 By: Stephanie6 Comments

One of the best things about my husband is that he is a man of his word. One of the second best things is that he can readily admit when he is wrong.

Both of these tremendous qualities recently led to my acquisition of my newest most prized possession. Remember how I told you I wanted these?

source

The conversation went like this. We were talking about the kids’ Halloween costumes, Mary Poppins and Bert the chimney sweep:

“Dick Van Dyke was awesome in that movie, even if he did have an awful accent.”

“He was great in everything. Did you know he was the Scarecrow in The Wizard of OZ?”

“No. He wasn’t.”

“Yes, he was. I swear. Wanna bet?”

“I actually do want to bet because I’m 10,000% sure that there is no way that Dick Van Dyke was in the Wizard of Oz. That movie was filmed in the 30’s. He was probably a toddler.”

“He was too. He was the Scarecrow.  Look it up right now. What are you willing to bet?”

“I’m right about this, so it doesn’t even matter, but fine. If you win [use your imagination to insert rated R option here] What if I win?”

“You’re not going to win, but if you are right then I’ll drive to Target right now (9:15pm) and buy you those stupid footie pajamas.”

And he did.

P.S. An actor named Ray Bolger played the Scarecrow.

Thursday Thoughts

November 1, 2012 By: Stephanie4 Comments

I hope you all had a very happy Halloween. Ours was BUSY! We also had a house showing scheduled for 5:45 pm. (Who goes house hunting on Halloween night?) so we were a little rushed getting ready for trick or treating and went out a little later than we normally would. It made for a very grouchy penguin, but Mary Poppins and Bert the chimney sweep still had fun.

Have you heard that Anna from My Life and Kids released a new FREE eBook today? If you subscribe to her newsletter, she will send you a free copy of her latest book filled with adorable, realistic holiday traditions. Yours truly just happens to be featured in the Thanksgiving section for this super simple idea.

And don’t forget, today is the last day to enter the Bammco books giveaway. Three winners will be selected tomorrow. 🙂

The Time My Mom Got Stuck in the Mammogram Machine

October 30, 2012 By: Stephanie12 Comments

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is almost over and I wanted to share a funny story with you. (Don’t worry, I got permission.) While there is nothing funny about breast cancer, the awkwardness of a mammogram is occasionally good for a laugh. Like the time my mom got stuck during her mammogram.

This is my mom. She is known around our house as Pumpkin (which she hates, but that’s the name my kids gave her and it stuck.)

And this is the story of the time Pumpkin got STUCK in the mammogram machine.

It was just your average, every day routine maintenance mammogram. Until it wasn’t.

Yes, the machine broke in the middle of my mom’s mammogram.

I imagine it looked like this:

She was topless and squished inside the machine and the female tech couldn’t get the machine to open enough to get her out.

So they had to call in a mechanic to fix the machine. While my mom was still in it. The dude had a really hard time fixing the machine, but eventually she was free and she lived to tell the story.

Let this be a lesson to mammographers everywhere, please check your equipment before you go checking ours.

And ladies, go get your mammograms. It can’t be any more awkward than my mom’s.

Nicole’s Fall Family Photos

October 27, 2012 By: Stephanie6 Comments

You might remember that my friend Nicole’s daughter turned 1 last month and we were invited to her Mommy & Me tea party. As a gift I offered to take family photos. Nicole’s family is preparing to leave on a mission trip early next year and is trying not to accumulate much more “stuff.”

We decided to go to a park near their house while the leaves were changing. There is nothing more beautiful than fall in Pennsylvania.

I’m really happy with how the pictures turned out. 🙂 I hope Nicole is too.

I love doing Fall Family Photos. The leaves make such a great backdrop!

GIVEAWAY: Bammco Books

October 26, 2012 By: Stephanie25 Comments

I’m so excited to be able to share an awesome new product with you that I love for so many, many reasons!!!

First, you all know how I feel about children’s books. Obsessed is an understatement.

Second, I love supporting small family-owned businesses and Bammco, LLC is owned by Tom & Sue, a husband and wife team.

Third, well, just look…

It’s like a personalized Where’s Waldo? with your child’s face on every single page. See Abby?

Abby was so excited to see her face in an actual book. I was really happy to see that it was a great quality, hard-backed book that will last. Nick and Abby both had fun searching for Abby’s little face and the difficulty level was just right. It took them a while to find her, but it wasn’t too hard so they did not get frustrated with the process.

I’m using our Find Me If You Can book to keep Abby busy while I do Nick’s school work with him.

Guess what?

Tom and Sue have agreed to give away THREE Find Me If You Can books to lucky Binkies and Briefcases readers. These make great holiday gifts!

Enter using the Rafflecopter form below and on Friday, Nov. 2  I will randomly chose THREE winners who will each receive a code for ONE free book. Winners will be contacted by email, so make sure to leave your email in your comments. Good luck!

PLUS Tom and Sue have generously offered a 10% off code for all Binkies and Briefcases readers. Just enter BINKIES  into the coupon field at checkout. The code is good for one week.

Online BlogCon Wrap Up: What I Learned

October 25, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

I just attended my first blog conference!

Guess what? It was 100% online AND really affordable. Those were the biggest two draws for me in making the decision to sign up. I’ve wanted to go to a blog conference for YEARS, but they are usually really expensive and I couldn’t leave my nursing baby this year anyway.  I *might* have sulked and pouted for a few days about not being able to go to Haven and meet Ana White in person. Just saying.

It seems like you can’t get ahead in Blogland without attending a few conferences and making face-to-face connections. I was really thrilled to learn that there was going to be an alternative this year and it only cost $15. Online BlogCon was set up as a private blog and we were emailed a password to access the posts. It ran from Monday-Wednesday. A few posts would appear each day and Facebook and Twitter conversations would happen throughout the day as well. I missed a lot of the live stuff because of my home schooling  responsibilities, house showings, and other activities that were pre-planned, but I still feel like I got a lot out of the experience.

The majority of the participants were food bloggers, who I would not have pegged as “my people,” but everyone was very nice and I liked that my blog was able to stand out a little for being different. I’m really happy with what I learned and I would definitely do it again. If you get a chance next year, I recommend participating. Here are just a few of the things I learned:

  • Where to network. I already knew networking was important, but I was excited to learn about places like VoiceBoks where bloggers can go to interact with each other and participate group giveaways and link ups.
  • Private Facebook groups are where it’s at. I was already participating in 2 smaller groups, but the private FB group for Online BlogCon has over 200 Bloggers who are all supporting and promoting each other. I saw a big spike in my FB likes. (P.S. Use your personal Facebook profile, not your site’s when you are liking other pages. Only likes from personal pages count towards their number.)
  • People are watching us. Christi from Love from the Oven did a great post about working with brands. She shared a story about Kraft contacting her because they had tested a recipe from her blog and liked it so much they wanted to put it on their product packaging. I have noticed that after a project is in Blogland for a while, something very similar tends to appear in catalogs and retail stores. We are the trend setters and brands are starting to pay attention.
  • We can make money doing this. There were open and honest posts exploring different ad campaigns and rates, how many views a site has to have to qualify for certain companies, and advice for how to charge for your time and effort.
  • Balance. Stephanie from Somewhat Simple did a post about how to keep yourself sane and not lose your love for blogging. She suggested finding contributors to take some weight off your shoulders and setting goals, among other things.

My take aways to work towards growth for my own blog are:

  1. Set a schedule. I need to try to be more organized about what I’m posting and when.
  2. Do more networking. I’m trying to engage more in FB groups and on VoiceBoks and help other bloggers promote themselves. eventually it comes back around. I also started a Facebook group for local bloggers in my area, I’m hoping we can get some actual face time with each other.
  3. Define my voice a little better and be honest with myself about it. This blog started out as a personal family blog, but has grown and I need to decide what exactly my niche is. Much to my surprise, my niche seems to be “conservative mom humor lifestyle blog.” I would have never guessed that a few months ago when I was trying to be a craft or decor blog. The truth is, between homeschooling and building the new house, I just don’t have time to do as much crafting as I would like to, and there are other bloggers who are better at that. My biggest asset is being able to tell a funny story in a way that no one else can. I will still continue to share craft projects and our house building process, but I will try to define my voice while I’m doing it.

If you think you might be interested in attending next year you can visit the Online BlogCon Facebook page to stay in touch.

And I’d love to connect with you on the Binkies and Briefcases FB page as well!

My Dream Day: What Moms Really Want

October 23, 2012 By: Stephanie7 Comments

Lately, I’ve been feeling burnt out from the stress of selling our house, starting our first (and still probably only) year of homeschooling, starting a new part-time job (Shhh…too early to talk about it), and so on.

I was whining about it so much that last night my husband asked, pretty irritated, what exactly it was I wanted.  I really don’t want anything that special or out of the ordinary. I told him my dream day would look like this and I bet other moms have similar fantasies:

A Mom's Dream Day

10:30 am- Wake up and wonder what is going on. How could I possibly have slept that long?

10:35- Wander out of the bedroom and discover that the house is clean and there is a note on the table. It would be a nice touch if the note was sitting next to flowers.

10:36- Read the note. It says that my husband has taken the kids somewhere fun and far away so they will be gone all day. Sesame Place? The Crayola Factory? What do I care? I have the house all to myself all day.

10:37- Take my Kindle and lie on the couch. Alternate between reading and watching daytime tv. (oh, yeah, P.S. It’s a weekday, so hubby had to take off work. That just makes it more special. Don’t roll your eyes at me. He takes off for golf tournaments and deep-sea fishing trips, I can get one day.)

12:00- Order pizza. I’m not cooking and I’m not getting out of my pajamas. Promptly fall asleep on the couch.

12:36- Wake up to the doorbell. The pizza’s here. It’s a Supreme because nobody else in my family likes that, but they aren’t here, so there.

12:45- Receive an email with pictures of my kids’ smiling faces. They are having lots of fun, so I don’t have to worry about them.

1:30- Decide to go outlet shopping. Hubby has been very thoughtfully planned that this day occurs on a payday. Maybe a payday immediately following a huge tax refund. The only downside is that now I have to get dressed.

2:15 – Arrive at outlets. They aren’t crowded because it’s a weekday. Spend as much time as my little heart desires in the Pottery Barn outlet. Spend no time whatsoever at the parking lot playground. Find the captain’s desk chair on wheels that I have been wanting for a few years for a crazy low price and buy it. Somehow manage to get it in the car. Browse other stores and buy some non-maternity clothes for me.

4:00- Get a call from a girlfriend and decide to meet for dinner at Panera Bread. Drive home, stopping at some quaint Amish stores or antique shops on the way.

5:00- Meet her at Panera Bread. It’s Baked Potato soup day. Hang out and chat for a while.

6:30- Come home to find that my family is back and the kids have already had their baths. Listen to their stories about their day, read books, and put the kids to bed early because they are exhausted from their big adventure.

7:00- Take a bubble bath. Come out to discover that on the way home Hubby picked up White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake from the Olive Garden and was saving it as a surprise. He also stopped at Target and bought me one of these. I shall wear it for the remainder of the evening. He won’t be able to keep his hands off me.

source

7:15-Eat cheesecake and watch a movie on the couch with my husband while wearing adult footie pajamas. I’ll even let him pick the movie. I’m nice like that. His choices are Reality Bites (which is my favorite movie of all time, but he hates it), Twilight, or Magic Mike.

10:00- Decide to go to bed. Step on the scale before turning in and discover that I’ve lost 5 pounds despite the pizza, Panera, and cheesecake. Tell hubby that there are a bunch of bags and furniture items that need to be unloaded from the back of the van. I want to write from my new chair in the morning.

What does your dream day look like?

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
