Get the Little Monster to Go: Potty Training Tips

January 22, 2013 By: Stephanie12 Comments

Child on potty play with toilet paper, isolated over white

I’m not saying I know everything.

I’m not even saying I know anything.

But I do have three little kids and I have been in one stage of potty training or another for the past 4 years.

4 YEARS people.

4 years is a long time to spend teaching little firefighters to aim their water hoses.

I’ve learned some stuff. So far, this is what I know:

  • People will tell you to do it in the summer. I call B.S. on this one. I do not enjoy having naked kids running around my house peeing on my furniture. Also, we occasionally have to go out in public, where being naked and peeing wherever you want is frowned upon. Do it in the winter when they can wear fleece sweat pants and have fleece sheets on the bed. Those are the most absorbent. Just trust me.
  • Do you have a girl? Keep a funnel and an empty water bottle in your car. I bought a yellow funnel at IKEA so that I wouldn’t confuse it with any of the regular kitchen funnels. If you have a boy you can skip the funnel and just carry an empty bottle.
  • You’re going to want to buy new towels. Remember the fancy extra fluffy towels you got as a wedding gift? Those are your new go-to pee pee mopper-uppers. Cheap towels aren’t cut out for the task.
  • Just wait. Yeah, sure Johnny’s mommy says that he is 100% trained at 18 months, even at night, but what she isn’t telling you is that she sets an alarm and wakes him up 4 times every night to sit on the potty. Unless you want to be constantly dealing with accidents in public or waking up to change wet sheets 3 or 4 times a night, just wait a few more months. One of my kids was 4 years old before being 100% ready, including being night trained. It will happen eventually. I have not sent a kid to kindergarten in diapers yet.
  • Don’t buy a new couch until all of your kids are potty trained. I learned this the hard way. We’re all starting to see the true genius behind Grandma’s plastic wrapped furniture now, aren’t we?
  • Get the cheap seat that fits on top of the regular toilet. “But the little Lightening McQueen that sings when it senses it is being filled is adorable and I can keep it in any room in the house,” you say. It won’t be at all cute after the first time you have to clean poop out of it with your bare hands or when your little angel wants to “help” clean out the potty by dumping its contents on your carpet. Or if someone didn’t tell you they went and left the contents in the potty to later be discovered and used by a younger sibling as finger paint and/or food. Just sayin.’ Yes, it happens.

Ok veteran mommies, what else have you learned?

Mom Is Sick…So Now We Live in a Frat House?

January 16, 2013 By: Stephanie7 Comments

Yesterday I was sick. Although my husband is amazing and let me sleep in, (when you are a mom of three 8:00 is sleeping in) I still had to deal with the kids to the best of my ability for the rest of the day.

Looking around at all the junk food and unwashed masses, I couldn’t help but think that this felt vaguely familiar.  Then it hit me…

When the mom in a family is sick, it is pretty much exactly the same as living in a college frat house.

Hear me out.

frathouse

1. The food- Forget well-balanced meals or vegetables of any kind, for that matter.  Tuesdays are $1.99 Happy Meal days at our McDonald’s and we took full advantage on the way home from school pick-up.

2. My husband may have showered yesterday, but I know for a fact that the kids and I were greasy little monkeys.

3. Much like a frat house, the sheets are gross.

4. I backed out of all my appointments like a college kid skipping class.

5. When you are a college boy who passes out this is what happens: (Sorry Chris. That’s my husband in the middle proud of his handy work on one of his roommates.)

chris

When you are a mom, if you fall asleep for 2 minutes this is what happens (if you are lucky. It could be a lot worse.)

crayon

See? It’s basically the same thing.

Except you are expected to do it sober.

100% Natural Homemade Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice cream

January 14, 2013 By: Stephanie9 Comments

chocolate peanut butter icecream

The story of how this amazing chocolate peanut butter ice cream came to be…

You guys, a couple of weeks ago I started a whole foods diet and I'm doing okay. I lost a few pounds and I  feel pretty good, but I'm not a dieting kind of a gal.

I miss bread.

And chocolate.

And icecream. A lot.

Then I saw a demonstration for a blender on QVC that gave me an idea. Last night I invented this ice cream and it might have just saved my life. Or at least my thighs. So now I have an easy go-to recipe for homemade chocolate peanut butter ice cream and I can share it with you. Ready?

chocolateicecream

I was inspired by the recipe for this chocolate sauce from Deliciously Organic.

I made the sauce using her recipe.

Then I mixed 1 part chocolate sauce with 2 parts of organic whole milk and froze the mixture in an 8×8 pan overnight. (I used about 1.5 cups of chocolate sauce and 3 cups of milk, you can adjust the recipe if you want to make more or less.)

You could stop there and eat the chocolate sorbet by itself.

Or

You could do what I did and chop the sorbet into pieces and add it to a blender with 1 cup of all natural creamy peanut butter. Blend until smooth. At this point you could serve it as a milkshake or…

Place the mixture in an airtight container and freeze until it sets. In our freezer that was about 2-3 hours. (If you freeze it too long it will turn back into a sorbet. No worries, you can scrape it with a spoon to serve as shaved ice or you can just set it out to thaw for a little while.)

Ta-da.

icecream2

The chocolate peanut butter homemade ice cream recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 100% cacao powder (I used Hershey’s Special Dark)
  • pure maple syrup
  • vanilla extract
  • water (I don’t really count this as an ingredient)
  • organic milk
  • natural peanut butter

You’re welcome.

P.S. If you are not a whole foods fanatic, just use regular chocolate syrup, milk, and peanut butter. I would think the results should be the same.

What You Should Know Before Your C-section

January 9, 2013 By: Stephanie7 Comments

Ladies who have gone through c-sections share tips and tricks that helped them during their hospital stay and what what they wish they had known. The comments on this one are helpful too!

My youngest baby turned one a few weeks ago and I would like to take this opportunity to reflect upon her birth.

For some reason, not very many people share their planned c-section birth stories. There is no drama of the water breaking and the mad rush to the hospital. It is a little surreal to walk into the hospital and check-in for an appointment to have your baby.  I have had two planned c-sections, so I consider myself to be a veteran. Today I would like to offer some unsolicited advice for anyone who is preparing for a c-section. Remember, I am not a medical professional and my c-sections were already a few years ago, so talk to your doctor because some of these rules may have already changed or be different at the hospital where you are having your procedure.

In no particular order:

1. Get your hair done and your eyebrows waxed a few days ahead of time if you can. I know it sounds vain, but do this for you. You are going to be puffy and bloated and on drugs and people are going to be telling you how beautiful they think you look and wanting to take lots of pictures. You will probably not be able to shower for a few days. I did blow dry my hair, but I did not do my eyebrows before we went to the hospital and now this picture has been on Facebook for YEARS.  Try to concentrate on the gorgeous baby in my arms and not the caterpillars over my eyes. I dare you. 😉

eyebrows

2. You are not allowed to wear make-up, lotion, perfume, or deodorant on the day of your operation. I have no idea why you can’t wear deodorant, but you can’t.

3. This was the best advice I got from my friend Shelley: Go buy 4 or 5 old lady night gowns for your hospital bag. You know your great grandma’s flower printed “house coat?” Go get one. Get the ones with snaps or zippers down the front. They are perfect for breast feeding and you aren’t going to want to wear pants for a while. Even if you aren’t planning to have a c-section, stick some of these in your hospital bag, because you just never know. I found mine at Kohl’s.

4. They are going to give you very strange disposable one-size-fits-all mesh underwear. Take extra. Especially if you have staples. Getting real underwear snagged on your stomach staples is no fun.

5.  Speaking of staples, don’t worry at all about having these removed in a few weeks.  I was terrified of this because staple removal sounded like something out of a Frankenstein movie, but it doesn’t hurt any worse than plucking your eyebrows. (For more on eyebrows, see #1.) If you get stitches instead of staples you won’t need to worry about this.

6. Think about if you are comfortable with medical students in the room. I did not allow any medical students to observe my first c-section because I didn’t think I wanted any strangers in the room. I was already disappointed that my experience was going to be far from picture perfect. I wanted it to be as close as possible to the way I had always imagined my birth process: just me, my husband, and a doctor and nurse. By the time I was doing it again, I didn’t mind and I allowed medical students in the room. I had a different doctor for my second birth than I did for my first, but I found that when the students were there, the doctor took more time to explain and do things exactly “by the book” because he was being observed. I healed much faster, had much less swelling, and was therefore able to breastfeed, which I had not been able to after my first c-section. Plus, the fact that he was explaining every step of the process (to the students) actually put me at ease as well.

7. Intense shoulder pain can be a sign of gas. Don’t ask me how I know this.

8. Speaking of gas, you can’t eat anything until you pass it. And you will be starving because you can’t eat anything after midnight the day before your procedure either. You might have to go a full day or even two without food. But you might have a morphine drip, so that’s a plus.

9. Be prepared to embrace the maxi-pad. Not only will you be wearing GIGANTIC ones for days, maybe weeks, afterward. Also, you might not be able to handle tampons for a while because they aggravate your scar tissue. Don’t ask me how I know this either.

1o. You may not be able to have photos taken in the delivery room. Hospitals have different policies about this. You will need to ask ahead of time. If you were planning on having a photographer document the birth, you should know up front that in some hospitals, that might not be an option.

11. No matter how scary it seems, just like a vaginal birth, in the end it will be worth it. You will probably even be willing to do it again.

I did.

c-section

Ok ladies, what did I miss? What other advice do we have for our friends preparing for the big day?

Bed…rest?

January 5, 2013 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Late in my pregnancies I tend to start having contractions too early. With both of my girls my contractions started around 7 months, so the doctors wanted me to rest as much as possible. I kept going in and out of the hospital with labor symptoms and they would give me medicine to stop contractions and send me home.  They tried prescribing modified bed rest.

Obviously, that was SUPER easy when I was pregnant with my third child and also had a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old at home.

This is a picture of what bed “rest” looks like for an 8-months pregnant mom of two pre-schoolers:

My favorite part is the last minute or so when Abby starts singing, “My hiney is wet. My hiney is wet because I peed.”

Also, do you like the grandma-chic curtains in our bedroom? Note to self: DO NOT make any home decor choices while pregnant.

Building The Dream: Lucky ’13?

December 31, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

Did you miss me? Sorry, I know I have been MIA for quite a while. We are living with my in-laws temporarily until our new home is built and the computer is in the same room where the baby sleeps, which leaves less time for blogging.

I am seeing tons of people posting their goals for the New Year on social media and I thought it would be a good time to revisit the Building The Dream series since my #1 goal for 2013 is to GET OUR HOUSE BUILT!

We’re getting there, slowly but surely.

I had NO IDEA how involved the process of developing land from scratch would be. Running utilities, developing storm water plans,  and sub-diving our large lot for the possibility of future development has been complicated and time consuming, not to mention developing the plans for the actual house.  I am sooooo thankful that I married an professional engineer who can design and stamp our plans. Otherwise, we would already have spent an additional $15,000 + just on design fees. As it stands, we are only paying the required fees for each permit as they arise, but those costs are already in the thousands. It is taking forever, I tell you, but in the end it will be worth it.

Right now we (and by “we” I mean Eddie) are putting the final touches on our sub-division plan and addressing comments that the board made about our storm water plan. Once we have approvals on both of those things we can go to the bank for our final loan approval and then FINALLY get zoning & building permits. That could potentially take until mid-February, which will be over a year after we purchased the lot.

We are hoping to break ground in early spring and be in the house by late summer so that Nicholas can start first grade in the neighborhood school in September.

It is going to look a lot like this:

house1

  source

In other related news, we had to quit homeschooling through no fault of our own. Because we are temporarily staying with family in another state, the cyber school we were using for Nicholas forced us to withdrawal because they don’t offer services in MD. I can’t go the traditional homeschooling route because then we would have to pay for all of his special services out of pocket. We had to file for a special kind of living arrangement called Shared Domicile with the housing office (basically, we are legally homeless) and we will be registering him for a local school here next week. Fingers crossed  for the little guy. I think he will enjoy it though. He is my social butterfly.

Our only other big news right now is that yesterday Miss Penelope turned one! I can’t believe how fast that year went. We had a brunch with family & friends to celebrate.

penny

What about about you? What is our biggest goal for the new year?

All I Want for Christmas

December 13, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

is smaller boobs.

I’m THRILLED to be making my debut at In the Powder Room today!!
Read Me In the Powder Room!

All I Want for Christmas is a Breast Reduction

Three years ago we had this Christmas photo taken and when I shared it on Facebook my sister immediately commented, “I can’t see your picture because I’m too distracted by your giant boob. It’s right in the middle of the pic and it’s bigger than the baby’s head!”

I wasn’t even nursing at the time, so I don’t have that excuse. Three years, one more baby, and 9 extra months of breastfeeding later…they’re even worse.

So I decided to write a letter to Santa asking for help with my predicament….

Head on over to read the rest my plea for Santa to bring me a scalpel for Christmas.

and if you are visiting from In The Powder Room, welcome! Stick around to read some funny stories.

Or join me on Facebook.

Guest Post: Abbie from Cloth Bottom Baby

December 12, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

This is my final guest post. We are officially moved in with the in-laws and have been dealing with some serious outside drama concerning my son’s school situation. I will be back soon. In the mean time, I’m excited to introduce you to a fabulous local business owner, Abbie Beall from Cloth Bottom Baby. I asked Abbie to share some tips for easy ways moms can go green in the new year. (Full disclosure, although I tried, I failed miserably at cloth diapering, I only lasted 2 days, but if Abbie’s service had been around a few years ago maybe I would have stuck with it.)

Hi, my name is Abbie. I’m a mom, a wife, a cloth diaper addict, and I’m making my best attempt to live as “green” of a lifestyle as possible. Before becoming a mom I thought recycling was making an awesome effort toward being environmentally conscious and considerate. Geesh was I naive! Oh the things you learn and think about when you are concerned with the environment your baby will be subjected to, the longevity of natural resources and ultimately our planet, and what kind of footprint you’re leaving that will affect him or her.

Sometimes the realization of my impact on our earth and what that eventually means for my daughter’s future can be really overwhelming. So much so that at times I would love to go to the extreme and live in a remote location in house built with recycled materials, living simply, living off the land… ok and then I snap back to reality and remember just how much I love my amenities and modern conveniences that I just can’t do without! And then I just make my best effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

So from me to you, here a 5 simple steps for the modern day mom to preserve our Earth for our children and for future generations!

#1. Cloth Diaper

In my introduction I described myself as a cloth diaper addict and as owner of Cloth Bottom Baby Diaper Service, it seems only fitting to make my number one step cloth diapering. It really is a simple step and isn’t as scary as it sounds and the benefits are far greater than any extra effort that it might require. There are two options for cloth diapering. Diaper service, or home laundering. Diaper service makes cloth diapering no more inconvenient than disposables. And although home laundering is a bit laborious, the benefits are tremendous. I’ll let the facts speak for themselves:

  • No one knows how long it takes for a disposable diaper to decompose, but it is estimated to be about 250-500 years, long after your children, grandchildren and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone
  • Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste
  • Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp
  • The manufacture and use of disposable diapers amounts to 2.3 times more water wasted than cloth
  • Over 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum feedstocks and 20 pounds of chlorine are used to produce disposable diapers for one baby EACH YEAR

For more awesomely wonderful facts about diapers please visit the Real Diaper Association website http://www.realdiaperassociation.org/diaperfacts.php

#2 Switch cleaners and laundry detergents

Instead of using chemically overloaded cleaners, opt for cleaners that are non-polluting, biodegradable, non-toxic and made with natural ingredients. Biodegradable and non-toxic cleaners and detergents are easy to come by and unlike their chemical-laden counterparts, they do not contain chemical optical brighteners, fragrances, dyes or carcinogens that release toxins into the environment. I really, really love Charlie’s Soap laundry powder. I think it cleans better than my old detergent and it makes me feel good to know that I’m not leaching toxins into the environment each time I run my washer!

http://charliesoap.com/laundry_powder.html

Seventh Generation is another brand that we use frequently. Their products are great, and the company is awesome. Their mission is to inspire a revolution that nurtures the heath of the next seven generations.

#3 Ditch The Water Bottle … the single-use one any way

Instead of buying costly bottled water, opt for a reusable water container. I love Nalgene bottles and stainless steel bottles are a great choice too. Every night before bed, fill your reusable bottle, put it in the fridge, and the next day you’re ready to go with ice cold water! Single use bottles require energy to produce, store, and transport, and barely 20% of them end up being recycled. And most are made out of petroleum. Quick, easy, and safe fix … fill your own time and time again.

#4 Shop a Local Farmer

This is easier to do in spring and summer months for us Pennsylvanians and anyone else experiencing winter’s wrath. But whenever possible buy fruits, vegetables, and even meat from a local farmer. This will help support farmers in your area, so they won’t be forced to sell off their land for development, and it will decrease your food miles, meaning less fuel will be used to provide your daily meals. Your food will be delicious and better for you.

#5 Reusable Grocery Bags

This might be the simplest step of them all! Ditch the plastic and paper! Even if you recycle them, the resources used for their creation (and resources expended to recycle them) can be eliminated if you use reusable bags. Oh and a big bonus to this… those bags hold so much more, which means less bags= less trips to the car to carry the groceries in= more time. What mama can’t use more TIME?!

Happy reducing, reusing, and recycling! And a big thanks to Stephanie for letting me share on her space!

Guest Post: Holiday Food with Happy Food, Healthy Life

December 6, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

I’m happy to welcome Holly from Happy Food Healthy Life today to share her favorite tips about handling all of the extra temptations around the holidays. Take it away Holly…

Hi everyone, I’m Holly from Happy Food, Healthy Life, and I just want to thank Stephanie for having me here and letting me sprinkle a little bit of my personality into her personal space.

It’s December, and by the looks of it, the holiday season is in full-force. Even if there isn’t any snow on the ground in your neck of the woods, chances are, the seasonal signs are still there. Check-out lines are miles long. You can hear the Salvation Army bell-ringers outside every shopping center. Your kids are jumping off the walls as they count down the few more days until Christmas.

On top of that, I’m guessing you are probably surrounded by tons and tons of tempting holiday treats. If you work in an office, you may be getting sugary deliveries from clients and co-workers. Maybe your neighbors have already started gifting their homemade treats. Or maybe it’s you that likes to bake and there is an abundance of temptation in your own kitchen!

For someone who is trying to stay healthy (which is most of the world), it can be one of the most difficult times of the year. I would love to share with you just a few tips I have for getting through the holiday season without falling into the trap of holiday goodies.

Hold out for the Good Stuff
There’s going to be cookies galore every where you turn. You’ll have Warm Cinnamon Almonds pulling you in from the other side of the mall. Candy canes here, white peppermint Hershey Kisses there. There will be an abundance of options all around you, and you will probably be tempted to eat every single bite of it.

But let’s think about this for a minute. How much do you really like candy canes or sugar cookies? I am an advocate for not restricting any foods from your diet, but in saying that, you need to ask yourself if you really like the foods you’re eating or if you’re just eating them because they’re there and because it’s “allowed” during the holiday season?

Maybe you should ask yourself what Christmas foods and candies you look forward to every year. I personally love Almond Roca. When we get it in our office, I am one of the first to rip open the package. I am not going to waste my calories on something that I don’t even really care about just because it’s the holiday season. I will hold out for the treats that I truly look forward to every year and that really excite my taste buds.

Don’t be Tempted by the Pretty Colors
Ok, this is another big one, guys. So put two Oreos side by side. One is a classic Oreo with white cream, and the other is a holiday Oreo with red or green cream filling. (ooooh ahhh!) I can pretty much guarantee which one will go first. The “fancy” holiday version.

There is something about adding red or green food coloring to a regular old food that just gets people excited. And oh boy, if there are coordinating sprinkles, there’s no way you’ll be able to say no!

I just hope you can keep this in mind. Much of the time, this is a normal every-day food that is cleverly disguised as holiday fare. Remember that you can get this food every other day of the year and it will probably taste pretty similar, so you don’t have to hoard them during the month of December.

(Of course, there are some things that require hoarding, such as the white chocolate peppermint hershey kisses!)

Don’t Beat Yourself Up
Even while we’re trying to stay mindful of the treats around is, it is possible (and probable) that we will break our healthy habits here and there throughout the season. All I can tell is to not beat yourself up. A few weeks of indulging is not going to ruin your entire year if you have worked hard to stay healthy. Continue working out as much as you can. Don’t give up on yourself and think that you are doomed to live an unhealthy life because of this season of indulging.

Remember something: Almost everyone struggles with their diets during the holiday season. You are not alone. You will be able to get through this time, and luckily, the season doesn’t last very long. In no time at all, you will be back to your normal routine and all will be right in the world.
Enjoy this time with your family and friends. Enjoy some of the treats you look forward to and can’t get any other time of the year. And above all, try not to stress about the situation too much. The holidays are supposed to be fun.

Have a very happy holiday season, and if you enjoyed what you read, I invite you to come visit me at Happy Food, Healthy Life.

Guest Post: My Life and Kids Family-Friendly Christmas Trees

December 5, 2012 By: Stephanie5 Comments

I’m THRILLED to have Anna from My Life and Kids here today. She was the first bigger blogger to take me under her wing, so I consider Anna to be a mentor. It has been so much fun getting to know each other and see how much we have in common. This was one of my favorite ideas from her new eBook and she offered to do a guest post on it here while I’m off focusing on our big move! Here’s Anna…

When I was growing up, I always had a small Christmas tree in my bedroom. I can still remember lying in bed, seeing the twinkling lights and being so excited about the holidays.

My mom has continued the tradition and decorates a small tree for my kids’ rooms every year.

My daughter’s tree is pink (of course).

Pink Christmas Tree for Kids

And my son’s tree is bright green.

Christmas Tree for Kids' Rooms

My mom makes new ornaments every year. She prints pictures, laminates them and adds yarn for easy hanging.

This year my daughter’s tree is filled with her favorite princesses:

Ornaments Kids will Love

And my son’s tree is full of pictures of garbage trucks (his favorite) and pictures of himself (his other favorite.)

The kids LOVE their trees, and I love the memories they bring back from my own childhood.

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
