I Hope You Fail: Why Letting Our Children Experience Failure Is Fine

April 19, 2016 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Kids need to experience failure even though sometimes it is hard for us as parents

Failure Can Be So Important.

Dear Child,

I hope that you fail spectacularly.

I am your mother, and it might seem odd for me to say so.

But failure is important. I love you too much to let you think that your life will always be easy. I would not be doing my job if I did not help you prepare for consequences and frustration, and let you learn on your own how to meet disappointments with grace. [Read more…]

How to Dispose of Expired Medicine with Coffee Grounds

April 14, 2016 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Learn how coffee grounds can be used to properly dispose of expired medicine

I am happy to be part of the Know Your OTC blogger platform this month because I have to admit that today we’re going to be talking about something that I have been doing wrong for years, just because I didn’t know any better. How in the world are we supposed to get rid of medicine after it expires?

I thought I knew what NOT to do, but I wasn’t really sure what the right way to get rid of it was. Usually, that led to keeping a bunch of expired medicines around our house for years just because we weren’t sure what else to do with them, then finally giving up one day and disposing of them incorrectly.

Well, now someone has finally taught me the right way to get rid of expired medicine and I can show you too.

SafeDisposal-NielsenData-NeverSoughtInfo-TW-v3

I was surprised by how simple it is!

I had only been missing one step of the process, and I already had the special ingredient in my pantry.

KnowYourOTCs-SafeMedicineDisposal

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration just wants us to mix our medicines with an unpalatable substance such as coffee grounds or kitty litter, then seal the mixture in a container like a plastic bag, and throw them in the trash.

That does not sound hard. We can all totally do that!

Apparently 62% of adults have never sought information about how we are actually supposed to be disposing of our over-the-counter medication. Although, 50% of adults say they do throw their medicine away in the trash (I was in that 50 percent), only 8% know to mix it with an unpalatable substance like the coffee grounds or kitty litter first. Guilty.

I will be changing my ways, and I hope that if you were with me in that 50% you will start mixing your expired medicine with coffee grounds as well.

You can find even more information on safe disposal on the Know Your OTCs website.

This is why they say knowledge is power. Now the next time we find ourselves face-to-face with a medicine cabinet full of pills that have been past their prime since 1998, we will know exactly what to do.

How To Get Great Curls

April 7, 2016 By: Stephaniecomment

Curly hair

Let’s talk abut hair today! I have very curly hair, and for some reason whenever I wear my hair down people always seem surprised to learn that my curls are natural. But my “natural” state is more like Mufassa and less like, well, and thing I want to be seen looking like in public. If you see me on any given day, I probably have my hair pulled back into a pony tail or a clip. It can be hard work to get great curls!

If left to its own devices, my hair is not especially awesome. If I want it to look good, I can’t just step out of the shower and run a brush through it. I have always been super jealous of the ladies who can do that!

But I do have a trick to getting easy 5-minute curls that are not frizzy or crunchy. I picked up this trick when I was a teenager, I think I read it in a beauty magazine, and I am still using it. I have tried lots of very expensive products on my hair, but this is still the best way I have found to control my curls. And it’s the cheapest, which is great! [Read more…]

8 Great Disney Travel Tips

If you are planning a family trip to Disney any time soon, I have a few Disney travel tips to share with you. Our family used to live in Florida, and we took frequent trips to Disney World because it was only about 90 minutes away from our house and they have a great discount for Florida residents.

Here are a few of my favorite tips that I use when we plan out own trips to Disney World. [Read more…]

Five Things I Wish We Had Done While Building A House

March 31, 2016 By: Stephanie6 Comments

We built a custom home and these are the top five things I wish we would have done differently.

Welcome! I’m guessing you are here because you are thinking about building a new home for your family. Well, we’ve been there and done that, so I have lots of tips to share.

One of my most popular posts from last year was Ten Things I’m Glad We Did While Building A New Home. It has been pinned over fifty thousand times already! Thank you for that! There seem to be quite a few people who are interested in building their own homes, which we totally understand. We are thankful every day that we were able to pick our land and custom build our home. Because we truly did put a lot of time into planning, there really isn’t very much I would do differently. But now that we have been living in our space for a few years, there are some very small things that we wonder if maybe we could have done differently. So, I thought today it might be helpful to look at the other side of the coin and share a few things that I might have chosen to do differently while we were building a a new home.

5 Can Chicken Tortilla Soup

March 23, 2016 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Quick and easy chicken tortilla soup recipe. Get dinner on the table in 20 minutes tonight.

I originally got this recipe from my friend Karin at a mom’s group that we were a part of a few years ago. As a member of the steering committee, it was my job to bring a large pot of soup to the brunch at the end of the year, and she shared this chicken tortilla soup recipe with me then because it is very easy and it can feed a crowd.  [Read more…]

How to Replace Buttons with Snaps

February 28, 2016 By: Stephanie7 Comments

Learn how to replace buttons with snaps. This is great for people who have trouble with the dexterity in their fingers and can't button.

Please note that posts on this blog contain affiliate links for your convenience.

When I was in college I lived with my aging grandmother and I remember her buying her clothing based on how easy it was for her to use. She would not buy coats that had zippers. She preferred her jackets to have snaps instead and would purchase elastic waist bands over anything with buttons. In her eighties it was just too hard for her to make her hands do what she wanted them to do, but she wanted to still be able to dress herself.

Now my son has the same problem. He struggles with the dexterity in his fingers, but wants to be able to be independent. Most of the clothes they sell in his size at stores have button flies and he can’t just wear sweat pants every day. Sometimes he has activities or commitments that require him to dress up. As his mom, I worry about things like complicated belts or clothing causing embarrassing problems for him at school. So it has become my job to try to eliminate as many of those issues as possible. He can practice buttons in other places, but they should not stand between him and the bathroom.

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
