What Can You Do About Racism?

August 25, 2017 By: Stephaniecomment

Race relations is not a topic I shy away from talking about here on the blog. You can see some of my other posts about it here, here, and here. During my time as an elementary school teacher, I’ve served in a few communities where I was in the minority. What those experiences taught me was how strongly my students often identified with their cultural heritages and also how extremely important it is for everyone to try to understand and empathize with various perspectives.

For the past week or so, after having their eyes opened by the events that took place in Charlottesville, I’ve heard several people in my own community expressing feelings of helplessness. It can be easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you are only one person, so what can you really do?  [Read more…]

So You Just Found Out Your Child Has Special Needs…Now What?

February 7, 2017 By: Stephanie6 Comments

Maybe for a while you knew something was just a little bit “off,” but you weren’t sure exactly what that was. Parenting children with special needs can be a long, hard road and at the start it seems like you are fighting with everything you have just to figure out what is going on. Why can’t anybody give you any answers? But eventually they come. And once you finally receive a diagnosis for your child, then what?

Some parents are still taken completely by surprise. Maybe you didn’t see it coming. Or maybe you thought it was something else. Maybe you had prepared yourself to hear ADHD, but a doctor actually said Autism. Maybe you thought you were ready to hear it, but you weren’t. Now what?

Breathe.

Then keep a few things in mind.  [Read more…]

Join Our New Book Club

January 2, 2017 By: Stephaniecomment

Follow along with our new virtual book club. It's free and you don't have to get out of your pj's. What's not to love

If you have been following my Facebook page, you may have been participating in some of the discussions recently about how I wanted to start a new book club.

A few years ago I used to host a monthly book club at my home for my friends. Everyone would bring their kids and a covered dish and we would have brunch and let the kids have a play date while we talked about the book. My health is no longer up for hosting a real life event like that on a regular basis, but I do miss that book club. I thought it would be fun if we could have a virtual one here on the blog.

So we will! Here is what we are going to do:  [Read more…]

Authenticity

December 31, 2016 By: Stephaniecomment

It was a simple question but it stopped me in my tracks because I didn’t know the answer and I couldn’t remember when I stopped knowing it.

It was 2010. We were getting better aquatinted with some new friends on a rare night away from the kids.

What kind of music do you like?

I used to know that, right? My husband rattled his answer off easily. He’s a musician. I smiled and nodded and hoped his words would suffice for both of us. Unfortunately for me, these new friends of ours actually seemed to care. They pressed for my opinion, but I truly did not have one to give them. [Read more…]

Ten Great Christmas Books for Kids

This list of Christmas books for kids includes holiday classics and some new modern books as well.

If you are still looking for a stocking stuffer or an affordable gift that will last for years, a book is a great idea. Some families also like to participate in the tradition of sticking to 4 Christmas gifts per child: something you want, something you need, something to wear, and something to read. All of these Christmas books for kids fit perfectly in that last category!

Write a meaningful note and sign the inside cover and you might just create a family heirloom. I’ve included a mixture of secular and religious titles. These are books I remember from my own childhood, books that I had in my classroom, and books that my own kids love now.

Great Christmas Books for Kids

The Biggest Most Beautiful Christmas Tree was my favorite holiday story as a little girl. I remember my grandmother pulling it from the small stack of books she kept in her hall closet to read to us. It is a Little Golden Book from the 80’s an can be hard to find, but Amazon still has some copies available.  [Read more…]

Grandy’s Turkey Soup Recipe

December 6, 2016 By: Stephaniecomment

Homemade turkey soup recipe. Warms the soul and great for using left-overs!

This year after Thanksgiving both my mom and my sister came to me and asked if I had my grandmother’s turkey soup recipe. No one ever wrote it down. Now that she is gone, we only have what exists in my memory. Before I got married I asked my mother’s mother to stay with me for a week to teach me her recipes. This wasn’t one I learned that week. It was only one we talked about years later, when she would drop it off at my door after she made a large batch. Once she gave me too much and I took half to a friend whose children had the flu.  [Read more…]

12 Affordable gift ideas for teens

A few days ago I asked my Facebook page to help me out with some gift ideas for teens. Some of you responded by posting actual photos of your teenager’s wish lists. Others offered some great creative ideas, and tried and true classics. Here are a few things the teen in your life might enjoy receiving on any special holiday. I know that many teens have large items like phones, computers, or even cars on their lists, but for our purposes I tried to stay as budget-friendly as possible and I kept every gift here under the $75 price point.  [Read more…]

Easy American Girl Doll Necklaces

Easy necklaces for American Girl dolls

Next week the girls and I will be heading to our first craft show so that they can show off some of the accessories they have been designing for their dolls. We already showed you how to make tutus from old t-shirts. Today we are doing some more upcycling and turning old  beaded eyeglass chains   into American Girl doll necklaces.

I have a box of my grandmother’s costume jewelry sitting in the closet and it had lots of beaded eyeglass chains in it. These are not something I use myself, but the tiny beads do make them the perfect size for making doll-sized necklaces. We used what we had on hand and materials that would make this accessory easy for Penny, who is five, to put the necklace on the dolls herself once it was finished.

To make American Girl doll (or any other 18″ doll) necklaces you need: [Read more…]

How To Make a No Sew American Girl Doll Skirt

November 2, 2016 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Make your own American Girl ballet skirt. It's easy and fast!

This week we made a new sew American Girl doll skirt, and we’d love to show you how to make one too. It was easy enough for my seven-year-old to make several by herself.

Abby is getting VERY into American Girl dolls lately. She loves getting the catalog in the mail and circling things for her wish list. She is also my arts and crafts lover. We have signed up to do a craft fair together next month. I showed her the technique for this simple no sew ballet skirt and she is able to make the entire thing by herself. Pretty impressive for second grade!  [Read more…]

On Facts and Opinions

Once upon a time a little girl turned on the t.v. The Channel 4 news station said it was raining. People might as well stay inside and eat ice cream. They thought the best kind of ice cream to eat on a rainy summer day was strawberry. [Read more…]

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
