Once upon a time a little girl turned on the t.v. The Channel 4 news station said it was raining. People might as well stay inside and eat ice cream. They thought the best kind of ice cream to eat on a rainy summer day was strawberry.
“What are you watching?!” asked her mother with contempt. “Turn off that filth. That channel is all lies. It probably isn’t even raining. We can’t trust anything they say. Everyone knows that the best ice cream is chocolate! I can tell you a million reasons why I think so. Anyway, they are owned by a company that manufactures strawberry ice cream. Turn on Channel 5 instead. They are much more fair. They will tell me that I am right.”
The little girl changed the channel as her mother stepped out of the living room. As her mother said they would, the anchor did note that the best kind of ice cream to eat on such a rainy day as that day was probably chocolate.
Her father came into the room. “Not this ridiculous channel!” he cried. “Channel 5 is very pro-chocolate. You can’t trust them. Nothing they say is true. You know it can’t be raining if they said it. Everyone knows that strawberry is the best kind of ice cream. I proved it to be so the other day at the restaurant. I took a survey by asking all my friends who ordered strawberry ice cream what kind was the best, and all of the people I polled agreed with me.”
The little girl sighed and looked out the window.
It was raining.
She was able to decide for herself how she felt about ice cream.
