Graco Snugride Event

October 20, 2012 By: Stephanie6 Comments

This post is sponsored by Graco. I was compensated for attending this event, but all opinions are my own.

This afternoon I attended the Graco Snugride Click Connect event at our local Babies R Us. I got a chance to meet local bloggers and see the brand new .

I got a chance to meet Wendy from ABCs and Garden Peas. Wendy was the hostess for the event and I was there as her assistant. Here in Central PA it is rare to get a chance to connect with other bloggers so I was thrilled to meet Wendy and Skye from Real Mom Reviews.   Skye is only 23 and is raising 6 kids!  I was so impressed with both of these ladies.

Our attendance was lower than we expected, but it made for a nice intimate group. We had a little less than 20 people come to our event.

We ate the cookies and candy Wendy brought, played celebrity baby name trivia, and spent a lot of time playing with the Snugride car seat.

I have to say, I honestly was very impressed with this car seat. Now that the recommendations have changed and children are supposed to be rear facing until age 2, we are going to need a new car seat for Penny. I am strongly considering the Snugride.

All of the moms loved the 8 different reclining settings, allowing for plenty of leg room as your baby grows. Abby was a big baby and her legs were always bent and squished against the back of the seat once she got to be about 8 months old until the time she could face forward. This would not have been a problem with the Snugride because of the adjustable settings. The seat slides back and up, so that as baby grows she can sit upright, allowing for more legroom. This car seat is approved for 4 pounds all the way up to 40 pounds, so it is good to go up to age 2 (or maybe longer) without a problem.

We also really liked the retractable foot rest. The seats of your car will stay clean because your toddler’s muddy shoes won’t be kicking them while you are driving. Plus it’s really cute with the little footprints. 🙂

I think my favorite feature was the way the straps adjust. No re-threading! They adjust with just a button in the back of the car seat, so there is no need to re-thread. That is a huge pain for me this time of year with our current car seat, which is an older Graco model. Because of the weather fluctuations, Penny is wearing a heavier sweater one day and a lighter outfit the next and I am constantly having to readjust the straps. The Snugride is soooo much easier.

Also, because it is a Click Connect, this car seat would work with the two Graco strollers (a single and a double) that we already own.

We even got to give away two brand new Snugrides to some lucky ladies.

And the winners are….drum roll…

Emily of Momma Days and Naomi!

Congratulations ladies!

The – the first and only newborn to two-year infant car seat that actually grows with your baby from four pounds all the way up to 40 pounds. The car seat is designed for a parent on the go. The infant car seat can be easily removed from the base and used as a carrier when the infant is small, providing portability and convenience so you can easily move your infant in and out of the car without disturbing them.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently made the recommendation to keep all children in rear-facing car seats until the age of 2. Graco set out to make this product so parents can keep infants rear facing longer while still keeping them comfortable.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Graco. The opinions and text are all mine.

Building the Dream: Electricity

October 19, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

Baby Steps. We are in a holding pattern right now in the house building process. We need to sell the house we live in now before construction can begin.

We have a good bit of savings and inheritance that we are using in the mean time to do the not-all-that-exciting stuff like pay permit fees, and erect poles.

Recently, we had to remove a few trees so that the electric pole could be installed. Our lines will be run underground to connect to the house, but another pole needed to be added at the end of the street so that the lines could reach our property. We paid to have two large trees removed and Eddie and a friend cut down a third. The electric company wound up needing to remove another to install the pole.

We’ve planted quite a few more trees so don’t fret too much about the ones that were removed.

I love the view that will become the back yard. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but that corn is probably a good 7 or 8 feet tall. The small trees are fruit (peach, apple and pear) and will eventually grow into a small backyard orchard.  I’m looking forward to planting a large vegetable garden. Hopefully in the spring.

Now somebody please buy our current house!

Blog Tip: Adding a Blog Button With Code Underneath

October 18, 2012 By: Stephanie10 Comments

Binkies and Briefcases

Whew. I finally figured out how to add a blog button with code to my sidebar. (That “with code” part was killing me) Do you see it over there? I’m so proud of myself. 🙂 If you are wondering what in the world I’m talking about, a blog button is a picture like this. When people click on it, it takes them right to your website. You can add it to your blog with the code underneath for people to copy and paste, like this:

Screenshot 2014-03-30 15.12.44

It was actually really easy once I found the right tools.

Step 1: Create an image.

I like to do this in Picmonkey because it’s easy. Click “Edit a photo” and upload any image. It doesn’t matter which one because you are going to cover it up. On the left sidebar you will see a gray picture of some shapes, those are the overlays. Put a Geometric overlay over your photo in whatever color you want to be the background. Add your text and any other graphics you like with the other tools in PicMonkey.

Once it looks the way you want it to, click save and change the dimensions to make it button size. Mine is 145 & 160-ish. A lot of people recommend 125 x 125.

Step 2: Create a Draft Blog Post

You need somewhere to host your image. All you have to do is create a draft blog post and upload your image there for safe keeping. Don’t publish it. Name it something easy to find in the future like “BUTTONS, Do Not Delete.”

Step 3: Use This App

I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it myself, but why bother when there’s a free app for that?

The Grab My Button Code Generator from My Cool Realm.com worked well for me on the first try.

Type the name of your site and your blog address in the appropriate spaces.

To find your image url, go into the draft blog post you made with the image in it. Click on html. Somewhere inside the code you should see a line that starts with http and ends with .jpg, like this:

http://binkiesandbriefcases.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/button2.jpg

Copy and paste just that part of your code into the line that says image URL.

Generate the code, then copy it.

Step 4: Add the code to your sidebar

In Blogger you would do this by going to Layout, Add a Gadget, HTML/JavaScript, then pasting the code in the box.

In WordPress I went to Appearance, Widgets, Text (arbitrary text or html) and pasted my code in the box.

You are probably smarter than I am and have already figured this out for yourself, but just in case, I hope it helped. 🙂

No And Then!

October 17, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Do you remember the scene in Dude Where’s My Car (What? I’m the only person who has seen that movie?) when they are trying to order fast food and the lady working the drive-thru keeps saying “and then?” to get Ashton Kutcher to order more food?

That is how my day from h-e-double hockey sticks felt.

One thing would happen, and then another, and then another, and I just wanted to scream “NO AND THEN!”

source

First thing this morning I’m nursing Penny in our bed. Immediately after nursing she starts gagging and throws up ALL OVER ME.  Not just baby spit up, actual “uh-oh, the baby might have the flu” vomit. Twice.

Also, our dishwasher was broken. Thankfully Eddie was able to fix it last night, but there is a sink & counter (& okay, stove too) full of 4+ day old dirty dishes to be washed, plus the rest of the house to be cleaned and homeschooling to be done before the showing of our house that is scheduled for the afternoon. I have to cancel Bible Study, preschool, a dentist appointment, and the kids church club tonight.

My older two kids are also sick, but only with bad chest colds. They aren’t throwing up (yet).

Eddie agrees to come home a little early so that he can be there to help with the kids and the dog while we have to be out of the house in the afternoon. Yay!

Also, the baby has a fever. I don’t know how bad the fever is because all of our thermometer batteries are worn out. Yes, all of them. Never in my life has a thermometer battery worn out on me, but today they all decided to quit at the same time. It’s like there was a solar flare or something.  All I know is that she felt really warn & then I gave her Tylenol and now she feels less warm.

Fast forward a few hours. I miraculously have been able to get the house straightened and the dishes done and about 1/2 of Nick’s schoolwork finished. Penny has only thrown up one more time. We have 10 minutes before the Realtor is scheduled to show up with our potential buyers.

My son announces that he has pooped in his pants.

Super awesome. I stick him on the potty, change his clothes, light candles, and spray Febreze everywhere. Unfortunately, it still smells like poop.

Eddie gets home with seconds to spare and we get the kids and  the dog in the minivan and drive around aimlessly. There aren’t many destination options for a family full of sick children and their dog.

We decide that we should probably feed our kids at some point, so we go through the McDonald’s drive thu and decide to take our dinner to the park near our house. We also stop at Target for a new thermometer. The park is empty when we get there, so we don’t feel too guilty about our kids spreading their germs around.

Abby takes 2 bites of a chicken nugget and announces that she “has to poo poo.”  No problem, this park has bathrooms.

This park’s bathrooms are locked. We can’t go home because people are there and everybody knows that you only have about 30 seconds to play with when a preschooler tells you she has to use the potty.

I take my daughter behind an outbuilding and let her poop in the grass. (I’m not proud of it, but it happened, ok?)

We go back to eating our food.

Eddie thinks he might be sick. He doesn’t like Abby’s grass option, so he leaves in search of indoor plumbing. He takes the van. I am trapped with three sick kids and a dog.

In the meantime, a group of six or seven older kids, ranging in ages from about 8-12, has gathered at the playground. They are using very, um, colorful language.

On the way back from letting my daughter poop in the grass I put on my best teacher voice to confront them.

“Do you think it’s a good idea to let the little ones hear you talking like that?”

“No, ma’am, I’m sorry. I won’t do it anymore.”

“That’s what I thought.”

I might let my kids poop on public property, but the b-word is where I draw the line, evidently.

Where were we? Oh yeah, I’m trapped on the playground.

The foul-mouthed kids leave, but three different kids come over to the playground with their dad. If the shaved head, confederate flag tattoo, and various other less appropriate markings were any indication, their dad is a white supremacist. He is also chain-smoking ON the playground. Like, he is walking on the playground equipment smoking cigarettes.

I say nothing to him about this because, while I have proved myself more than capable of standing up to 8-year-old bullies, this dude is scary and I have no escape route.

His six-year-old daughter has taken a liking to my girls and keeps trying to touch my sick baby’s face and get me to give her our phone number. I change the subject and make dumb excuses like, “My hands are full of baby right now so I can’t use a pen.”

Eventually, Eddie returns and we can go home.

Nick’s school work gets finished.

The phone rings.

We have another showing tomorrow. It’s the same Realtor. I guess she likes the smell of poop.

Here we go again.

**P.S. After I wrote this I was thrown up on one more time.

***P.P.S. Make that two more times.

****P.P.P. S. make that three more times.

*****P.P.P.P.S We got this feedback from the realtor the next morning “My clients felt there was a smell to the house. They weren’t sure if it was pets or messy diapers.”  Told you.

Pumpkin Sweater Hats

October 17, 2012 By: Stephanie1 Comment

How to make a pumpkin sweater hat for fall. Super cute and can be a great start to a DIY Halloween costume

I can’t believe it’s been years since I made the original pumpkin sweater hats! They are really easy & fun. Here is the original tutorial from 2010:

I made pumpkin sweater hats for the kids and I am in love with them! I can’t wait for them to wear these hats to pick pumpkins later this fall. It’s  so adorable I can’t stand it.

Start with an orange sweater

Cut the band off the bottom. This will be the band of the hat. Cut it to match the circumference of the head of the person for whom you are making the hat. (Wrap it around his/her head and cut it to length)

Next, trace a plate to get a perfect circle. Use a dessert plate for small kids and a regular plate for bigger kids or adults.

Cut out the circle. Next, pin the strip to the circle, right sides together with the edge you cut toward the outside. (This will keep you from having to hem the bottom of the hat once it’s together.)

Sew along the outside edge.
There will be a small opening where the two ends of the band come together, sew that shut as well.

Now turn the hat right-side-out. There you have your basic sweater hat (the same one from my earlier tutorial), but we want to turn this one into a pumpkin.

Cut two pieces of green fabric (I used an old tee shirt) into the shape of leaves and a piece of brown fabric (I used a sweater) into a small rectangle.

Stitch around the edges to prevent unraveling and then sew these three pieces together.

Sew the stem and leaves onto the top of the hat and you have yourself a brand new pumpkin sweater hat.

You could pair it with an orange t-shirt for an easy DIY Halloween costume.

Hide your sweaters. These sweater hats are addictive. I’ve made 4 of them tonight.

And, as always, I like to see how much money I saved by making stuff myself. These pumpkin sweater hats retail at Gymboree for $15. (although they were on sale this weekend.) I just made 2 for free in less than half an hour. That’s $30 in my pocket. I’ll take it. 🙂

Tips for Wedding Crashers Everywhere

October 16, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

We were married in 2006. It was about a year after the movie Wedding Crashers came out, so it was still relatively common for people to be quoting the movie and joking about it, especially because it was a big wedding year among our social group.

It was the year I accidentally showed up at a friend’s wedding in the same dress as the bridesmaids.

What was not all that common, however, was to have actual, real-life crashers attend your wedding. But we did. Unfortunately for them, they were pretty much the dumbest wedding crashers of all time. Luckily, we can all learn from their mistakes.

The story goes like this:

We are at Ruth’s Chris in the Pier 5 hotel on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The restaurant is one of a few in the hotel and at any given time there may be several formal events happening. I am the bride, minding my own business, moseying about the reception in my very conspicuous huge white dress. “Great to see you! Thank you for coming. Yes, we leave on Sunday for the honeymoon…” etc.

Two guys I have never seen before come up to me. They are wearing suits and fit in well. They give me big hugs and congratulate me. BUT Eddie and I grew up together, so I know everyone who was invited. I am quite sure they were not on my guest list.

“I’m sorry, do I know you?”
“We’re friends of the groom. Well, we know you have to get back to your family.”

And they went back to mingling with our guests. I went over to Eddie and pointed them out. Of course, he didn’t know them either. We walked back over to them.

The Dumbest Wedding Crasher of All Time looked at my new husband and asked, “Who are you?”

“I’m the groom, who the —- are you? Get out of my wedding.”

Luckily, they left pretty quickly without trying to fight about it.
We have no idea how long they were there, but if they would have played their cards right, they might have been able to score a free dinner, or at least a few more drinks from the open bar.

So, my advice to any would-be future wedding crashers is…

1. Stay away from the bride and groom. This isn’t like the movies. They know that they don’t know you.

2. Figure out who the groom is, then refer to rule number 1.

3. If you get caught, just leave. (That’s the one thing our crashers did right.) It will make for a fun story in the future and the bride will be grateful you didn’t do anything dumb to ruin her night.

Cheers!

Cold Weather Craft: Bleach Paintings

October 9, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

It’s chilly here in PA this week!

Between the extra cool fall weather and getting into the trenches with our homeschooling, it makes me miss being in the classroom.

I wanted to share a super easy 5 minute craft with you. It also doubles as a science project. (Chemical reactions, anyone?)

I learned about this in a college art class for elementary school teachers. This craft is better for older kids, ages 8+, I would say.  (P.S. When I did this in the classroom the kids had to wear safety glasses and gloves. It’s always best to be overly cautious when it comes to kids and chemicals.)

You only need 3 supplies:

  • a very small amount of bleach
  • a q-tip
  • dark construction paper

Dip the Q-tip in bleach. (It’s probably best to let an adult do this part, just in case)

Draw a winter scene on the paper.

Wait 30 seconds or so and ta-da. Magic.

It’s more even more fun if you don’t tell them about the bleach and make them try to guess what you are using, or if you use a disposable “magic paint brush” and do it as a demonstration for little ones. 🙂

Save your paintings and use them as fun homemade holiday gift wrap!

I’ve seen Cheri from I Am Momma Hear Me Roar design t-shirts using a bleach pen. It might be fun to have your kids make their own.

Let me know if you try it.

My {not so} Lovely Lady Lump

October 8, 2012 By: Stephanie4 Comments

Today I am over at Wendy Nielsen.com in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month telling the story about the lump I found at age 25:

I do know how it feels though, to discover the lump.

I found mine a few years ago in a most unglamorous way; one day I was scratching my left armpit. It makes me giggle a little, but that really is how I found it. It felt like a tiny, hard little pebble at the top of my breast. I kept picturing the scene in Finding Nemo when they clog the filter with aquarium gravel.

I was immediately terrified. I was only 25 and had two very small children. I had an appointment two days later for my routine pap smear, so I waited to ask the doctor because I had already lined up a babysitter that day. Waiting for that appointment was horrible. I kept asking my husband to touch it to verify that it wasn’t just my imagination. It was tender to the touch and most definitely there. How could I not have noticed this before?
To read the rest of my story head over to Wendy’s site.

LINK UP: If Mommy Bloggers Ran Late Night TV

October 7, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Recently I have been subjected to more late night television than normal.

Between getting this house ready to go on the market and a baby who is kind of a night owl, I’ve watched my fair share of Conan and Leno monologues, to which I say meh.

Where are the late night shows that relate to the mommies (and daddies too) up doing 2am feedings? Do you know how many pre-dawn infomercials I had to endure during the first few months of each baby’s life?

C’mon, network execs. We are out here in the trenches losing sleep rocking screaming babies. We need you to be funny and relatable and not trying to sell us something for just $19.99 plus the cost of shipping. Pretty soon the sleep deprivation is going to take a quick left turn and morph into the ugly cry.

If I had my way I would join forces with all of the other fabulous and funny mommies in Blogland to create a brand new kind of sketch comedy show.

I asked around and moms everywhere agree, our show would be epic. I invited some fabulously talented ladies over to help me demonstrate.

Move over, Robot Chicken, Robyn from Hollow Tree Ventures is showing you up with her fresh new perspective in her hilarious staged photo series As the Dollhouse Turns.

Anna from My Life and Kids says that if asked to write for our new {imaginary} SNL-style show, “I would do a weekly skit on lies my mother told me… the rare gene that doesn’t allow our voices to work with microphones, the extra vertebrate that will paralyze us during organized dance…” You can read about those lies and more on Anna’s blog. There are some doozies.

Rebecca from Frugalista Blog.com said that she would be willing to offer her hilarious Tutorial on [how to wear] Spanx. Click over to her blog to watch the video. Oh, yes. There is a video.

And me? I think I would go with a character based on a certain little boy I know. I would call it “That’s Ridiculous, Nicholas!” It would feature a little boy embarrassing his mother in various ways by doing things like announcing in the department store that she carries cheese in her underwear. True story. (True that he said it, NOT true that I do it.)

And we want your ideas too! Link up below if you have a blog post, video, skit, or another idea that you think would fit in with our {imaginary for now} show.

(I apologize, but I’m having some technical difficulties with my linky tool. You are more than welcome to link to your favorite posts in the comments if you are having a hard time seeing the links.)

A Cheese-y Story

October 5, 2012 By: Stephanie22 Comments

Once upon a time, I was a very pregnant lady walking through Kohl’s with two toddlers squirming in an awkwardly long and hard to manage double stroller, just trying to use my 20% off coupon to stock up on mittens and sweatpants for said toddlers as the winter months loomed ahead.

I pretty much looked like this:

Except with a stroller. And I was probably waddling.

As soon as we got there my son announced he had to use the potty, so we hoofed it all the way to the back of the store and I squeezed my giant butt, my two kids, and our over-sized stroller into the handicapped stall, the only one big enough to accommodate all of us.

While we were there I decided to use the potty too, because when you are 8 months pregnant and you have the opportunity you take it.

I was also at the point in pregnancy when a woman needs to wear panty liners 24/7, just in case. In case of what? Use your imagination. There are plenty of yucky things that have the potential to start leaking when you get to a certain point. TMI? Sorry. Back to my story.

I took a panty liner out of my purse. It happened to have a yellow wrapper.

I guess my kids thought it resembled the Kraft Singles they are used to seeing me use to make their grilled cheese.

My son started yelling, “Mom! Why are you putting cheese in your undies? Cheese does not go there! Gross!”

I heard muffled giggles from the other stalls.

“This isn’t cheese. It’s…um..it’s like a mommy band-aid, I guess.”

“Do your undies have a boo-boo?”

“Well, no, but sometimes ladies start to bleed even if they don’t have a boo-boo….” My two-year-old daughter was starting to look horrified. I could see her poor little mind wondering if she was going to turn into a bloody corpse at any second because she is a girl.

“Ok, fine, nevermind. We’ll just call it cheese. It’s not a big deal.”

We made it out of the bathroom and through our shopping without further incident.

Until we were in line to check out, that is. This was a fairly long line full of plenty of other people within earshot, mind you.

My son started whining because he was hungry.

I told him that I was sorry, but I hadn’t brought any snacks in my purse today, to which he replied,

“That’s okay mommy, I can just have some of the cheese you keep in your undies!”

And we never went to Kohl’s again.
(Not true, we still go to Kohl’s all the time.)

The end.

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
