Guest Post from Paige Kellerman

December 4, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Today’s post is from the beautiful and talented Paige Kellerman of paigekellerman.com. I love Paige’s blog for her honesty and humor and I love that she broke up with Oreos. Personally, I’m still trying to find the strength to do the same. But today’s post is about a different topic, and it’s one to which I can relate. Here’s Paige. (Isn’t she pretty?)

You Can’t Wear Snow Boots Forever

Buying shoes for my children is only one of the many reasons you should feel sorry for me. I know we’ve just met and all, but I find a good and awkward friendship, thrust upon strangers, is built through lots of information you didn’t know you wanted to know.

Isn’t that right, Stephanie? She’s so cute. Look at the way she’s blocking my email address as we speak. Such a jokester, that one. You know, I know, that you know I’ll just forward you all those chain letters, from an unknown email address. Adorable.

Now then, where were we? Ahh, yes. When one of my children comes to me and points out they believe they’ve out-grown their shoes, I tend to do two things:

a.)    Make it personal by prostrating myself on the ground and screaming, “Why do you always do this to me?”

b.)    Ask a couple questions to clarify, such as, “Maybe they do fit, have you tried cutting out the heel? Or, “Do you think, perhaps, if you’d been better behaved, you wouldn’t have out-grown them?”

Eventually, the kids always end up showing me an episode of Dora the Explorer before I’ll believe other children have shoes that fit, and also that you only need to be the ripe old age of six to travel to walk to Ecuador, unattended. I was seven when I first did that, so the logic escapes me.

It’s not that my children outgrowing their shoes angers me, it’s just that I always through bricks through other people’s windshields when I get news of any kind. Kid’s shoes can get a little pricey. And finding ones that last is difficult. When my son out-grew his shoes this month, I tried to reason it out.

He still had snow boots that fit. He loves his snow boots. The public had a greater than forty, but less than fifty-percent chance of noticing he’d been wearing snow boots for eighteen years. This would work. If his feet got hot, he didn’t have to wear socks. At the pool, we’d just tell people he had something called a “Snowman Complex”.

As, in, “You wouldn’t be laughing if your kid thought his nose was a carrot.”

Yes, that was the ticket. He’d wear the boots. We’d “discover” a new phobia. And I wouldn’t have to buy new shoes.

As it always does, however, reason won out, I re-attached my coffee IV, and ended up commandeering a new pair of tennis shoes …durable, classically styled, probably last for a solid three months.

But, when and if my son out-grows these, I know we’ll have the snow boots, because I know, for a fact, kids never out-grow those. Right? Just cover your windshield.

Touche, Paige. I HATE when my middle daughter outgrows her shoes because it is so hard to find new ones. She might have the widest feet of any preschooler who ever lived. Thanks for stopping by!

Guest Post: House TalkN

December 3, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Please excuse my absence for the next few weeks. You might remember that our son is adopted out of foster care and really struggles with any sort of transition. We moved over the weekend and it has been hard on him, so I’m taking a little blog break to focus on the family.

I do have to say that my blogging friends really stepped up when they heard about my dilemma.  I sent out an S.O.S. for guest posts and several responded right away. The amazing gal here today had me her whole post in under an hour. I love being part of such an amazing community of women who are willing to step up and support each other. (It doesn’t hurt when they include pretty pictures, either.)

I’m excited to have Kerry from House TalkN here today to share some holiday decor! Take it away Kerry….

Lots of neighborhoods have a “progressive holiday party” where everyone stumbles walks house to house, enjoying festivities at each home.

Think of this as a blog version of a progressive holiday party! Share your favorite holiday memories or holiday posts in the comments!

Come on over and take a lookiloo at my “Home for the Holidays!”

I filled an old tool carrier with my white and silver treasures.
My Christmas village…the source of much teasing from the high brow crowd.
My daughters “white themed” tree!
The joy of their own tree- I don’t even care when “#1 Teacher” bear appears!
Stockings that I, sewing moron, made during a domestic coma!
Mercury glass makes my heart pitter pat!

Thanks for inviting me to your place for the holidays, Stephanie!

Wow! I love the tool carrier centerpiece! Make sure to check out the House TalkN Facebook page for some more decor ideas and to get to know Kerry’s fun and spunky personality.

My Tom Selleck Tramp Stamp

November 20, 2012 By: Stephanie27 Comments

Let’s rewind…

Way back when in our potty training Nicholas phase, I told our son that if he would just pee and poop on the potty he could wear big boy underwear AND he could have any kind he wanted. Superman undies, Thomas the Train, Mickey Mouse, whatever his little heart desired.

Do you know which superhero the kid asked for?

Tom Selleck.

He has a brief mention in the Disney movie Meet the Robinsons (That’s a favorite at our house. Adorable, quirky little misfit gets adopted by embarrassingly weird but loving family. Sound familiar?) Anyway, Nick heard his name and all of the sudden Tom Selleck was bigger than Buzz Lightyear around here. What can I say, the kid has good taste.

I was on the fence about whether it would be awesomely cool or super pervy to put the Mustache Man on a two-year-old’s underwear, plus I’m super lazy, so my poor, deprived son never got the Tom Selleck underwear he so desired.

We were reminiscing recently about how funny it was that Nick actually wanted Tom Selleck underwear and I got an idea.

You know who IS allowed to have Tom Selleck underwear? Grown azz women, that’s who. (And when I say “grown azz” I am referring to both the age and size of my badonkadonk. I’m also trying to keep it classy by substituting the z’s. You can see from the pictures below that I like to always stay classy.)

What better way to make granny panties cool again (ok, maybe they weren’t really ever cool in the first place, but now they have potential) than to add a picture of the King of Cool?

I drew a sketch of Tom Selleck.

Then I traced it onto the back of a pair of granny panties. The big maternity ones.

And then I made my husband take the most unflattering picture of me that ever existed and while doing so he said it looked like I had a Tom Selleck tramp stamp. (P.S. If you are in the market for a tramp stamp, Tom Selleck=way cooler than butterflies or squiggly swirly lines.)

You know your underwear is (are? Egads, what verb do I use?) going to be hanging out when you bend down to tie your kid’s shoe. This is how you own it.

Then my friend Wendy lovingly made the observation that my version of Tom Selleck looks like the Unabomber. Thanks, Wendy. There goes my idea to mass market them via Etsy shop.

Sigh.

The world is just not ready for all that awesome.

I guess it’s just you and me, Tom.

Giveaway: Kindle Fire and PIWTPITT Book

November 15, 2012 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Do you have a favorite holiday memory? A ridiculous one? A hilarious one? There’s a new book dedicated to funny holiday stories and observations and we’re giving away 19 autographed copies!

Hold your horses, I have to share my story first. I have a confession to make: I still believe in Santa. Maybe.

I saw him in action. For real. When I was four or five years old, I woke up in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve because I heard something down stairs. I knew it was him. I crept out of my bed and watched from the top of the stairs. From my post, I could see a man wearing red pants putting presents under our tree in the living room. I could only see his legs and his hands when he bent down to place each gift in its spot. I gasped and scrambled back in bed, because my parents had told me that if I wasn’t asleep in bed Santa wouldn’t leave any presents, but that sealed the deal. Now I was a believer for life.

Eventually in the upper grades my friends all stopped believing, but I insisted for an embarrassingly long time that he WAS real. I SAW him. When I was 13 I found pictures from that fateful Christmas. Coincidentally, my dad was wearing red sweat pants on that very Christmas morning. Hmmmm…

There are two possibilities. One is that Santa is 100% real, without a doubt. The second is that we were all very lucky it was the 80’s and my dad proudly rocked red pants.

Either way, totally winning. (What? Santa and Charlie Sheen references in the same blog post? It must be your lucky day.)

And speaking of winning…

Guess what?

Nineteen of your favorite mom humor bloggers had a meeting and we all agreed. There’s a brand new book that we think you NEED to read this holiday season. The title says it all.

Spending The Holidays With People I Want To Punch In The Throat is a heartwarming (yes, really!) collection of hilarious holiday-themed personal stories and observations written by none other than Jen of the well-known blog People I Want To Punch In The Throat.

If the holidays have you stressing about gift giving, cookie decorating, or where in the world to put your Elf on the Shelf, then you need to take a mommy time out and read a chapter or two.

And now you can have a chance to peruse the pages for free. Consider it our holiday gift to you. We are teaming up to give away 19 copies of the book. All you have to do is enter the giveaway using the Rafflecopter form below for your chance to win an AUTOGRAPHED copy! (Or if you are too excited to wait, you can buy the book and Kindle version here.)

We promise that it is both endearing and hilarious, but you don’t have to take our word for it. You can see for yourself. Several of us recorded videos of our favorite parts. Here Penny and I are in deep discussion over the merits of Christmas caroling. We have a weekly book club we like to call Books & Boobies, where I read and she nurses. I spared you the breastfeeding video.  (Yes, I actually made a video in which I was breastfeeding, and no, I did not swear in front of my baby. I have a built-in mute button.)

See? Told you. Now you want your own copy right? Well, Jen generously donated an autographed copy to every blogger participating in this giveaway so that we could increase your chances to win. You can enter using the Rafflecopter below. This giveaway is open to US residents only.

“But wait, that’s not all!” we say in our best Price is Right announcer voice. We couldn’t get a bunch of tech-savvy moms together for a book giveaway and not bring you an eReader, right? So we are also giving away a Kindle Fire!

NINETEEN winners will receive a copy of Spending The Holidays With People I Want To Punch In The Throat and ONE lucky Grand Prize winner will receive a Kindle Fire! What are you waiting for? Get clicking

Building The Dream: SOLD

November 14, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

We have good news.

Our house is pending sale. It only took about six weeks on the market. The inspection was last week and the appraisal was this morning. We are set to go to settlement the first week of December. Exciting and nerve wracking to be moving around the holidays, I tell you.

We’re going to live with my in-laws for a few months. Because winter weather is fast approaching, we probably will not be able to break ground on our new house until the spring. Deep breaths. Eventually all the stress will pay off. This time next year we will be IN.

Small Business Spotlight: Me To You Crochet

November 10, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

Disclaimer: I was NOT compensated for this post. I purchased a product from this company and was so impressed with the quality and service that I offered to do a review.

Recently my real-life college friend Amanda posted this adorable picture of her new baby on Facebook during a raven’s football game. (Sidenote: Check out Amanda’s blog. She’s one of those friends you want to hate, but can’t because she’s so sweet. Seriously, how can you be a doctor AND have a baby during your residency AND make the fanciest desserts that anyone has ever seen and blog about them AND be blessed to naturally look like a Barbie doll? It’s not fair, and yet I love you anyway.)

Amanda gave me permission to re-post the photo for you. Adorbs, yes?

Of course people wanted to know where she got the adorable hat in custom colors to match our team, and she said it was from the Etsy shop Me to You Crochet.

I clicked over to check it out and fell in love too. Not only are the products super cute, they are really affordable, especially for hand-made. The majority of items in the shop are below the $20 price point. Plus it is run by a woman named Teresa, which is my mom’s name, so that’s always a good sign.

I love this Christmas hat so much ($18)

but I think this one might be my favorite ($17)

(images above from Me To You Crochet)

I ended up ordering a red headband for Penny that we will use as part of her Christmas outfit.

I was lucky and got my order in last week before the holiday price was in effect. I sent an Etsy convo to Teresa the shop owner about the color for my order and she responded the same day. My order came VERY fast, about 5 days from when I placed the order, and I really liked that there were buttons on the back of the headband to make it adjustable. My 3-year-old was jealous and asked if she could have one too. I might be able to use it for both of my girls because of the adjustable feature. We will probably also use it as an ear warmer throughout the winter because Penny doesn’t care for hats.

I love shining the spotlight on small businesses, especially those that are owned by women and most especially when it means I get to go shopping for handmade versions stuff that I would be buying anyway.

Make sure to check out Me to You Crochet

And follow me on Facebook for more updates on small businesses and other random gold nuggets, like pictures of the rotten banana peel that was recently discovered in our couch. (Sadly, that’s a true story.)

GIVEAWAY: Keurig Week 2

November 9, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

I’m really excited to be able to team up with some fabulous other bloggers to bring you this giveaway throughout the month of November! My generous in-laws gave us a Keurig last Christmas and, let me tell you, it was a godsend just a few weeks later when our third baby arrived. There were many mornings when Eddie was brewing himself a cup to help keep him awake on the drive to work after Penny had kept us up for a majority of the night! We aren’t even coffee drinkers, but we love our Keurig. My favorite K-cup is the hot apple cider. Yum. And now you can win one too!

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
