How to Clean a White Farmhouse Sink

May 14, 2014 By: Stephanie11 Comments

how to clean a white sink

One of my must-haves when we designed our kitchen was a double bowl, white farmhouse-style sink.

I love my sink. It holds a ton of dishes, it’s the perfect depth for me not to be constantly bending over, it holds large pots, and the double bowl makes it easy to have a “clean side” and a “dirty side” when I’m washing pots and pans. Plus, it was really affordable. Our sink is from IKEA.  It’s the DOMSJO Double Bowl. It cost about $300, which is insanely cheap if you have ever tried pricing out other apron front double bowl sinks.

The only downside to having this type of sink is that it can be kind of a pain to keep clean.

I learned how to clean a white farmhouse sink a few years ago from my friend Liz’s mom, Ms. Jeannie. We had a white sink in our last house as well. I’ve been cleaning my sink this way ever since I saw Ms. Jeannie do it to hers. [Read more…]

Lauren and Ryan’s Wedding

May 13, 2014 By: Stephanie1 Comment

with groomsmen

My childhood BFF got married over the weekend. Our family had the opportunity to play a very big role. I was a bridesmaid, Abby was the flower girl, and Eddie even got ordained over the internet and was the officiant for the ceremony! (He did an amazing job. Everyone was highly impressed with his matrimony skills.)

The ceremony and reception were at Running Hare Vineyard in Maryland. They also rented out a very cool nearby lighthouse property for the weekend. That’s where the rehearsal dinner and a meet and greet brunch the day after the wedding were held, and also where the bridal party got dressed and ready for the ceremony.

It was very cool to be a big part of this special day. Lauren and I would talk about our weddings when we were just little girls. I’m sure 7-year-old Lauren would have been very pleased with her older self. It was a beautiful weekend, almost like a destination wedding, but just a few hours from home.

Now I will stop babbling and let you look at pictures. We don’t have a ton from the ceremony itself since we were standing up at the alter, but I love the ones we do have:

Abby Is Five!

April 25, 2014 By: Stephaniecomment

This week our middle daughter, Abby, turned five.

Even though she is our middle child, since her older brother is adopted, she had the honor of being my first pregnancy.

She was, by far, our most difficult baby. She could stay awake for 20 hours at a time and would only stop crying if you were holding her vertically, standing up, and swaying back and forth a certain way. We got through her entire first year without more than two hours of sleep at a time. She could (and still can) hit octaves only matched by Mariah Carey. When I delivered her, they had to keep her separated from all of the other babies in the hospital nursery because her ear-piercing screams woke up all of the other babies at the same time and caused quite a commotion. That’s Abby, rallying the troops for her cause since Day 1.

There was no denying that she was beautiful, though. Actually, it drives me kind of nuts because often the first and only thing people comment on when speaking to her is the way that she looks. There is so much more to her than that. But even as a baby, strangers would come up to us and say that she should be a model. Once I even had an artist I had never met before approach me and ask me for a picture of her to use as a basis for an oil painting.

Ten Reasons Why I’m Not Giving Up Our Land Line

April 22, 2014 By: Stephanie6 Comments

I don’t know about you, but this conversation comes up at least once a week in our house.

Should we get rid of the land line and just use our cell phones? It almost seems to be a battle of the sexes.

From what I gather in my personal experience and those of my friends, it’s usually the husbands who want to cut the ties and get rid of the land line because it eliminates an extra monthly bill and there are less telemarketers to deal with. Fair enough.

However, I’ve been really reluctant to give up our land line (as have many of my female friends). I shared a few of my reasons with the Binkies and Briefcases Facebook page, and you guys had so many more great reasons to add to my list!

I’ve put together a list of reasons why we ladies prefer to keep our land lines, thankyouverymuch.

"We are thinking about giving up our landline." Here are 10 things you should consider first.

Our Trip to Grennsboro, NC

April 7, 2014 By: Stephanie6 Comments

Over the weekend I had the incredible opportunity to speak at the Women’s Leadership Summit, which was hosted by the Junior League of Greensboro in North Carolina.

Eddie and I have never been to Greensboro, so we were super excited to check it out and enjoy a kid-free weekend.

The Junior League graciously hosted us at the O’Henry hotel, which was a beautiful hotel that is also a member of the Southern Living Hotel Collection.

We hit more traffic than we expected, so all day Thursday (10 hours) was spent driving. We got to the hotel around 9pm. Luckily, the hotel restaurant, Green Valley Grill, was still open and we were able to have a late dinner. Eddie and I split an order of their truffle fries. Seriously awesome. The restaurant was a really fun mix of elegant and casual. The food was affordable, but they had swanky options (like tapas and lamb) too. [Read more…]

My Trashy Minivan: The Ick Awards

April 6, 2014 By: Stephaniecomment

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Clorox.

clx_ick_awards_logo-blue-610x331

I often can’t even believe the things that come out of my mouth on a daily basis.

Like the other day when I had to put on my sternest voice and try to sound intimidating while saying, ““Young man, in this house you will use the word ‘toot.’ Do you hear me?” to the 7-year-old who won’t stop saying the f-word that rhymes with “heart.”

Or when I had this little gem of a conversation:

“Is that snot on your face?”

“No, my nose is sweating.”

“Hmmm. Why is your nose sweating?”

“Because it has been running.”

“We call that snot.”

But the conversations are nothing compared to the guessing games.

Is that chocolate or poop?

Is that a raisin?

Why is this sticky?

And my personal favorite: When you foresee something happening, but there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

Like how every stinking day I tell my daughter to go to the potty before we sit in the car line to pick her big brother up from school. She’ll sit on the potty at home and not go, but 10 minutes later we are having to leave our coveted place in the front of the car line to find a place to park, get the car seats unbuckled, and rush up the giant hill to ring the bell and get into the main office of the school because NOW she has to go.

You try the best you can to be prepared, but as a mom sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

Except maybe keep a LOT of of junk in your minivan. You know, “just in case.”

My trashy minivan has saved me from more than one parenting disaster. (When I say trashy, I mean that in the most literal sense. As in, my van is full of trash.)

Just the other day, I completely forgot that it was Wacky Wednesday at preschool, but my trashy van was fully stocked with a paper princess crown and one stray mitten. Trashy minivan saves the day!

And there is one times that will stick in my memory as the day that my trash van truly saved us.

Remember how I told you that I am always stuck in the car line with a 4-year-old with sudden potty emergencies?

Well, a few weeks ago we were in quite a pickle because the elementary school kids had been dismissed and we were in the middle of a car line that was starting to move. Of course that is the time when the little darling decided she just had to potty right now.

I couldn’t get out of the car line because there was a wall of elementary school children blocking the way to the parking lot and I couldn’t leave my van where it was because we were in the middle of a car line that was starting to move.

We only had one choice: The 4 day old Arby’s cup that was still sitting in one of my 14 cup holders.

I don’t know if you have ever tried to have one hand on the wheel navigating a parking lot full of small children, while using the other hand to help a preschooler empty her bladder into a paper cup, but I can tell you one thing…there is splashback.

I don’t think my trashy minivan and I have ever been more thankful for wipes.

She might be trashy, but now at least she has recovered from her tinkle sprinkle.

I’m Outta Here

April 2, 2014 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Eddie and I have the fabulous opportunity to travel to Greensboro, North Carolina this week so that I can speak at the Women’s Leadership Summit.

My dad and step-mom are taking over our house and kid duties so that Eddie and I can get away for the weekend.

I’m super excited about the conference! I’m speaking on the theme of seeing other women as colleagues instead of competition (which, not coincidentally, is the also keynote theme of BlogU this year). It’s a topic I am very passionate about and I am thrilled to share my story and my voice with other women at the summit, hear the other speakers, and meet a lot of new faces.

I’ll tell you all about it when I get back later this weekend.

But I just wanted to let you know where I was because Get Skinny Saturday will be a little late this week. 🙂

Get Skinny Saturday: Week 13

March 29, 2014 By: Stephaniecomment

Just checking in for Get Skinny Saturday.

We have had one of the hardest weeks of our lives, so honestly my weight was the very last thing on my mind.

I weighed in this morning at 179.8.

One pound more than last week.

Actually, I’m surprised it wasn’t more because I pretty much ate my weight in cannolis and Cadbury eggs last night. Stress eating is not the smartest idea. I know.

I did do more exercising this week.

Now that the weather is better, I think I am going to take up walking (or maybe, dare I say it? running.) outside.

I have been getting a few comments and emails from you about how you are really rocking your weight loss, and I am so proud of you guys!

Rock on.

Frugal Friday

March 21, 2014 By: Stephanie10 Comments

I have to admit, I have been way less than frugal lately, especially on our food. We can spend a CRAZY amount of money on food. Eddie and I like to have date nights after the kids are asleep, so we often order take out and pick up a movie from Redbox. It’s still cheaper than going out to dinner and a movie and hiring a baby sitter, but $30-$40 dinners a few nights each week add up! (This week we did steaks from Texas Roadhouse.)  And one night I fully intended to make dinner after getting home from an appointment, but when we got home the spaghetti sauce I had taken out to defrost was still frozen solid, so we ordered pizza instead. That was just me being lazy because I could have given everyone peanut butter sandwiches or something, but I didn’t want to.

We’ve been very fortunate lately with our finances and it is easy to get lazy and not worry about it, but I know that’s just irresponsible, plus I like saving money, so I’m making an effort to get back to a more frugal way of living, regardless of whether or not we *have* to.

Food splurging aside, we actually did do a few things to save money recently. (And, P.S. when I went to the grocery store today, the total was finally back under $100. I need to take my own advice and get back into the meal planning).

For Nick’s birthday, he said he wanted to go to Chuck E. Cheese. Instead of having a huge party with his entire class, we just drove our little family of 5 there last Friday and got a family meal deal. The kids had a blast and Nicholas got exactly what he wanted. When I asked him what his favorite part of the day was he spread out his hands and said, “The whole thing!”

birthday smile

Also in the name of frugality, Eddie cut Nick’s hair and I learned that if you send two boys into the bathroom with the clippers, one of them is going to come out with a mohawk. [Read more…]

Hanging Out With The Mom of the Year, Vlogging About BlogU

March 18, 2014 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Yesterday Meredith from Mom of the Year was at my house and we were busy little bees. We hired two very capable young ladies to watch our children and we shut ourselves in my home office for five hours working on all of the big plans we have for the upcoming BlogU Conference.

I hope you are coming, because it is going to be AMAZING.

We made a video all about it. If you want to learn more about the conference, or if you just want to hear why my hair looks so ridiculously greasy, check it out:

We also recorded a radio show to answer some of the additional questions that have popped up in the Facebook group. You can listen to the podcast here:

Discover Blogs Internet Radio with The Blog University on BlogTalkRadio

The course descriptions for BlogU are now up on our website. I hope you’ll check them out. It really is going to be a great time and we are going to learn so much from each other!

I hope I see you there in June!

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
