Back to School Giveaway With Ni-Chern Designs

August 19, 2013 By: Stephanie30 Comments

I can’t believe school starts this week!

Nick is going back into kindergarten (second time’s a charm?) and I only have one more year until this one leaves the nest.

Ni-Chern

How did it happen so fast?

I’m in no hurry to rush it, but Abby is just BEGGING to be able to go to kindergarten like her big brother. She will go to pre-school for a few hours three times a week, but she doesn’t think that is enough.

Abby loves the idea of school. She likes to play school with her baby sister and her dolls and every day she asks me for scrap paper and a pencil so that she can practice her “spelling.” (which is just drawing letters randomly all over the place.) She has been leaving crayons and pencils and pens all over my desk and the kitchen table. The other day Penny got a hold of one of those rogue pencils and I before I grabbed it away I had visions of her tripping and putting it straight through her 19-month-old eye as she toddled around the house.

That’s why when Nicole of Ni-Chern Designs offered me a pouch to review the very first question I asked was

Would it work as a pencil case?

Nicole promised it would and she emailed us some pictures of fabric choices. I knew Abby would love her new pouch as soon as I read on the About section of Nicole’s Etsy shop that Ni-Chern literally means “little girl.” I let her pick and she chose a design with pink kitty cats, of course. My dear middle child is the girliest girl on the planet.

The package came just a few days later.

Ni-Chern Designs

Abby was a little excited. Can you tell?

 Ni-Chern Etsy Review

She literally said, “I love it.” and gave it a hug.

The fabric is super adorable and the zipper is strong and well-made. Although, I have to admit I was a little skeptical that the pouch was big enough to work as a pencil case. It was just so little and cute.

Ni-Chern Designs KC

We put it to the test and I am happy to say that it does, in fact, hold several pencils, a small sharpener, safety scissors, a glue stick, a pink eraser, and crayons and still zips easily with room to spare.  It’s the Goldilocks of pencil cases, just right for Abby’s school supplies.

I also love how the bright interior makes it easy to find what you are looking for as you dig for just the right color crayon.

I took the picture below to give you a better idea of the scale of the pouch.

Ni-Chern Giveaway

Of course, you don’t have to use it for a pencil case. There are a million and one uses for pouches like these. Make up brushes? Feminine hygiene products? Hair ties? This little pouch is just as versatile as it is adorable.

But since I have school on the brain this week, I kept looking at the other items in Nicole’s shop and thinking Back-to-School thoughts.

Like how these bright, fun key fobs would be great to send house keys along with your bus riders.

 Ni-Chern key fob

And I wish I had a lanyard this cute back in my classroom days to display my teacher’s badge.

Ni-Chern lanyard

And this craft apron would have been awesome to hold my dry erase markers, behavior bucks,  and other teaching supplies.

ni-chern apron

And it’s still on my wishlist to hold nails and my Kreg jig during our upcoming house projects.

Go ahead, click over and start drooling over the Ni-Chern Etsy shop for a while. I’ll wait.

……..

Did you find something you liked? That was rhetorical. Of course you did.

Guess what?

Nicole has agreed to give one lucky reader a $15 credit to Ni-Chern Designs. Enter using the Rafflecopter below.

This giveaway is open to US residents only.

Happy back to school week from our family to yours!

Ni-Chern designs provided me with a pouch to review for this post. All opinions are my own.

Putzing

August 15, 2013 By: Stephanie5 Comments

For several years when I was in college I lived with my grandmother. She was in her eighties by then and spent a lot of her time at home. She would sit in a chair by the window, walk around with a dust rag, never actually dusting anything, or just sit and tell me stories about years gone by.

She called those moments “putzing” and at the end of the day she would usually tisk tisk herself for not getting more accomplished.

putzing

What Mommom did not realize is this: It is in the Land of Putzing that bonds are formed.  Unbreakable bonds between a granddaughter and her mommom. Between two tween girls laying on the floor reading teeny bopper magazines with bare feet swinging and bubble gum popping. Between a husband and a wife lazily snuggling on a couch.

Even between grown women putzing around on the internet.

Over dinner a few weeks ago Yvonne from Stone Gable told me that she sees us as the Laura Ingalls Wilders of our time, documenting the every day through our blogs, preserving memories for future generations. I have never heard it described in a better way. We share our lives, our children, our homes and families through these blogs and in doing so we forge strong friendships.

Like many of my current friends, I met friend Courtney though blogging. Courtney has always had a gift for recognizing the beauty and the value behind moments that others may just see as “putzing around.”

She even named her blog Our Small Moments. She took beautiful pictures to record everyday interactions. Wrote about the small stuff because she knew it would add up to be big stuff.

Tragically, Courtney was right.

When her husband, Scott, was diagnosed with cancer, Courtney fought even harder to capture every small moment that she could.  Her family fought for each small moment with Scott that they could get, but there would never be enough.

Scott died this week.

Courtney and her two beautiful children are left to pick up the pieces.

And as a community of her fellow bloggers, writers, wives, mothers, and friends, our hearts have ripped wide open.

As women tend to do, we started buzzing and organizing right away. Although we are scattered around the country and unable to be there in person to hold up our friend as she lowers her husband into the ground today, we will still be here for Courtney.

Putzing around on the internet.

And if you are putzing here with us today, reading our blogs and Facebook feeds and wishing there was something you could do, please consider clicking over to the fundraising page that has been established in Scott’s honor. If you can donate $1 or several to show Courtney your love in a practical way,  please do. If not, please visit and leave her a virtual hug.

It is these small things that add up to be big ones.

  scott

Building the Dream: Decision Time

August 14, 2013 By: Stephanie2 Comments

This was a week full of TONS of choices for the house.

Selecting the Finishes in a New Home Build

We picked our flooring (Mohawk Rockford Solid hardwood 3.25″ planks in Red Oak Chocolate)

Mowhawk chocolate flooring

We also picked carpet, vinyl (for the kid’s bathroom and the laundry closet), and tile for our master bathroom.

We chose the vanities and sinks for our bathrooms. We chose faucets. Forgive the phone pics…

building a new house

We chose paint colors. (We’re only actually using 2 of the colors in this picture. You’ll just have to wait to see which ones. 😉 )

National Trust for Historic Preservation Paint Colors

We’ve decided that we want all of the colors to be from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Even though the house is brand new, we think these colors will help us achieve the craftsman style that is our favorite and it also made it much easier to narrow down ALL the choices that were available in the paint aisle!

Just about all of our interior walls are up now. Yesterday we had a walk-through with the electrician. The control freak in me LOVES that custom building means we get to make every little tiny tiny decision, right down to where each outlet and light switch will be placed.

It’s so fun to see the rooms start to take shape!

I Clean Our Toilet With Toothpaste

August 12, 2013 By: Stephanie61 Comments

Have you ever stopped by a friends house to drop off a book she let you borrow (was it this one?) and you popped in to use the bathroom?

And you are good friends, so she didn’t even bother to pick up the Legos on the living room floor, and you smiled as you walked by and decided that you love her just a little bit more for letting you see that.

And when you get to the bathroom you notice that the toilet is clean. And you are happy it’s clean because you are going to use it, but secretly you hate her a little bit because you know your toilet wouldn’t look that clean if someone was just popping in. And you know she didn’t just clean it for you because she was kind enough to leave the kids’ bath towels in a pile on the floor and besides, it doesn’t smell like bathroom cleaner in here.

I’m going to tell you how to cheat so you can always be that friend with the clean toilet. Because who doesn’t want to be that friend?

Use toothpaste.

Crazy toilet cleaning trick that works! Great for just before guests come over.

It totally works. It’s weird, but it is awesome.

I read this tip a few years ago on a list of something like “101 unusual uses for household objects.” I tried it and I was hooked. It takes less than 30 seconds.

I don’t clean the toilet like this every time, obviously, but I do it a lot if I have short notice that company is coming over. I don’t want the house to smell like chemicals. I’d rather give the “Of course I keep it this clean all the time.” ::wink. wink.:: impression.

So I wipe the outside and the seat of the toilet with a baby wipe and I squirt toothpaste in the bowl.

True story.

Hold it up high so it doesn’t actually get near the toilet, especially if you still plan on using the same toothpaste to brush your teeth, and squirt a dollop down in the bowl.

(Please don’t try to clean the outside of your toilet with toothpaste, that will just make a big mess! Baby wipes, people. they’re amazing.)

Photographic evidence:

Crazy Toilet Cleaning Trick That Works!

Toothpaste is made for cleaning the enamel on your teeth, so it also works really well to clean the enamel on your porcelain throne.

I don’t make up the rules. It’s called science.

Let me know if you try it!

If you liked this post, I would so appreciate your pins and shares! I would also love to connect with you on my Facebook or Pinterest page!

Healthy French Fries, Say What?

August 9, 2013 By: Stephanie11 Comments

The other day I made homemade french fries for the first time and I was really happy with the way they came out! (I’ve made sweet potato fries a bunch of times, but I’ve never used regular potatoes before this, go figure.)

Healthy Boardwalk-Style French Fries from Binkies and Briefcases

Don’t shoot me, but I am going to go ahead and put the “healthy” label on these. Yes, they are fried, but I used organic potatoes from our local CSA and I only used 3 tablespoons of coconut oil to fry the entire batch-enough for our family of five.

See? That’s not a lot of oil.

How to make healthy french fries

Healthy Boardwalk-Style Fench Fries

Did you notice we were eating rotisserie chicken again? I wasn’t kidding when I told you we eat it all. the. time.

The secret to these is to cut your potato into pretty skinny sticks and fry them in small batches. TWICE. Doing it twice is the secret to getting them nice and crispy and golden brown. I make my sweet potato fries the same way.

The kids were really excited about these!

Building the Dream: Interior Walls

August 7, 2013 By: Stephaniecomment

Selecting the Finishes in a New Home Build (1)

This week the crew is continuing the roof. We have a very complicated roof, apparently, and they are working really hard, but it is kind of slow-going. Thursday will mark one calendar month since they started the roof and we still probably won’t be ready for shingles.

z house 1

Thankfully, they are now to a point that enough of the house is under the roof that work can continue, even if it rains. Since we did get some rain this week, the guys started framing the interior walls.

I LOVE being able to get a better idea of the sizes of the rooms. There is nothing quite like the feeling when something that has only lived in your head and on paper starts to come together in 3D!

Haven 2013 Wrap-Up

August 6, 2013 By: Stephanie11 Comments

I was SOOOOO excited to go to the Haven conference this year!! My mom bought me a ticket as an early birthday present and she went with me. I have so much to tell you, I think the easiest way will be to break it down by day.

Thursday

We flew into Atlanta around lunch time. (There were even four other Pennsylvania bloggers who were going to Haven on the same flight!)  At the airport mom and I were looking for a cab and a nice man in a suit asked if we needed help. We told him we needed a taxi and it turned out that he was a limo driver waiting on a passenger whose flight had been delayed. He offered to drive us to the hotel in his stretch town car for the same price as a taxi ride. The trip was off to a good start!

Thursday night was registration. We were given our swag bags and then there was a cocktail party. It was so cool to meet people in person who I had been following for years! I talked to Mandi from Vintage Revivals and Miss Mustard Seed herself for a little while. Mandi really liked my Stitch Fix dress and Marian signed my book. They were both super nice and Marian even suggested we go shopping when she found out how close we live to each other.

Mom and I grabbed dinner at the hotel restaurant and then it was bedtime.

Haven Conference 2013

Friday

Friday there was a welcome and key note speech by Ana White. This was THE main reason I wanted to go to Haven. I have been following Ana for her entire career. I think I was one of her first 1,000 followers. She has been such an inspiration and empowering force in my life. She showed me that girls can use power tools and taught me how to build my own furniture! That’s pretty awesome. Can you tell I was excited that morning?

Haven 1

I went to a prayer meeting in the morning with some of the other bloggers and we were a little late for the opening. Ana spoke about focusing on your content and believing in yourself.  She suggested ignoring SEO because if your stuff is the best people will find it, regardless of how many hash tags you use or linky parties you join. She spoke about her journey from being a young working mom waitressing with her baby on her back to where she is now, with millions of followers all over the world. So many people wanted to see her speak that it was standing room only.

 Haven 2

After Ana’s keynote, we went to our first class. I chose Let’s Case This Joint with Sandra from Sawdust Girl,  Brittany from Pretty Handy Girl, and Traci from Beneath My Heart. It was so fun! It was very hands-on and they taught us how to use a miter saw and we worked together to install door casing, floorboards, a farmhouse paneling treatment, and crown molding. Brittany and Sandra did most of the instruction and they were so patient and encouraging! We even made templates for each kind of angle you may need to cut for crown molding. It was the first time I ever understood it. Using the templates was MUCH easier than the upside-down and backwards way I have helped Eddie do before.

We took a break for lunch, then I went right back to the same room and did another hands-on workshop with the representatives from Kreg and Ryobi. They showed us how to use the Kreg Jig and the Ryobi tools and answered all of our questions. I appreciated that I never felt like they were talking down to me.

In the meantime, my mom was sitting in other sessions about building relationships with brands and getting published in magazines. She is not a blogger or a DIYer, but I was glad to have her there because there were a lot of times I wished I could be two places at once. I was happy we could split up and she was taking great notes for me.

The last session I did was advanced advertising with Rhoda from Southern Hospitality, Becky from Infarrantyly Creative, and Cassity from Remodelaholic. I have been following Becky and Cassity for years. They have each featured projects for me before, but this was the first time I ever met them in person and I was blown away by how SMART and business-savvy those ladies are. They shared in detail about ways to earn money from your blog and the different ways that work for each of them.

Friday night there was a cocktail hour at the hotel, followed by a dinner and dance party across the street.

We were fed very well all weekend. We didn’t stay super long, but I heard it got WILD later in the evening!

Haven food

Saturday

I had a hard time sleeping that night, so I tried to use my extra awake time wisely. Ana White had been very hard to find in the sea of people and I was determined to meet her no matter what since we may never be in the same place ever again. I tweeted poor Ana in the middle of the night and I also sent her a Facebook message that I really wanted to meet her before we left. She may or may not now think that I am a creepy stalker, but I did get to meet her first thing in the morning and I got my copy of her book signed!

I went to the photography with Kristen Duke session in the morning. I was super excited to meet Kristen as well.  I love her work and it was amazing to be able to get practical tips from her. I also went to the Social Media session that afternoon.

My final session was with Whitney and Ashley, the sisters behind Shanty 2 Chic. They built a behind-the-door spice rack and managed to get it done during the class while being hilarious and answering our questions. These girls need their own tv show. They are super talented, not to mention gorgeous, and they are two of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Would you believe that between the two of them they have eight kids?!

Haven 12

The closing and wrap-up got everyone emotional. There was a video of several bloggers who got to work with GMC and Habitat for Humanity last year to decorate a home as a surprise for a deserving family, then a very moving speech about using our social media influence to “do good on a grand scale.” I already have a project in mind. Stay tuned.

Friday night my mom took me to dinner at Ruth’s Chris, which was across the street from our hotel.

dinner with mom

As soon as we got back from dinner I crashed. We had a lot of fun, but it was exhausting!

Sunday

Sunday was a full day of travel. We headed to the airport (and learned we were on the same flight as Doreen, again!) in the morning and our flight left around noon. We had several bags full of swag to check. The Haven sponsors were VERY generous! We flew into Baltimore, stopped for lunch, and then I got in the car and drove back to Pennsylvania. I didn’t get home until just before dinner.

I had an amazing time! Even if you are not a blogger, Haven was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it!

P.S. Monday

Ryobi tweeted me that I won $300 worth of their tools through a contest they were having at Haven. How awesome is that??!!! I can’t wait to use them on some projects for the new house!

#ad My Favorite Lady Lump Stories for the International Breast Milk Project

August 5, 2013 By: Stephanie3 Comments

IBMP_webad05

It’s no secret to you guys that my boobs kind of get around the internet. Wait, let me try that again.

What I meant was, if my analytics are correct, some of your favorite posts from me have been about boobs.

I told you about  the time a priest saw me naked.

I told you about the time my mom got stuck in a mammogram machine.

I wrote a letter to Santa asking for a breast reduction.

I told you about the time my mom humiliated me when I was fifteen because she made me take off my bra and give it to my sister.

And there are plenty more stories where those came from. Did I ever tell you about the time I accidentally squirted breast milk on my husband while he was all dressed up and getting ready to leave for a big meeting?

Or the time Nicholas got frustrated because Penny was crying in public and he screamed, “Mom, can’t you just feed her with those big ovals?!”

Or the time I accidentally flashed a group of high school boys when I was picking up my brother from school because I had been breast feeding in the parking lot and I was too sleep deprived to remember to put my boob away after the baby finished eating.

Yeah, my boobs get around.

And thanks to the International Breast Milk Project, yours can too. Well, at least their milk can.

They say. “Our vision is that every infant in the world have access to donor human milk as a first choice when a mother’s own milk is not available. We aim to create awareness for the need for donor human milk, mobilize donors, and provide donor milk to infants in need.”

I was happy to partner with the Give Milk project today. Mostly so that I get to hashtag the word #boob as a “professional obligation,” but also because they are doing important work and saving lives and stuff. Go to breastmilkproject.org to check them out and see how you can sign up to donate milk.

This post was sponsored by the International Breast Milk Project. All opinions and slightly inappropriate boob stories are my own.

Building the Dream: Gables and Names

July 31, 2013 By: Stephanie9 Comments

This week we’ve started making a little more progress.

We have applied to get special permission for Nicholas to start the school year at the public school near our property, although the house won’t be finished yet. I would hate to have him start the year at a different school just to be there for a few weeks.

The crew has been working on the front of the house, particularly the gable dormer.

house with dormer

house dormer

I’d really like to come up with a special name for our property. I fell in love with the idea after meeting Yvonne from Stone Gable, who lives very close to us and hearing about the history behind her home. (Yvonne will be attending the Haven conference with me this week and my plan is to stalk her in the friendliest way possible, of course-and force convince her to be my style mentor. I will call her Auntie Yvonne and we will sip lemonade on her gorgeous wrap-around porch. Or she will call the police. One or the other.)

We need help with this naming business. We’re not very good. The best Eddie and I came up with after hours of brainstorming was Green Acres and, um, that has already been taken by a cheesy old tv show, so….please give me suggestions if you have them!!

There has also been a lot of this:

putting together cabinets

Eddie had been letting the kids help him put together the kitchen cabinets. We now have half of the boxes built. There are cabinets in two closets and the living room in the apartment where we are staying while the house is built, and more in a storage unit. They are taking over!

Choosing the Countertops

I took the kids all around town on Monday and got countertop quotes from 3 different places.

Right now I am in love with white granite that looks like marble, like the island in this image from Rabbit Runn Designs:

white granite

Sadly, I learned that there is NO WAY that it is going to fit into my budget. Bummer. Every place I went had it labeled as one of their “exotics” and it was priced at almost $100/foot. I need over 55 feet plus cutouts for two sinks and a cooktop and installation fees and and and…$$$$$.  Plus I heard rumors that it will stain and we are not easy on our counters around here.

But look how pretty it looks. 🙁 This kitchen by Samantha Manning has a very similar layout to ours and I’ve been using it as inspiration.

Traditional Kitchen by Lexington Kitchen & Bath Designers Creative Kitchen and Bath

Can we pause and just take a moment to grieve the loss of the white granite I will never have?

Sigh.

Thank you.

The run-of-the-mill granite from Lowes was the most affordable quote I got (by almost $2,000! It was actually about the same price as installed laminate, which was pretty crazy.) But it was also my least favorite option. I thought it already felt dated. Right now I am leaning toward the solid surface (Corian-style) counters from Home Depot.  They looked about a gazillion times better in the store than they do online. They were more expensive than Lowes, but it was still in my budget and I liked their color choices much better. Also, I did not appreciate that Lowes had a weird rule about choosing a different material for the island. You weren’t allowed to mix grades, so you couldn’t choose a nicer material to feature on the island and use a cheaper neutral on the perimeter. That’s a really dumb rule if you ask me. The third place we went was a privately owned granite yard and their prices were pretty comparable to the big box stores, but they were booked solid for three months, so they probably won’t be able to install within our necessary time frame.

So far this is the hardest decision I’ve had to make. Each style and color brings such a drastically different feel to the space (or at least I think it will. It’s hard when there’s not even a room yet to take samples into) and I want something I’m going to love for 20+ years, so I think I’m going to avoid looking at Pinterest kitchens (gasp!) for a little while and try to go with something neutral (and on-budget!) that can transition through style phases with me.

Look at me being all grown-up and making practical decisions and stuff.

I hope I can start showing you finished spaces very, very soon!!!!

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
