March Madness

Welcome back! Be sure to check out my Email Newsletter. Thanks for visiting!

My March Madness does not really involve basketball, although that tends to dominate the tv in our house because hubby is into the tournament. So far, this March is a flurry of appointments and evaluations for Nicholas because his third birthday (on the 16th) put him into a different category for the special education services he receives.

Also, I am trying to get in a mini family vacation in the form of a long weekend before my employee gives birth next month because I’m sure I’ll be particularly busy when that happens since there will be less help at the toy library. However, I’m not sure if we will be able to visit my family in Virginia as planned this coming weekend because the whole family has been struck with a terrible chest cold.

In the meantime, I have been contacted by an investor who is intrigued by the concept of my business and is willing to fund its movement toward the next level. This makes for some very awkward timing, though, because I’ve actually been considering selling the business to focus more on family in hopes to alleviate some of the problems we’ve been having with Nick. I will be meeting with four different potential buyers this week.

As all of this is happening, I have also been contacted by a local principal to who I’d sent my resume a while back. She wants to interview me for a position that will become available next month when a teacher goes on leave. I’d love to go back into the classroom, but this is awfully short notice and the whole point of selling the toy library is to spend more time with my family, but I guess it won’t hurt to meet with her. It’s very difficult to get a teaching job in Pennsylvania, so I would hate to throw away an opportunity if it involves benefits and a retirement plan-two things being a small business owner currently does not have going for it.

Also, I have submitted my resume to the online university where my father is an executive officer. I do have the necessary qualifications to teach for them and I hear they are looking to expand their staff. I’m not holding my breath for that one because of their anti-nepotism policy, but being able to work from home, bring in a set income, and have benefits, would be amazing!

So, do I stay in and work with the investor myself, get out while the getting’s good, go back to teaching in the classroom, stay at home with the kids, or try to teach online? That’s the question of the hour, which I guess will be decided by whether anyone actually buys it or not.

In addition, we are continuing the kitchen remodel, now in its 6th month, and have about 2/3 of a floor thanks to my wonderful in-laws putting in a 10-hour workday at our house and the fact that Eddie was willing to stay up until 1am working on it.

One day things will calm down a little, perhaps, but certainly not this month!

These Boobs Are Nothing But Trouble

March 2, 2010 By: Stephanie1 Comment

So, first off, let me just say that I’m sorry that the last few posts have been pretty negative, but this one isn’t going to be much different. On the up side, there has been a lot more traffic at the toy library lately and I still have the best husband ever, who has gotten even more amazing after watching the movie Fireproof the other day. And my kids are pretty awesome too, so for those things I am very grateful.

However, today totally sucked! First, let me back up an entire year to when I was about 8 months pregnant with Abby. (Warning: if you are a man or squeamish woman you probably want to stop right here.) At that time I found a very small lump in my left breast, like a tiny pebble, that everyone thought was a clogged milk duct. After I delivered her it went away. Fine.

Fine, that is, until a few weeks ago when I started getting this weird dull achy pain in the same spot where the lump had been. Then the pain started radiating down my shoulder and upper arm and there was a little bit of (WARNING again) milky discharge. Also, since the delivery that breast has been significantly larger than the other. Finally, I got worried and made an appointment with the doctor. Today was the day of the appointment.

Luckily, my mom is on her spring break so she was able to stay with the kids while I went to the doctor. (By now you’ve probably ascertained that this did not go so well.) She could feel dense tissue and “something palpable” in the area I was talking about as well as one other area. She also told me I need to lose 20-30 pounds to get back to my pre-baby weight. She said I’m no longer allowed to eat bread, rice, pasta, corn, potatoes, or peas. Or caffeine! OR CHOCOLATE! Also I have to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. She told me she was sending me for an ultrasound and possible mammogram, which might need to be followed up with a consultation with a beast surgeon. She also gave me a prescription for vitamin E and a slip for blood work. Oh, and I had a pap smear, which as you know (since by now supposedly no men or squeamish women are reading this) is not the most pleasant thing in the world.

So I had to call Eddie and tell him to take the afternoon off to stay with the kids. Kirsten took over at the toy library and my mom went with me to the women’s imaging center. I have to say everyone on staff at Apple Hill was amazing. They were very warm, friendly, and positive. A young ultrasound tech named Autumn took the images and warned me they’d probably need to do a mammogram, which they did. (How many people can I get naked in front of in one day?) Then we had to go wait again so I could have several vials of blood drawn. I should probably mention at some point that this is all highly unusual because I’m only 25.

Well, thankfully, neither the ultrasound or mammogram showed any signs of cancer. However, because there is that “something palpable” hiding in there somewhere-Autumn could feel it too-I most likely do have to have a consult with the surgeon. Meanwhile, I’ll be here at work by myself for at least another three hours. Fun times.

So, to sum up, today I have had a pap smear, breast exam, ultrasound, mammogram, blood work, been told to get back into my size 4 pants, and do that by not eating virtually anything, especially CHOCOLATE, and now I’m at work until 8pm. Oh, and there could very well be a surgery in the near future. I think it’s fair to say, “March 2, 2010, I don’t like you very much.”

Patience

February 16, 2010 By: Stephaniecomment

“Patience is a virtue known by few women and no men.”-Anonymous.

I used to be one of those women, honest. I used to have a seemingly endless supply of patience for children. I spent years as a nanny, an elementary school teacher, and even a mother without irrationally losing my temper, yelling, or saying things I shouldn’t. I am an adult, after all.

Being Patient with a Second Child

My patience is gone now. It vanished into thin air, I swear it really did. What happened? I think I met my match in the only person I’ve ever met who has ever been able to match me in terms of willpower and determination: my daughter.

As a baby Nicholas easily complied as I decided when and where he would eat, sleep, bathe, or just about anything else. He was always pleasant and genuinely wanted to please. Sure, he had his moments in the form of a temper tantrum here or there, but I never had a lack of patience for him. Never a knot in my stomach accompanied by a feeling of “there’s just no way in hell I can do this for YEARS to come.”

Raising one child came so easily, in fact, that we decided to have another one right away so that they would be close in age. Yup, I consciously brought this on myself.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Abby is incredibly sweet and very lovable, the picture-perfect blond, blue-eyed baby American Dreams are made of. She’s also as stubborn as a mule. Has been from day one.

I didn’t want to give her a pacifier, but we had to because there was just no satisfying her sucking reflex otherwise.

I wanted her to sleep in her bassinet, for 4 months the only way she would sleep was sitting upright in her swing.

I wanted to schedule her feedings, she refused to eat unless it was on her terms.

I wanted to schedule naps, she flat out refused to take them. (Have you ever met an infant who can stay awake for 15 hours straight, I have one.) Unless of course, she was being held- only upright and only if the person who was holding her was standing up and rocking side to side NOT back and forth- in that case, she might cat nap for about 10 minutes.

When she decided she finally wanted to sleep laying down I wanted to sleep train her as we did with her brother. Just like Super Nanny says, let her cry for a few minutes, go in with no eye contact or talking to soothe her, then leave. Repeat until she falls asleep. Yeah, good luck with that. This baby does not cry herself to sleep. She stays up crying until 6 am, keeping an entire family awake in the process. That’s not fair to Nicholas. That’s how she wound up in our bed.

So now I have one child who never had a pacifier, always sleeps in his own bed, eats his meals at regularly scheduled times, and at almost 3 still naps about 80% of the time when I tell him to, and one child who insists on having a pacifier, sleeping in our bed, eating when she wants and refuses to nap.

I need to get my patience back so I can straighten her out now because if this keeps up little miss Abby is going to turn into one teenager that I am NOT going to want to deal with!

In the process of appeasing my 9-month-old self-proclaimed princess I have also lost all patience for things like kitchen renovations that take over 5 months, garage door openers that do not work, whining, insurance companies, dishes, laundry, my house being disorganized (back when I had patience I was also a queen of organization. Now, not so much.) and weight loss.

I am trying to stay positive and focus on the fact that I have a beautiful, healthy family, which includes an incredibly supportive husband (who did take me on that trip to Lancaster last weekend, which was awesome) and a business that, while it is currently in the incredibly stressful and financially draining start-up phase, does have a lot of potential.

Frankly, I’m surprised I had the patience to write this much with one child whining because he doesn’t like the way the magnets make the toy trains stick together and one child pulling my hair and hitting the keyboard. Serenity now…
