Hanging Out With The Mom of the Year, Vlogging About BlogU

March 18, 2014 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Yesterday Meredith from Mom of the Year was at my house and we were busy little bees. We hired two very capable young ladies to watch our children and we shut ourselves in my home office for five hours working on all of the big plans we have for the upcoming BlogU Conference.

I hope you are coming, because it is going to be AMAZING.

We made a video all about it. If you want to learn more about the conference, or if you just want to hear why my hair looks so ridiculously greasy, check it out:

We also recorded a radio show to answer some of the additional questions that have popped up in the Facebook group. You can listen to the podcast here:

Discover Blogs Internet Radio with The Blog University on BlogTalkRadio

The course descriptions for BlogU are now up on our website. I hope you’ll check them out. It really is going to be a great time and we are going to learn so much from each other!

I hope I see you there in June!

Seven!

March 16, 2014 By: Stephanie2 Comments

birthday smile

There’s the birthday boy!

Today Nicholas turned 7. I think that officially makes me the mom of a big kid.

He took Spiderman cupcakes to his class on Friday and we went to Chuck E. Cheese and Cracker Barrel over the weekend and Nana and Gramps came to visit. He got to go to Target today and spend some of his birthday money on a new Lego airplane.

He also got a new mohawk haircut, which he loves. I dig it too. It matches his personality. Now his insides are on the outside.

It’s been a wild ride, that’s for sure. But we wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Almost six years ago we got an email from our social worker with pictures of a much smaller version of this face. We’re so glad we decided to take the leap of faith and bring him home.

Get Skinny Saturday: Week 11

March 15, 2014 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Wow, Get Skinny Saturday really snuck up on me! I actually forgot all about weighing in until 5 minutes ago.

get skinny saturday

This week I think I did a little bit better. We didn’t eat out as much, I made a few more meals from scratch, and the kids and I weren’t nearly as busy as last week.

Although, I still did not manage to find time to work in a regular exercise routine. Eddie had a few late nights for work, which doesn’t help. [Read more…]

Gardening with kids: sowing seeds indoors

March 13, 2014 By: Stephanie7 Comments

indoor seed planting

Gardening with kids can be a little bit intimidating (and messy!) but it is so worth it to grow food with them. It is still too cold in Pennsylvania to plant our seeds in the ground, so this week we starting our garden by plating some seeds indoors.  [Read more…]

Preparing for your spring garden with a garden notebook

March 10, 2014 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Starting a garden notebook

I love having a vegetable garden, but it is not something that comes naturally to me. For the first few years of our marriage I attempted to grow gardens and the most I ever yielded was five berries.

Eventually I got smarter and started putting in some research before I just dug a hole in the ground and stuck some seeds in it and the vegetables actually grew. 🙂

This year I bought some heirloom seeds, which I’ve never tried to grow before, so it will be another learning year for me, but I am excited to utilize our new property!

One of the biggest difference makers for me in finally achieving success with our garden, was to start keeping a garden notebook. I keep track of what I want to plant and when, what needs to be started indoors, and what can go directly into the ground, which zone we are in (we are actually between two zones), and what the last frost date is. That sounds like a lot, but it all fits on one page.

garden notebook

A Garden Notebook Should Include:

  • The last frost date for your area
  • A list of all the seeds or plants you want to plant this year and dates for when to plant each
  • Identify which seeds need to be started indoors
  • A shadow map of your house so that you know what areas of your yard get the most sun throughout the day

I like to draw a shadow map whenever we move into a new house. That lets me see where shadow are throughout the day so that I can figure out the best place to plant the gardens for them to get optimal sunlight. I just draw a very quick sketch of the house several times throughout the course of a day and shade in where the shadows are.

I tried to start this morning, but it is a cloudy day, so there really aren’t any noticeable shadows.

Here’s an example of what a very simple one might look like.  I try to have at least one example from the morning, mid-day, and afternoon. (The rectangle would represent your house.)

We were very busy over the weekend, so I haven’t gotten around to starting our indoor seeds. I’m planning to get to that within the next day or two.

This will also be our first year starting seeds indoors. I’m expecting a steep learning curve!

Get Skinny Saturday: Week 10

March 8, 2014 By: Stephaniecomment

I’m baaaack.

get skinny saturday

It’s time for Get Skinny Saturday.

Which maybe I should start calling, “weigh-in every week even though you haven’t really been doing anything to work towards your weight loss Saturday,” but that doesn’t have quite as nice of a ring to it.

This week I did pretty much nothing in terms of the weight loss. [Read more…]

Is It really “green” to pee in the shower? Scientific answers from a civil engineer.

March 7, 2014 By: Stephanie14 Comments

Is it safe to pee in the shower

I’d like you to meet Eddie Giese, P.E. He’s a graduate of the University of Maryland’s school of engineering, a licensed professional engineer, and a project manager. He spent several weeks over the summer of 2013 designing and constructing a water tank for a remote village in Burkina Faso, which is located in west Africa. He knows a thing or two about water systems and how they work.

He’s also my husband, so today I’m interviewing him here on the blog. I’m seeking answers to one of life’s more pressing questions:

Should people pee in the shower? Read on to find out. [Read more…]

Confession: I Had Gum Disease

March 6, 2014 By: Stephanie3 Comments

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Waterpik.
using a waterpik

Everybody knows all about the fun stuff like stretch marks and hemorrhoids that happen to your body while you are pregnant, but nobody tell you about the dark underbelly (pun totally intended) of secret and shameful things that can happen to you afterwards.

Ever heard of a PUPPP rash? Me neither, until I got one immediately after delivering Penny. Imagine getting the chicken pox on top of a horrible sunburn, while you are also recovering from major surgery. It was not fun.

I also had NO IDEA that pregnancy so often leads to gum disease.

That is, until I was sitting in the dentist’s chair minding my own business right after I delivered Abby. I was just there for a normal cleaning. I didn’t think much of it. I always brush and floss my teeth. I hadn’t even had a cavity in almost five years.

When they told me I had Periodontitis (which means that you are passed the stage of gingivitis and have a full on disease in your mouth) I FREAKED out. [Read more…]

The Walking Dead Zombie Oscars, or as I like to call them, the “Zoscars”

March 3, 2014 By: Stephanie3 Comments

the zombie oscars

I did not watch 90% of the Oscar broadcast last night because I had better things to do. There were zombies to be killed over on The Walking Dead. It was an entire episode about Daryl! Who freakin cares about the Oscars?

So, I thought it would be fun today to do my own Walking Dead Zombie Oscars.

First, there would be a red (because, you know, blood) carpet show with my boyfriend Chris Hardwick, the host of Talking Dead.

Then, the awards go to…

Lifetime Achievement

Hershel. We miss you, man. You were good people. [Read more…]

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
