Thinking About Becoming A Foster or Adoptive Parent?

October 26, 2018 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Foster and adoptive parents have lots of questions. We've got some answers

It’s been eleven years since the first time Eddie and I sat in a training. We lived in Florida at the time and were working on getting licensed to adopt a child out of the foster care system. The following year we were matched with Nicholas. He was our first child, so parenting a child who has been through trauma is the first thing we learned. Trauma and attachment-focused parenting is our baseline.

We do also have two biological children who came along later. I can tell you unequivocally that the love is no different. But, just like when raising any children who have different personalities and needs, sometimes the parenting styles have to be tailored uniquely for each child. I never sugarcoat the fact that parenting children who have been through trauma is hard work. It is also very necessary work. If you’ve been here a while, you know some of our story. I like to say that I might have carried my daughters, but I labored the hardest for my son.

Recently,  we were licensed again to be foster/adoptive parents in Pennsylvania. We currently have five kids in our care. One is adopted, two are biological, and two are foster children we are hoping to adopt.

When people find out that we’ve been doing this for a while and we’re choosing to do it again, they have a lot of questions. Often those questions are coming from people who have considered fostering or adopting themselves.

I tried my best to put most of those questions and answers here in this post. If you have any further questions, it’s a good idea to call a local adoption agency. Every state has slightly different requirements. Someone local to you will be able to guide you through your specific situation much better than I can. I am not a social worker or an attorney, so this post is not intended as legal or professional advice. I’m just a mom with a little bit of experience who can share what I’ve learned with you.

DIY Barn Wedding with Sunflowers

October 19, 2018 By: Stephanie5 Comments

How to throw your dream sunflower themed barn wedding on a budgetMy beautiful sister, Charlotte, got married last weekend. We are so excited to welcome her new husband, Chris, into our family! And I’m also excited to share these photos with you.

DIY barn wedding

Due to some extenuating circumstances, we had to change the location and plan the entire wedding in about eight weeks on a strict budget. We made almost all of the decor ourselves with inspiration from around the web. I think it turned out fabulously!

The ceremony and reception were both held in The Barn at Grimmel Farms in Jerretsville, Maryland. It is by far the most gorgeous barn venue I’ve ever seen. Charlotte had such cool ideas for personal touches, and we were able to give her the sunflower-themed barn wedding of her dreams.

Check it out.

How You Can Help Foster Families

September 21, 2018 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Looking for ways to volunteer with kids_ Here are 15 ways to help your local foster families

We know not everyone is called to be a foster family or in the right season of their life to be a parent themselves. But one thing we hear constantly is, “I would love to help, but I just don’t know how.” I get it, it is very overwhelming. No one wants to step on any toes or be in the way, and the world of fostering is unique. Every single situation is different.

There might be foster parents in your life who you’ve already reached out to and let them know you care. That’s great! Maybe you even said something along the lines of “just let us know what you need.” You even really, truly meant it. But they probably did not reach out, partially because they are very overwhelmed and literally did not have time, and partially because their needs are ever-changing.

This post is for them as much as it is for you. I want to give them a resource they can pass along to their friends, family, or church when people ask, “What can we do?” And I want everyone to know that you can help with out breaking the bank.

Here are a few ways anyone can offer help and encouragement to foster families:  [Read more…]

Where to Find a Great Family Vacation Spot in Lancaster, PA

July 31, 2018 By: Stephanie1 Comment

This has been our best family vacation summer yet! We spent last weekend without tv, without tablets, and without anything else that started with a lowercase i in front of it (except my phone because I was using it as a camera to capture our memories). Remember when I told you about the Encore resort where we stayed in Florida? The same company reached out to our family and told us about another resort they have just 45 minutes from our house! This time we had the chance to stay in a the charming Country House at the Spring Gulch resort in New Holland, which is in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country in Lancaster area. So, of course I jumped at the chance to see this awesome vacation spot so close to home. Thank you to Encore for working with me once again!

Spring Gulch is a family vacation resort in the Lancaster, PA area. #ad #PetiteRetreats

Spring Gulch is a family resort that offers spots for camping in tents or RVs, cabin or chalet rentals, and a few rental homes as well. We were taking five kids and a few adults along with us, so we decided to stay in the Country House. It was a perfect choice for our family. This is a four-bedroom house that sleeps up to 12. There were 2 single beds and 5 double beds throughout the house. It also had two bathrooms, a living room, and a full kitchen.  [Read more…]

How to Prepare Foster or Adopted Children for Vacation

July 17, 2018 By: Stephanie4 Comments

I would like to thank Dutch Wonderland for inviting our family to their kid-friendly amusement and water park in Lancaster, PA this summer. We had an amazing time!

Vacation tips for foster and adoptive families. Learn how to make your trip easier on your kids.I love Dutch Wonderland because of its manageable size, family-friendly environment, and because they really do have something there that EVERY member of the family can enjoy. (My personal favorite is the diving shows.) Plus, can we talk about all the shade trees all around the property? That alone makes such a difference when you are outside in 90+ degree weather in July.  And I love that the water park area, Duke’s Lagoon, is included in the cost of your ticket.

I think Penny might have been a little excited about the merry-go-round.

Dutch Wonderland merry go round

But there was plenty to do for everyone else as well.

Obviously, I highly recommend Dutch Wonderland. But getting ready to go on a family vacation, whether it is for a whole week or even for just one day, as a foster family does present some unique challenges. Today I want to share a few tips that worked for us on our visit to Dutch Wonderland and some things I wish we would have thought to do in advance. Some of these tips are specific to foster families, but many of them apply to biological families as well.  [Read more…]

How to Organize Your Pantry in a Day

July 16, 2018 By: Stephaniecomment

How to organize your pantry in one day

I love our large pantry, I really do. But if you are anything like me, then every time you try to organize your pantry it is a pretty spectacular failure. Not this time, though. I think I finally got it right. And just so you know, I am not exaggerating. The pantry was HORRIBLE. Eight people are currently living in our house. And this is what the pantry looked like.

How to Install a DIY Brick Backsplash

July 13, 2018 By: Stephanie6 Comments

how to install a do it yourself brick backsplash in your kitchen

I can’t wait to tell you about our custom brick backsplash. If you have seen my previous posts about our IKEA kitchen, you know it took us a while to get around to finishing the final touches, like the custom range hood and of course this backsplash. Today I’m going to show you how we installed our DIY brick backsplash ourselves. We were pleasantly surprised that the process was much less intimidating than we expected!  [Read more…]

Where to eat in Magic Kingdom if you have food allergies or sensitivities

July 12, 2018 By: Stephaniecomment

Looking for a place to eat in Magic Kingdom?

I told you all about the trip we took to Disney World last month and how they were so great at accommodating Nicholas’ special needs. What I haven’t told you yet is how easy it was to find food for me to eat in Magic Kingdom while we were there. If you have food allergies or sensitivities, then you understand how big of a deal that can be! But don’t worry, even if you are eating at the casual dining areas without making reservations, you will be able to find something that works. Today I want to talk to you all about where to eat in Disney World if you have food allergies or restrictions.

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
