Get ‘Er Done Week

March 30, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Cheri is having “Ger ‘er done” week over on her blog and encouraging moms to get stuff done around their house that they’ve been putting off for a while.
Well, my house still looks like a pig stye (even though we’ve cleaned it 3 times since Saturday) but we did get some things done this week.

Most importantly…

  • Throw the kids’ party and also…
  • Clean the baseboards, steps, and landing in the foyer
  • Sort through hand me down bins and buy spring/summer clothes for the kids
  • Meet with a different construction company for a comparison quote on the house
  • Use coupons that have been cluttering the kitchen to score 2 packs of free crayons at Target
  • Buy 3 composition books and start a “letters from mommy” book for each child
  • Take Penny’s 3 month photo
  • Put the Easter eggs together for the preschool egg hunt
  • Schedule a date night (We went to see Hunger Games on Tuesday)
  • Enter all the recipes into the computer for the Mom N Me cookbook
  • We bought a riding mower so Eddie can start cutting the grass at out land. (and then we went back again 4 days later for a price adjustment because they starting giving away a free cart and free delivery for buying that mower)
  • Sort the mountain of clean laundry that has taken over our master bedroom (but now it’s back again, the monster cannot be tamed)
  • Make some more calls about finally getting the tax clearances for the business I closed 2 years ago.
  • Work one night this week (I’m trying to stay on the schedule teaching parenting classes at least 1 night a week now to contribute a little bit more to our finances, next week I’ll start 2 nights a week for the month of April.)
  • Prepare & give a speech on discipline for our Mom N Me group
  • Do ALL of the dishes. (I think that is actually the first time I’ve been caught up since Penny was born. I started washing stuff by hand if it didn’t fit in the dish washer instead of leaving it for the next load.) I even washed 2 of my vases and the cup we use to shampoo little heads in the bathtub.
  • Find Easter outfits
  • Get my brother’s birthday gift (My baby brother is turning 16!)
  • Get back in my pre-baby jeans (Although I still have a lovely little stretch-marked muffin top. Sigh. This body has had two children, this body has had 2 children, say it with me…)
  • Plus we planted a little container garden for each of the older kids with the radish & lettuce seeds my Aunt Chotts sent for the first day of spring. Even though that was technically last week, I’m still counting it because we’ve been caring for them and watching them sprout.

Looking at it in a long list like that feels pretty good. I guess I got more done than I thought.

This week I’m hoping to:

  • Dig out the Easter decorations and buy stuff for baskets
  • Get the windows washed (I’m really not sure why I bother),
  • Take a bunch of maternity clothes to a friend
  • Give the dog a bath
  • Get some more storage bins and tame our master closet and/or my sewing stuff

I’m trying to keep the goals down to 5, so I can do one each week day, but my MIL is coming on Wednesday to stay with us for a few days, so I hope maybe I can do some major de-cluttering while she’s here to keep an eye on the baby. Maybe list some stuff on Craigslist for my Disney fund (I’m trying to come up with $3,000 over the next year and a half so we can take a Disney vacation without touching any of Eddie’s salary.)

Also maybe sleep. I’ve only had 1 actual night of sleep in the past few months and that was only because I was doing a treatment for PUPPP (It’s gross, don’t Google it. Or maybe do, but only if you are close to your last trimester, just in case) so it wasn’t exactly pleasant. I’m so grateful to be able to breastfeed this time around, but I sooooo miss being able to take turns with a bottle fed baby at night.

Sorry for my rambling, mostly this is just a giant note to myself, but thanks for reading anyway.

What is on the list f things you have been meaning to get done?

Lead Us Not into Temp-Tations

March 21, 2012 By: Stephanie7 Comments

So…normally (with the exception of children’s books and board games) I am like the opposite of a hoarder. I’m a purger. I like to giveaway tons of clothes several times a year, have yard sales, throw old junk away, etc.

But I do have one collection that’s getting slightly out of hand, and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. I love them. They are amazing. They are the best dishes ever.

Yes. I’m obsessed with dishes.

It’s a product sold on QVC (I’m not a huge QVC shopper, except for this brand and 2 Cottage Farms plants) called Temp-Tations. It’s affordable, hand painted stoneware that’s oven safe to 500 degrees & freezer, microwave, and dishwasher safe. Plus pretty much all of the bakeware comes with baskets, glass trivets, and plastic storage lids. I am in no way being compensated for this post (although I wouldn’t mind a few free pieces if you’d care to send them, Tara.)

I ordered a few new products the other day and Eddie was like “How much of that stuff do you already have?” Ummm…crickets. I have no idea. So I decided to take inventory.

Wanna see? So far I have all of the following. I mostly collect the black, but now I love the brand new cream color, so….. I also have some yellow & confetti pieces & one magnolia & some heritage. I’ve only ever had to return one piece because it arrived broken, but it was replaced right away.

All of these images are from qvc, some of the products are retired so you can’t get them anymore sorry.

Here we go…

I have this set in black

And this set in black
and this guy in yellow (to which Eddie may or may not have come home and said something along the lines of, “Did you really just pay money for a huge c**k and then expose it to the children?” Sometimes we revert back to 12-year-olds.) PS. Even though I’m not that into the rooster motif, this piece is a really good size and it’s less than 20 bucks right now, so it’s a great item to test run.
and I have these guys in black
and this in confetti

and two of these, one black and one yellow
and this guy in black
and these
and these in black (from the PA outlet, woot woot)

this tray in green (one of my all time favorites.)
and I just ordered this in the new cream color
and I have this in black, which I LOVE (sorry it’s retired)
and these guys in blue. They remind me of my mommom because she used to always give a bluebird of happiness as a housewarming gift.
This lovely lady in yellow holds my utensils next to my stove. She’s retired too, sorry.

and I have these in yellow, also retired.
and these in confetti. I think they might be retired too.
and these bowls in a pattern I think is called heritage.
And 2 sets of this dinnerware in black.
and last but not least, I have this set (probably the one I cook in most often) in confetti.

I love them. I chipped my pitcher the other day, completely my fault, and I almost cried. We’ve been using the dinnerware as our everyday dishes for about a year and a half and so far (knock on wood) not a single one has chipped or cracked and I’ve accidentally dropped them a couple times. I’ve also replaced all of my glass baking dishes with these and nothing has ever stuck. Not one thing. Ever. You really can just clean them with a damp paper towel.

I literally mix batter or whatever I’m making for dinner right in the 9×13, bake in it, serve in it, then put the lid on (almost all of the bakeware comes with plastic lids, unless they are already covered dishes) and put it in the fridge, then it can go straight in the dishwasher. I’m totally spoiled and now it annoys me if I have more than one dish to wash from preparing dinner.

Ok, I’ll shut up now. But there, now I know how much I have. I have the bluebirds on display as more of a sentimental piece, and I’ve only used the mini oval bakers a few times, but other than that, I use all of the other stuff on a daily basis.

I highly recommend it.

And if you’d care to buy me some more I’d be ok with that too. In the new cream color, please.

How To Entertain Kids For An Entire Day Without Technology or Toys

March 19, 2012 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Great ideas for games and activities you can do with kids!

Nick and Abby’s birthdays are only 6 weeks apart. I am not one for huge birthday parties for kids. We usually just invite our parents and siblings over for lunch and some cake in a combined birthday party, but my kids are lucky enough to have 7 living grandparents, 2 uncles, an aunt, and a special surrogate aunt. That’s 11 people bringing presents, plus mom and dad. That’s 25 new toys coming in to my house in one day and some people bring more than one gift. We appreciate all of the great new toys, but it can get a little overwhelming thinking about where to put them all.

I started thinking about what we would play with when we were little and there were very few toys I actually remembered. Some Magic Nursery Dolls, Polly Pockets and Barbies. I know the importance of toys, I used to own a toy library, but what I remember the most is playing all day at my Mommom’s house when she would babysit us and most of the time we never took out a single toy. She would play these games with us all day long.

If you find yourself unexpectedly babysitting young kids or if you just want your family to just unplug from all of the stuff for a minute, try a few of these ideas.

Stone School:
Sit on the bottom step of a flight of stairs (kindergarten) and hide a small rock in one hand. Hide your hands behind your back. Have the other person guess which hand the rock is in. If they guess correctly, you move up to the next grade level (the next step). The object is to “graduate” to the top step.

Stage:
Everyone sits on the couch and you take turns getting up one at a time and preforming a song of your choice.

Hide and Seek:
Pretty sure you already know how to play this, but just in case, everyone hides and one person tries to find them. Just be careful your kids aren’t as good at this game as mine are!

Punchanello:
Similar to follow the leader. One person does something silly while the others sing “What can you do, Punchanello, funny fellow? What can you do Punchanello, funny you?” Then everyone else copies the first person and sings “We can do that too, Punchanello, funny fellow. We can do that too, Punchanello, funny you.”

Follow the Leader
Same as above, without the silly song.

Hot Butter Beans
No one knows why we called it that, but in this game one person hides an object. We used the red top from the plastic stacking rings but it could be anything: a rock, a shoe, whatever. The others are in another room while it is being hid. Once it is hidden, the hider shouts “Hot butter beans, come to supper!!!!” and everyone look for the object. The hider says whether the lookers are “hot” (close) or “cold” (far away) until they find it.

Simon Says
Pretty sure you already know about this one too.

Store
Mommom would take real food, cereal boxes or whatever, out of the pantry and line it up along the fireplace and we would take turns shopping being the cashier putting it into plastic bags, etc.

Tea Party
In our house this means spreading out a towel on the kitchen floor and giving the kids a big bowl of water and some kitchen utensils to play with

Build a Fort
My dad used to make a mean fort out of the kitchen chairs and a few blankets.

Paint
Funny enough, when my kids paint we rarely actually use paint. We like to use a q-tip to draw with water & food coloring. You can also spread shaving cream on the table or sidewalk and let them fingerprint in that. In the summer my kids like to make “disappearing ink” drawings on the sidewalk (which are really just painted with plain ol’ water).

Scavenger Hunt
My Aunt Chotts always has a scavenger hunt ready for kids to do as the first part of their visit to her home.

Silly Songs
My Mommom’s favorite was “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”

If the weather is nice, take a walk, go to the park, play tag.

Sock War
Pretty much, you just throw balled up (preferably clean) socks at each other

I Spy
Lately this is Abby’s absolute favorite. One person says “I spy with my little eye something…red(or whatever color)” and the rest take turns guessing until they figure it out.

20 Questions
We always played this in the car. One person thinks of something then the others take turns asking yes or no questions and see if they can guess what it is before they’ve asked 20 questions.

Flashlight Tag

In the evening we will sometimes go out in the yard and hand each kid a flashlight from the dollar store. Then they play a regular game of tag, but with flashlights.

Design Your Own Board Game

Then play it. My cousin Sally and I loved to do this when we stayed with my grandmother for a week each summer. We would always design a trap where you would get stuck if you happened to land on a certain space. (For example, that space might say “Move ahead 4 spaces,” but in 4 spaces it would say “Move back 4 spaces” and you would be stuck moving back and forth. We thought this was hilarious.)

Create a Neighborhood Newspaper.

Walk around with the kids and interview a few of your neighbors who are outside and you know are friendly. Have the kids write stories like “Mr. Jackson is Planting His Tomatoes Early This Year!” and draw pictures to go with them. Then make copies and distribute them to the neighbors you interviewed.

Get a Disposable Camera and Let the Kids Take a Photo Walk

Put the pictures in an album from the dollar store.

Sidewalk Chalk

Is great for drawing pictures or for making your own hopscotch or four square court (although you would need a ball to play four square).

There are a lot more things you can do that don’t require any toys. I’d love to hear some of your favorites in the comments!

Nicholas is Five

March 16, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Nicholas, you are turning five today! We’ve been blessed to have you in our family for almost 4 of those years. Today we are taking mint chocolate Oreo pops to preschool and today Daddy stayed a little late to have breakfast with you and give you your present, a pair of roller skates. Right away you handed one to your little sister and now you and Abby are scooting around the kitchen, each with a roller skate on one foot. You like to share anything except your trains and airplanes.

You love airplanes. A LOT.

You also love to eat. Sometimes you have 3 different breakfasts. You need all that food to fuel you because you never stop moving. Sometimes you start doing spontaneous somersaults. Sometimes they are in the hall at church on Sunday when hundreds of people are trying to walk.

Your favorite foods are scrambled eggs, sloppy joes, and meatball subs.

You like to cheer people up, and you always do. Well, almost always. 😉

You love to talk. To everyone. All the time.

You have so much charisma that I can’t count how many strangers have said the first time they meet you, “That’s some boy you have there. I bet one day he’s going to be the mayor.” Sometimes they say President. Sometimes they say a pastor. Always a leader.

You love sports. Especially golf. (Who knows why) It rarely discourages you that you can be clumsy or if you aren’t the best on a team. You just love to play.

Sometimes (often) you test us. Especially mommy. We’re working on it. We’re also working on the potty, colors, letters, and thinking before you act.

You remember an amazing amount of the lines you see in movies. You can still quote a movie six months after you see it.

Everyone who knows you loves you, and you seem to know everyone. People I don’t know come up to me all the time and say, “Oh, you’re Nicholas’ mom. We just LOVE Nicholas!” No matter where we are, church, the mall, Panera Bread, it’s always…

“He is so funny.”

“He has such a genuine love of life.”

“He is a joy to be around.”

Or your teachers

“He was struggling today, but he tries SO hard.”

“He didn’t want to do the work, but he is just so funny it’s hard to get upset with him.”

When I make appointments for your sisters at the doctor’s office, the staff always ask if I can please bring you too.

Friends always ask if Nick has said anything funny lately, and there is always a new story.

Maybe one day you will be a pastor or the mayor or the President. Or a pilot. Or a stand-up comic. As long as you are a stand-up citizen, I really don’t care.

Until then, it will be fun to watch you grow into the man you will become.

You Won’t Be the Mom You Thought You’d Be

March 15, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

I was the first of my close friends to become a mom and now several of them have started to join me in this stage of life. While I have just added my third, they are on baby number one or two and lately, a few friends have come to me and said things like “How are you doing this? Why does it look so easy for you, but I feel like I’m drowning with just one?”

So I share my secret with them: Three is much easier than one. The first is hard, the second is harder (there’s no such thing as “sleep when the baby sleeps” when there is also a toddler) but according to my limited experience and everyone I’ve talked to so far with more than two, it gets much easier after that.

The work doesn’t get easier. You just learn how to function without a full night of sleep. The housework can wait until the weekend, but the windows probably won’t get washed again, like, ever. Most importantly, you’ve learned who you are as a mom and you can stop battling with your previous expectations.

You’ve heard the expression “I was a better mom before I had kids.” Well actually, I think I was just a different mom before I had kids. There are some things I thought would be non-negotiable that I no longer care about at all, and there are some things that I never imagined I’d do that wound up coming very naturally. And sometimes I contradict myself and it’s ok.

When we first met Nicholas it was in a McDonald’s. He was 13 months old and his foster mom was letting him chew on a french fry. Later when Eddie and I were talking I was all, “I don’t want our kids eating fast food.” I only bought Morning Star ‘chicken’ nuggets (they’re actually made out of vegetable protein) and I took off the breading before I served them. Now my kids eat tons of french fries because drive thus are easy.

I was always the self-proclaimed worst gardener in the history of the universe and I had NO intention of ever growing food, but now we have our own organic vegetable garden and fruit tree because something has to balance out all those french fries. It never even occurred to me pre-children that it was something we should focus on, but turns out one of the most important things to me in my mission of motherhood is to give my kids a healthy understanding of food, even if they do eat kids meals one or two or maybe three times a week.

I’d never even heard of home canning, but this past year I put up peach slices, peach butter, peach honey, and applesauce.

I fully intended to be using cloth diapers for Abby. I have a whole bunch in her bottom drawer still. As it turns out, cloth diapering totally sucks. (no offense if that is your choice.)

I thought I’d breastfeed Abby but just wasn’t able for medical reasons. I thought I wouldn’t be able to nurse Penny either for those same reasons, but that’s going great. Go figure.

I never intended to make my own baby food, but I did. Because it turns out mashing up a banana or sweet potato with a fork is just as good as using those fancy food mills and it’s cheaper and has no preservatives, unlike those nasty little jars.

I never thought I’d have a child who struggled with reading but I do.

I never thought I’d have a child who is still struggling with the potty at age 5, but I do.

I never thought we’d co-sleep, but we do. On the couch. For almost 3 months now. Because you learn to do what works.

I never, ever, ever thought I would spank a child. Ever. But I have.

I never thought I’d buy clothes for my kids from a thrift store. Done it. (Still can only do clothes new with tags, but still, I’ve done it.)

I thought Kate Gosselin was ridiculous when I saw an interview where she said she didn’t allow her kids to play with markers because of the mess. My kids only own Color Wonder markers.

I thought I’d always be a dog lover. I used to take my dog to doggie daycare because I didn’t want her to be lonely during the day. We bought a second dog to keep her company. Once we had kids my first precious dog went to another family who could give her more attention and I literally wanted to shoot our current dog when all she did was sniff my baby the day we brought her home from the hospital.

I never minded taking kids I babysat to places like Chuck E Cheese. As a parent, I HATE Chuck E Cheese with a passion that burns deep in my soul.

I never thought I’d be a “Bible thumper” but there are times when we are at church 4 days out of the week.

I know it isn’t what you thought it would be. That’s ok. It might not seem like it right now, but eventually, it will be better than you thought it would be.

Like Tuesday morning. I was busy getting the snack together for our Mom N Me group and my kids were playing in the kitchen. Well, Nick was trying to play and Abby was being extremely annoying and constantly taking toys out of his hands. What I thought he would do is smack her, or at the very least come to tattle. What he actually did was ask me, “Mommy, do you know what my verse is this week? Bear with each other and be patient.” (Ephesians 4:2)

Touche, little man.

So, that is my advice to you, brand new moms. When you aren’t the mom you thought you’d be. When you are no longer the same wife you thought you were. When you haven’t yet learned to love your brand new baby the way you thought you would.

Bear with each other and be patient.

It gets easier.

What Is With This Day?

March 5, 2012 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Ever have one of those days that starts out awful and just gets weird?

So this morning all of our kids were up by 6am. Joy.

I got the older two to preschool and took Penny with me to get an oil change.

Turns out our car needed a lot of other stuff too. So that wound up costing $400.

I went to pick up Abby since she gets out of school a while before Nick does, but when I got there the teachers said Nick was really upset. They thought he had a hangnail because he wouldn’t let them get a good look at his finger. It was actually a 2 inch long splinter that was jammed all the way underneath his fingernail, all the way down to the cuticle. Ouch!

Luckily one of the other preschool moms is a nurse and she got it out, but it took me and the preschool director holding him down to get it out. (Thanks again Renee and Michele!)

It was actually kind of cute afterwards because he was really excited to get to wear a bandaid on his finger just like daddy. (Eddie smashed his finger trying to fix our garage door opener last week.)

When it was time to take Nick home I told him he could have anything he wanted for lunch since he had a rough day. He picked Burger King so we went through the drive-thu and brought it home.

Then the dog ate his chicken nuggets and he cried some more. (He still had a few so it wasn’t a complete tragedy.)

In the mean time the baby had a huge diaper blowout.

Then Nick informed me he’d had an accident. The poop kind.

Thankfully, then everyone took a nap for a little while.

After getting changed after nap time because they still wear pull-ups to sleep, neither Nick or Abby wanted to wear pants. I’m way too tired to fight about it. So Nick is running around in toy Story underwear and Abby is wearing a pull-up and a turtleneck. And one sock. It’s a fashion statement.

Then my pantsless children started having a very loud conversation through the window with someone who was apparently standing at our front door.

The loud conversation woke up the baby, so I took a crying baby to the door where a young man, maybe 19 or so, politely said to me, “Hello, ma’am, I was wondering if you’d be interested in my meat today?”

“Um, I’m sorry, what?” (Mostly naked children still hopping up and down and yelling from the top of the steps)

He pointed down the block to a truck he was driving. Apparently he was a meat delivery man and was finished his deliveries and offering to sell me his left-over meat at half price.

I’m sorry, I don’t buy meat from strangers selling it out of the backs of trucks. Especially when the big pitch is that it’s the meat no one else wanted. Did we really wake the baby up for this?

“uh no thanks. I just went to the grocery store yesterday.”

Then I went to the top of the steps and found the dog eating the Lincoln Logs, which were now in a million tiny pieces. Because, really, what I wanted to deal with today was more splinters.

I’m not complaining because I have way too much to be grateful for this week. Like our time with Eddie’s parents who took us all out to lunch yesterday. Our settlement on Friday. The church’s clothing exchange on Saturday where I always find a few nice things for my kids. Being in a position to not have to buy meat out of the back of a truck. Those kinds of things.

But this one?
She goes to the highest bidder.

Building a Dream: Part 2

March 4, 2012 By: Stephanie7 Comments

We are moving along on our house project. I feel so blessed to be married to an engineer during this process, because developing land from scratch is incredibly involved, especially here in Pennsylvania where every county is broken into smaller townships or even smaller boroughs, and every township or borough has different rules and regulations. It saves us a lot of time and money because Eddie is able to draw up our plans for things like the sewer, the water lines, the driveway, etc., and stamp them himself.

Choosing the Lot and Floor Plan

Our sewer plan was finally approved at the board meeting this past week, so we will be able to settle on the lot this coming Friday. After that, we can apply for the necessary permits and once they come through, we are hoping to break ground in May. Well, we are really hoping for April but we’re saying May to be realistic.

The main floor will look like this and there will be an unfinished basement and an unfinished second floor that we can expand into eventually.

We have chosen the Sorrento model from Ritz Craft homes, but we did a complete redesign of the floor plan so that it would work better on our lot with the existing driveway and because I hated the galley kitchen layout in the original plan.

The exterior will look like this:

Image

Our lot is 2.4 acres. I am itching to plant a huuuuuuuuge vegetable garden and several fruit trees, but that’s going to have to wait until next year since this year the house will be under construction, obviously. Do you see that entire wall of pantry space in the kitchen nook? Imagine all of the canning I can do.

It’ll be just like Little House on the Prairie, except with indoor plumbing and no typhoid fever.

Our goal is to be moved in by the start of the school year because Nicholas will be going to kindergarten, which will be so adorable because the school is just across the street (actually a gravel road with only two other houses on it) so I can stand on the porch and watch him walk to school once he’s old enough to go by himself.

I already asked for Cracker Barrel rocking chairs for the front porch as my birthday present. My birthday is in mid-September, so we will probably be moving in just before it.

Hopefully this fall this will be our view from the kitchen window. Imagine the corn field at full height and the trees full of red, orange, and yellow leaves. (The borough owns the corn field our lot backs into. The only plans they have for possible future development are to turn this area into a recreational field for the school. Translation: in theory, this view is protected forever.)

I was actually hoping for a lot that was a bit larger and a little more secluded, but this is a perfect location for us. It will cut down Eddie’s commute to just 15 minutes each way, allow us to still attend the same church and preschool, and put Nick in a school district with all-day kindergarten, which is important for him because he needs the structure and he gets quite a few services through the school system and if they can be done in school it will mean far fewer appointments and headaches for me.

Besides, 2.4 acres is plenty. For perspective, That pink speck is Abby and the black one is Nick standing in the middle of the lot, and the building behind the trees in the middle of the photo is the elementary school. This picture was taken from about where our front porch will be.

I’m excited to share our journey with you and I can’t wait until these pictures include some major construction equipment. Hopefully, we are only 6-8 weeks from that point.

For Rene

February 28, 2012 By: Stephanie11 Comments

This is not a post about craft projects and there are no pictures of my kids. There is an important issue going on here that I don’t feel comfortable ignoring any more. I haven’t seen my perspective represented anywhere & this is the only public forum I have, so I’m going to talk about it for a minute.

I’m a conservative Christian housewife living in Amish country. I’m a registered Republican. I voted for McCain. I’m strongly opposed to abortion, illegal immigration, and I do think homosexuality is a sin. And this is for my college friend Rene. Not my gay friend, just my friend who happens to be gay. And her wife.

I support gay marriage.

Why? Because to me whether or not our country should legalize the union of two people of the same sex is not an issue of morality, it is an issue of civil rights.

Is it sinful? Yeah, actually it is. It’s also sinful if I don’t go to church on a Sunday or if I cuss under my breath when the wrong contestant gets booted from American Idol. But I do that stuff and so do you.

Do I associate with gay people? Umm…do I associate with any people? Of course I do. If we refuse to hang out with people on the basis that we think they are sinners it’s going to be a pretty lonely existence. Newsflash: all people are sinners. Most of us aren’t being denied basic civil liberties because of it.”Last time I checked my watch, it still said America.” -Tim Allen

In our society right now people are outcast for being gay. You know who loved a good outcast? Jesus. You know who liked to persecute people who didn’t share his beliefs? Hitler. I’m not sure about you, but I’d much prefer to embrace the example of the former.

Did God make gay people gay? Yes. He made every human being and every one of us is a sinner. God loves every one of us despite our sinful nature. Hence, God loves gay people. Get over it Westboro Baptist “Church.” And P.S. Nobody is going to make me stop shopping at JC Penny.

Here’s the thing: it’s not the government’s job to regulate personal morality when it comes to issues that aren’t affecting the safety and well-being of others. That’s pretty much a fundamental Republican philosophy so I don’t understand why it doesn’t seem to apply to the gay marriage argument in real life.

In my mind it works like this:

Murder? Sinful + Harmful= Illegal.

Drugs? Sinful + Harmfull = Illegal

Teenagers back talking their parents? Sinful + Not Harmful = Not Illegal

Gay marriage? Sinful + not harmful = _____________

It seems to me the logical answer to the question should be “not illegal.” Actually, it seems to be far more harmful to deny the gay community the advantages of a legal marriage.

My friend Rene and her wife are mothers to one very sweet little girl. They are mothers just like I am. As they have been anxiously awaiting Maryland’s ruling over the legality of their marriage, I’ve been reflecting on the benefits I take for granted as a woman in a traditional marriage.

The life insurance policies I would automatically have access to if something happened to my husband.

The tax deductions we just filed.

The fact that Eddie never had to go through the process of adopting our biological children, despite the fact that we never offered proof that he was their biological father. (Which, I can assure you, there is no question about.) The point is that even if he wasn’t, the hospital just gave him the rights to the children that came out of my body because we are legally married and I said he was the co-parent. When Rene had a baby Lauren had to wait months and pay thousands of dollars to adopt their own child and then go through hell trying to claim the adoption on the taxes.

We also have one adopted child and no one gave us a hard time about filing our adoption claim.

The right to adopt our son from Florida, the state where we were living at the time. I’m not sure about the current policy, but when we adopted Nicholas out of foster care in 2008 it was legal for gay couples in our state to foster children, but not adopt them. Consequently, there are foster children who have been living in loving foster homes for years with gay couples who lose yet another family when they become eligible for adoption and the couple who has been caring for them no longer has the option to do so if the child is to ever find an adoptive family. If the child stayed with the foster family he/she would lose the benefits that came along with being adopted, which at the time in Florida included a free college education.

My grandmother didn’t work, but she lived for years on my grandfather’s pension after she was widowed. What do gay couples do?

I am on my husband’s health insurance plan during these years I am home with my young children. What do gay couples do?

More importantly, what does a person’s sexual orientation have to do with things like health insurance, taxes and pensions?

When did we, collectively, become a society of adults acting like third grade bullies? Effectively, what we are saying is, “You can’t be in our club because you like girls.”

Well, I call bullshit, America.

I am tired of seeing teen suicides all over the news because we are constantly sending our children the message that to be gay is to be less than.

This is our generation’s version of Jim Crow and it is just as ridiculous.

I’m ashamed to say that I almost didn’t post this because I was afraid I’d turn off readers or offend people from my church. Or, alternatively, offend my more liberal friends from college. If I offended you I’m not sorry.

“My generation’s apathy. I’m disgusted with it. I’m disgusted with my own apathy too, for being spineless and not always standing up against racism, sexism and all those other -isms the counterculture has been whining about for years.”
– Kurt Cobain

It is the duty of every citizen according to his best capacities to give validity to his convictions in political affairs.
– Albert Einstein

Building a Dream: Part 1

January 20, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

I was going to wait a few more weeks to share this news, but I’m too excited to wait much longer and things seem to be moving pretty quickly now.

We're under contract on our new home build

We have been waiting for this since October when we found the lot, but we wanted to wait until the start of the new year for a few reasons like the new baby coming and tax purposes, etc.

We’re finally under contract on an amazing piece of property! We were able to negotiate a pretty awesome deal because of the way the market is right now.

It’s almost 2 and a half acres, just 15 minutes from Eddie’s office, and right across the street from the elementary school the kids will attend.

Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be working with a modular home company to create our dream home, which we’ve already picked out and started designing. Our goal is to hopefully be in our new home by September when Nicholas starts kindergarten.

My mom is investing in the property with us and in a few years, the plan is to subdivide a smaller lot on the property and build her a little house right next door so that she can retire near her grandkids.

I’ll be sharing the entire process over the next few months & then I hope you’ll stick around as we work on decorating it! 🙂

Introducing

January 2, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Penelope (Penny) Christine

Born December 30th, 2011 at 11:01am
6 lbs 9.9 oz, 17 and three quarter inches long

Penny was born via c-section, which went very well. She is very small and we had a bit of a scare with a slight heart murmur, but it went away very quickly.

We are still working on nursing, which is going much better than it did when we had Abby, but we haven’t quite mastered it yet.

She is a very sweet baby who seems to like her sleep. Tonight will be our first night home from the hospital, so we are hoping that trend continues!

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
