I’m linking up with Heather again this week. It’s Friday and I’m just saying…
Seeing pictures of your husband playing Indiana Jones and simultaneously helping children in need is hot. Like for real. I can’t stop staring at this picture. But he’s still in Africa for two more weeks. I might spontaneously combust in the meantime. Death by ignited libido.
Burkina Faso 1
Sorry. Where was I? Oh, yeah. I need to change direction for a minute.
I’m just sayin’…
I LOVE technology (what blogger doesn’t?) but there are a few bones I need to pick with the good people who keep giving us all these great “updates.”
Dear DVR People,
I LOVE my DVR. I love fast forwarding through commercials and recording more than one show at a time and pausing live tv. You are awesome. What is not awesome is that you do not come with the ability to save my shows on DVDs. Sure, I can buy an expensive machine to do it, but when I had a VCR I could record shows onto tapes for free without an extra piece of equipment. I want that feature back. Every time we move we lose all of the kids’ favorite tv movies that were saved on the DVR. Not cool.
Dear Online Banking People,
I LOVE online banking. I like that my husband and I can both see our balance at anytime during the day and we can pay bills instantaneously. I do not love that you don’t include a checkbook feature where I can manually enter checks and have them subtracted from our total. That’s a really big oversight on your part. Seriously. Do you know how many times it looks like we have a certain amount in our account, so my husband will splurge on something, not realizing I wrote checks for the school fundraiser and the church and the girl scout cookies and so-and-so’s Pampered Chef party, or vice versa, I’ll do the splurging. The person making the splurge isn’t looking at the checkbook because it’s with the other person who is writing the checks. They try to be responsible and check the balance online before making a big purchase, but the total is deceptive because it doesn’t include the outstanding checks. “Couldn’t he just call you and discuss the splurge?”  you ask. No, not if the thing he is buying is supposed to be a present for me. Yes, we can make a shared Google doc or spreadsheet and put it in Dropbox to keep the balance updated and all of that, but would it really be that hard to just add that feature to your online system? You say we can do ALL of our banking online. That should include updating the checkbook. Please get on that.
Dear CD players,
I don’t like that you won’t let me record songs off the radio anymore. What if I want to record a talk show or if someone I know is giving an interview on NPR? What if I talked to Delila in the middle of the night and requested a song with a special message? I could record that with cassette tapes and make copies to give to friends, but now I can’t. I would like a “record to CD” option on my car stereo. Please and thank you.
Phew. I feel a little better now that I have that off my chest.
Thanks, Heather!

hahaha i love this. it cracks me up that your technology rants involve things that people did with technology in the 90s – taping things VCRs and recording the radio on cassettes. still feeling the 90s after your mall tour post? 🙂 it feels good to get all that out though, right??

What can I say? The 90’s were good to me.

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free. Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
