Date Night and a Special Envelope

September 4, 2011 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Friday was our 5 year wedding anniversary. Yay! (Everyone’s been teasing Eddie this week because he looks about 15 in that picture. He was old enough to drink the champagne, promise.)

We decided to celebrate by going back to the same restaurant where we had our wedding reception. We also decided, at the suggestion of my wonderful mother-in-law (whose birthday is today, so Happy Birthday!) to open the envelope that told us the gender of the new baby.

The last time I was pregnant, we had the ultrasound tech write down the gender and we opened the envelope on Christmas morning. We had been debating about whether or not to be surprised this time, but we decided that this would be a fun way to find out too.

So Friday night we dropped the kids off with Eddie’s parents and headed down to Baltimore’s Pier 5 Hotel for dinner at Ruth’s Chris.

We had to snap a photo on the back deck of my in-laws first, though, because that’s where we take all special occasion pictures. We have a picture of the two of us getting ready to leave for the high school prom right in this spot. 🙂

We were worried there would be a lot of traffic because the Grad Prix race is in Baltimore this weekend, but we lucked out & the roads and the restaurant were practically empty because the race was on other side of the city. The restaurant staff was very sweet and opened the ballroom so I could snap a picture of the room where we had our reception. The room was twice this size on our big day because the dividers on the right were open.

Eddie made me wait until the end of dinner before we opened the envelope. AGH, the suspense! We ordered the calamari appetizer, salads, filet mignon, wine (for him, not me) and they gave us a complementary cheesecake dessert for our special day. 🙂

Then it was finally time to open the envelope!!! It’s a…

GIRL!

I took a video of the envelope-opening process if you’d care to watch:

My Little Piece of Paradise

August 22, 2011 By: Stephanie1 Comment

Actually it’s just outside of Paradise, PA in Lancaster. A 45 minute drive from my house…

AND

Sigh.

I like to make a trip to the PB outlets in Lancaster once a month or so. Because I can. The kids don’t mind going along because the genius engineers behind the parking lot design (my husband’s a roadway engineer so I have an affinity for these people) scattered several gated playgrounds in the midst of the parking area. One of them is directly outside of Pottery Barn.

The Rockvale outlets cover several blocks and there are only two or three playgrounds, so this is a big deal. All the better to bribe my children with.

And on the other side of the playground, just 200 yards or so from PB is a great place to stop for lunch. (Although we never eat there because Eddie’s office is right on our way home, so we go bright and early when the outlets open and meet him for lunch on our drive home.)

But are the prices that good you ask? It depends.

Sometimes the furniture is only discounted 10-20% off retail, but usually you can find one or two deals like this:

A full size headboard marked down 88% to below a hundred bucks. As a matter of fact, that’s the price we paid last year for Nick’s Catalina bed, which is currently “on sale” on the website for 4 times that price. Ours was mega-discounted because it only came with the headboard & foot board, but my in-laws had extra rails, so it was no big deal.

They also had coffee tables on sale this week for $99, and all of the outdoor furniture, which is already discounted because of the end of the season, was an extra 25% off the lowest price.

I found a red corner seat on this trip, like you would find in a sectional sofa, although this one seemed to work fine standing alone, for below $100 too.

Last time I bought this exact mirror, which is selling for $249 right now, for our bathroom remodel. I paid $49. It was $200 off because it was missing one screw. A trip to Lowes and less than $5 fixed that quickly enough.

I wasn’t in dire need of any new furniture, though. What I did snag at a pretty good deal were some Halloween costumes for the kids. They are from last year’s collection, but ask me how much I care. P.S.How is it time to start thinking about Halloween costumes already. Can you believe September starts next week??

We’re going to be the monkey and the mermaid. (That sounds like a weird fairy tale.) I hope Abby doesn’t have a huge growth spurt in the next 10 weeks because hers fits perfectly for now.

Have you seen the regular prices of the Pottery Barn Kids costumes? The cheapest one on the website this year is $54, but they go up to $89. Then you have to pay shipping.

My monkey was $15 and my mermaid was a little bit more of a splurge at $25. PB Kids always has a great resale value on ebay & Craigslist, so if we choose to resell these costumes next year, I know I will get my money back & then some. Both of these costumes are listed on ebay right now for over $50 each. (I’m pretty sure the seller just hit up the same sale I did. Maybe I should consider doing some outlet shopping, then turning a quick profit on ebay.hmmm…)

Apparently there are only a few of these outlets scattered around the country, but it might just be worth it to grab a friend, rent a U Haul, and take a day trip to the closest one you can find. 🙂

Deal of The Week

August 18, 2011 By: Stephanie4 Comments

I highly suggest heading to Kohl’s right now if there is one in your area because all of the games are 60-80% off. Plus if you sign up for their email list there is an extra 15% off your entire purchase, including clearance items, coupon this week.

I bought all 6 of these games for $25. I can’t usually do much better at the thrift store and these are brand new. Not bad considering the Scene It games retail for $30 each. I also got some Pj’s that Abby needed, which brought my total high enough to qualify for $10 in Kohl’s cash that I plan to use next week to but two more of the games if they are still on sale (The cashier thought they would be) which would make 8 games for $25.

At least one will be going with my hubby tomorrow because he’s playing in a golf tournament to benefit Toys for Tots, but the others I can save for Christmas & birthday gifts. The Twilight game is going to elicit some major eye rolling from Eddie when I gently twist his arm into playing it with me tonight. (Hey, I couldn’t pass it up for 5 bucks.)

We had to break out the Cooties game right away. My sister and I used to play it with my Mommom when she would babysit us as kids. Nicholas loved it too. It is great for fine motor skills, colors, and counting practice. Plus it’s fun. 🙂

It was the first time he’s ever sat through an entire game.

I’m addicted to games. We have an entire 7 foot tall shelving unit in our basement stacked with board games. They are my second biggest vice, right behind hoarding children’s books. Are you a board game family? Which games are your favorite?

Quilted Flat Iron Cover

August 8, 2011 By: Stephaniecomment

How to make an adorable, quilted, and flame resistant flat iron cover,

That’s me and Abby with my dear friend Lauren. She is my oldest friend. We met in elementary school 20 years ago! (We are getting old, y’all.)

Lauren’s birthday was at the end of July and I wanted to make her something that she actually requested a while ago.

When we were in Nashville on our girl’s trip last year she was telling me about a problem she had while traveling. Lauren travels A LOT for business and for pleasure, as in over a dozen foreign countries in a year, and she was telling me about how she was constantly having to get ready in fancy hotel rooms paid for by her company. (Bummer, right? We all feel sooo bad for you, Lar.) But after she showered and did her hair in the morning she kept having to put her still-hot flat iron back into the suitcase so that she could check out of the hotel.

She asked me to make a cover for it.

I was like. “Sure, no problem.”

Then I hit a snag.

I wanted it to be heat/flame resistant for obvious reasons, but have you looked at flame resistant fabrics? They cost hundreds of dollars and are pretty much the ugliest fabric on Earth. The heat resistant sprays are also really pricey. Sorry, Lar, I’m not dropping 100 bucks on fabric for your flat iron cover. I guess I could just buy one, but that’s kind of a cop-out since she asked me to make it.

Hmmmm….

Duh! You know what is really cute, cheap, and flame resistant? Children’s pajamas!

(You can see the federal guidelines for flame resistant sleepwear here)

Now that I’ve done a little more research, I would make sure to buy size 9 months or larger. Kohl’s seems to be the best place to get them because they tell you when the pj’s are flame resistant. Some other companies (ahem, Tar-jay) only seem to label when clothes are not, which I didn’t find very helpful at all. Is a Sleep N Play specifically designed for sleeping? I don’t know. It says it’s also for playing, but it does say it’s for sleeping & it’s not labeled as not flame resistant…annoying.

Anyway, it’s a pretty easy project. I got it done in less than an hour.

Turn children's pjs into a flat iron cover

Just cut out the sides of the pj’s in a shape similar to your flat iron.

Next, unfold each side and insert a piece of quilt batting cut to size.

Then refold it, sew the sides shut, and do a little quilting action. (I’ve never quilted anything & mine turned out fine, so yours will too, promise. Just use a heavy duty needle on the machine because you need to go through a lot of layers.) I just did large random circles because that motif went with the fabric I chose. I wanted it to look Vera Bradley-esque.

You should have two identical quilted pieces. Now sew them together, leaving the top open. Then hem the top. I also used the trim from the pj sleeves to add a little loop that could be used for hanging or carrying.

Basically, it’s like a skinny oven mitt without the part for your thumb, so I guess you could also use this technique for making oven mitts if you could find large enough pj’s. Pretend kid-size oven mitts, anyone?

There you go. Now we can all make cute covers for our flat irons, curling irons, toasters, and whatever else you can think of. Just please be careful. I’m not liable if yours catches on fire.

The Entiltlement Trap

August 5, 2011 By: Stephaniecomment

Recently I was asked to serve on the advisory board for the upcoming book The Entitlement Trap by New York Times bestselling authors Richard and Linda Eyre.

The book will be available on September 6th, but you can pre-order a copy at a 33% discount on their website by clicking here (You will pay $12 instead of $18.) or you can pre-order on Amazon.com, where the Kindle addition is available.

I’m excited that a new book is being published addressing the issue of entitlement in children because as a former private school attendee, and especially as a teacher specializing in gifted students in an upscale area, it is something I have seen frequently: spoiled kids who believe they have the God-given right to have whatever they want, regardless of the consequences.

I try very hard as a parent to get my children to accept the word “no” because it’s an important life skill they will need as an adult. No, I’m not going to buy that if I would have to put it on a credit card. No, I’m not going to eat a second piece of cake even though I want it. No, I’m not going to take out a home loan that big even if the bank says I can afford it. (We all know where that one gets us.)

It’s easy for parents to fall into the trap of trying to “keep up with the Joneses.”

I had second graders whose cell phones would go off during class and a former employer of mine had three children, drove two brand new BMW’s but was worried about his house going under foreclosure and had to close his business. Parents of children who were not even in the gifted program would come to meetings to give their peers the false impression that their children were in the gifted classes, and one family even wrote into a local magazine complaining about my class (their daughter wasn’t gifted and I never even met her, let alone taught her) just to get their picture & false story published because having a child in the gifted program was a huge status symbol in our community. When children didn’t pass the tests the school gave, parents paid hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for private psychologists to issue the tests to their children, repeatedly, until they passed, never mind that Florida was in the middle of a horrific housing crisis and many of their home were under foreclosure or short sale.

Priorities, people.

The Entitlement Trap is about having them and how to set them for ourselves and for our children.

Of course, the examples I gave were pretty extreme. It can be something as simple as always offering to buy a candy bar or a small toy as a way to keep the kids quiet and well-behaved in the store. In a surprisingly short amount of time they come to expect it and the one time you decide not to buy it, you will be met with temper tantrums & tears.

This book is about setting ourselves up for success rather than failure.

I believe it’s always easier to do the right thing in the first place, and we have a responsibility to do right by our children.

You can visit the website here for more information.

**I will be compensated via a review copy of the book before it’s publication date, but all opions in this post are 100% mine.**

Best Deals of the Week

July 21, 2011 By: Stephaniecomment

July is a great time to stock up for the holidays because everybody is having clearance and Christmas in July sales. So far these are some of the best deals I’ve found this week:

Lands End is having a warehouse clearance event on their website, so prices are up to 70% off on everything from sheet sets to winter coats. I saw some hats and gloves around the $5 mark.

The Disney Store is having an online Family and Friends sale starting today and going through this weekend. You get an extra 20% off your entire purchase if you enter the code DISNEYFAN. (the website says disneyfan is the code, but the email they sent me says disneyguest) They have a lot of toys, plus some backpacks and lunchboxes in the clearance section, so it’s a good place for holiday or back to school shopping. I’m not sure if you can still get an additional 10% off if you pay with a Disney Visa.

Today and tomorrow, Old Navy is offering 30% off men’s and women’s styles (including maternity, score!!!) with the code ONBIG30. I finally bit the bullet and ordered some maternity jeans.

Finally, I know I will be stocking up on paint for my basement project this weekend because Sherwin Williams is offering 40% off paints and stains.

Happy Shopping!

That’s What I Get for Bragging About The Garden

July 19, 2011 By: Stephaniecomment

After my post yesterday about how our veggie garden is actually pretty successful this year I had a big, fat massive FAIL. A series of them actually…

I thought I would be all Martha-y and make some homemade tomato soup with all the tomatoes we were able to harvest. (There were 10 ripe ones for us to pick yesterday. Yay!) I’d never made tomato soup, so I looked up a few recipes and altered them to work with what I had. I’ll give you the recipe in a minute, but first I have to warn you that it might be cursed.

After I simmered the soup for about an hour, I transferred it to the blender. That was a big disaster. I was holding down the lid, but still managed to have burning hot soup shoot out like a volcano everywhere. Cabinets, counter, sink, stove, dog, me…you name it, it was covered in soup.

I cleaned that up and transferred what was left of the soup into the refrigerator, where I proceeded to knock it over. It had been on the top shelf, so it spilled all over eveything yet again.

Then as I was doing all the dishes I created in the soup fiasco, I dropped a ceramic plate. Of course it smashed into 1,000 pieces. Of course I was barefoot and stepped in one of them and cut myself.

Basically, yesterday I picked 10 tomatoes, 2 green peppers, some basil, defrosted homemade chicken stock, cooked for a few hours, and all I got was one measly bowl of soup and a HUGE mess. The soup was pretty good, but a little too spicy for my taste. Next time I’d leave out the red pepper flakes.

If you would like to try your luck (I hope yours is better than mine), here is the recipe:

Spicy Tomato Soup:
3 cups of chicken stock
10 tomatoes, seeded and smashed (strain juice, discard seeds, keep juice)
1 tbs fresh basil, chopped
1 diced green pepper
2 tbs brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste
optional: red pepper flakes
optional: diced onion & celery (I didn’t used these, but would if I had them on hand)

Combine ingredients on stove top and simmer for 45 min-1 hour
CAREFULLY transfer ingredients to blender and blend until smooth
Cool and store in refrigerator or freeze

U-G-L-Y, You Ain’t Got No Aliby

July 15, 2011 By: Stephaniecomment

You Ugly, yeah, yeah, You UGLY! (cheer courtesy of My Brother And Me, via Nickelodeon circa 1994)

I’m talking about you, “family room.”

Meet my latest project, the family room.

It would be the family room anyway, if the space was remotely usable or pleasant to be in.

Right now it is just a junk room, and a REALLY ugly one at that. Brace yourselves. I’m about to air our very messy little secret.

It’s bad, you guys. Really, really, really, bad. Like humiliating. Like an episode of Diet Hoarders; People Who Aren’t Actually Hoarders, Just Have One Awful Space With Too Much Junk. (In my defense, albeit a weak one, the piles on the sofa aren’t normally there and no longer exist, I took this picture right after we moved all of my crafting and sewing supplies down here.)

It’s sad, really, because this room has so much potential. The fireplace, the extra square footage we could be using, the potential for a craft area not located in the middle of the dining room…not to mention that my poor husband actually works here on the days he is working from home.

Dark scary hallway to oblivion…

Super messy entryway off the garage, currently filled with construction stuff from our bathroom remodel (I was standing in the doorway of the bathroom to take this photo) plus a gigantic chalkboard that they were giving away for free at the church yard sale.

We have a split foyer house, so we pretty much spend all of our time upstairs where the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms are located, and completely ignore the fact that we have an entire additional floor.

Until now we’ve just been telling ourselves that we’ll get to it eventually when we can afford a complete overhaul, as in new drywall, new electrical, and everything. I can’t live with that plan any more if this needs to be my creative space because I cannot possibly create anything worthwhile in a space with this kind of negative energy. Plus, it will probably be 5 years or more before we get around to that remodel and who knows if we will even still want to live here at that point. We’d have to at least give this area a facelift to be able to sell the house for a decent price in the future. Might as well do it now so we can reap the benefits as well, right? That’s what the nesting side of me is saying.

It’s ok, though, I have a plan.

There really is a lot of potential here. It’s a little easier to tell in the photo that was in the mls listing when we bought this place, see?

Right now the plan involves a lot of purging, painting the paneling, ripping out the carpet, and installing super cheap laminate from Ollie’s or Ikea. I was at Ollie’s yesterday and they had brand name (Pergo & Mohawk) flooring for as low as 68 cents/square foot.

Eddie is not thrilled with the plan & I don’t really blame him because he already has TONS of projects to do around here, but I told him I am doing this 100% by myself. I’m pretty sure he won’t trust me to install the floor alone (although I am totally confident I could, especially if I buy extra flooring to make up for the learning curve 😉 but I can definitely paint and take up the carpet during nap times.

As a matter of fact, I started yesterday. Just me, a good quality low voc primer (If I wasn’t pregnant with two little ones in the house I would be using some hard core products to tackle this task, but the Olympic interior latex primer is working really well so far.) and an hour of sleeping children got one wall primed. One wall at a time and it will be done eventually, right?

It’s going to be a long, slow process. I hope you’ll stick with me on the journey because it’s a pretty huge undertaking and I’m going to need your moral support! I will keep you updated along the way.

In other news, I’m happy to report that the downstairs bathroom (just to the right of the wall in this photo) now has a new working toilet and will hopefully have a sink by the end of this weekend! That means the big reveal will be coming soon!! 🙂

Best Deals This Week

July 8, 2011 By: Stephaniecomment

Everybody loves saving money, right?

Here are the best deals that I found this week.

You can get free dinner tonight at Chick Fil A because it is Cow Appreciation Day. Just download the printable mask from their website.

Tomorrow (7/9) from 8am-noon Old Navy will be having a grab bag sale in the store. You pay $20 and get a mystery bag filled with $100-$125 worth of clothes in your size. The consensus on their Facebook page seems to be that you can use a Groupon, so if you got the Groupon that was out a few weeks ago, you will only pay $10. It’s kind of risky because you can’t see the clothes until after you buy them, but I think I’m going to try it.

Canvas People are having their free 8×10 photo canvas sale again! You just pay the $14.95 for shipping. That’s expensive shipping, but an amazing deal on a photo canvas. You can also get discounted upgrades on larger sizes at checkout.

Also, we were pleasantly surprised to learn last week that our Regal Cinema has $5 movie tickets all day on Tuesdays. Eddie took Nicholas to see Cars 2 and was happy to learn that it only cost $10 for the two of them to see it. Apparently only participating Regal Cinemas are doing this, but call and ask yours if they are! Seeing new releases in the theater can get expensive!

Finally, Dress Barn is having 50% off a lot of their online merchandise, plus you get an extra $10 off if you buy two dresses.

I’m still on the lookout for a winter coat that will cover my 9 month pregnant belly come December, so let me know if you find any good deals on one! Link

We Built a Little Desk

June 28, 2011 By: Stephanie1 Comment

And by that I mean I built a little desk while the kids were in the next room watching Up. (I even managed to not drill into the table this time.)

Eddie said he wanted a laptop desk to take into the office and I found these plans on Ana-white.com. It looked super easy to build, plus it’s on hidden wheels. What’s not to love?

It cost less than $30 for the lumber, casters, and some wood filler. Not bad when you consider that CB2’s version is $180. I had the guys at Lowes cut the wood for me, but I wound up having to re-cut some of the trim pieces, so I figured out how to use our jigsaw, which was surprisingly easy. I think I have a new favorite toy. It took me about an hour and a half, counting numerous mommy stops, a phone call, and the mystery about why the trim wouldn’t fit. (I bought the wrong size board. duh. oops.)

Seriously, if you own a few tools (I built my first 3 projects using only a drill) you can build anything in the beginners section of Ana’s website. It honestly is easier than using a glue gun. I do really dumb things like buy the wrong wood and drill into my dining room table, and I’ve still managed to build this desk, a kid-sized table and chairs, and an airplane shelf from her site. You should really give it a try!

I can’t finish it myself because I think Eddie and I would both prefer it stained and I’m not comfortable working with those kind of fumes while I’m pregnant.

Link
So I guess it’s done for now.

I think our next Ana White project will be the open toy box.

What have you been up to today?

Binkies and Briefcases with Stephanie Giese
I know there is an overall feeling of helplessness in our country right now. So many of us are at a loss for what to do beyond making phone calls and social media posts (which are still important, but can feel like not enough). I believe strongly in the power of small things adding up to big ones. As one person, I might not be able to do much, but what I CAN do is use my voice and my books to work toward the change I’d like to see. That’s why, for the next five days, from Jan. 30-Feb 3, I’m making the Kindle versions of my entire North Bay series (Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base) completely free.
