Book Review: 75 Ways to Have More Fun at Home

October 4, 2012 By: Stephanie1 Comment

I’m so excited for the opportunity to share an awesome new book with you today!

Anna from My Life and Kids has released a brand new ebook filled with easy and inexpensive ways to have more fun with your kids at home.

I had the opportunity to preview an early release of the book last week and I can honestly tell you that it is awesome! It’s a very quick read and the best part is that you don’t have to be a Pinterest-perfect mommy to try any of them. They are very easy and most of them are free. Some might require everyday household objects, like a drinking straw. (Just wait until you see what Anna can teach you how to do with a straw! My 5-year-old’s life will never be the same.)

I loved that these ideas were great for both girls and boys and that it didn’t require any special planning on my part to inclue most of them in my day.

I think my favorite was the pajama bike parade. I can totally see us all riding down the street in PJ’s.

I also love the idea of celebrating our minivan’s birthday. I’ll be breaking out some streamers and balloons next June.

The best part is that the book is less than 5 bucks. Actually, it’s less than 4 bucks AND you don’t even have to own a Kindle or any other eReader.

Of course, you can buy the Kindle version if you want through Amazon here.

OR

You can download the pdf and print a hard copy for instant hands-on gratification here

Check out the reviews on Amazon before you buy. They speak for themselves.

It really is a great resource to have on hand, especially now that the winter months are closing in on us and we will be stuck inside floundering for ways to keep those little hands busy.

DIY {No Sew} Mary Poppins Costumes for the Whole Family

October 2, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Mary Poppins Costumes for the Whole Family

We are a family that does celebrate Halloween, but I’m not into encouraging my kids dress up like spawns of Satan just for some free candy.

We go for the more gentle, family-friendly costumes around here. In the past we have done a bumble bee, a lady bug, a monkey, a mermaid, a dinosaur, Nemo (the fish), and Dopey (of the Sven Dwarfs).

This year I wanted to do a common theme for all my kiddos and I came across a lot of really cute ideas on Pinterest.  By far my favorite for a group of three was this adorable idea for Mary Poppins costumes from Make It and Love It. (Those are home-sewn and she has tutorials for all of them!)
I had plans to use her tutorials to sew the kids’ costumes myself, but since we are in the middle of moving right now, all of my sewing stuff is packed away in storage.

I decided to go the traditional Mary Poppins route with the coat, hat, and umbrella instead. I love that this will keep my daughter nice and warm. Last year it was snowing here in PA on Halloween and she had to wear a turtleneck, hat, and gloves with her mermaid costume, which was not quite the look we were going for.

Mary Poppins {no sew}

Abby’s was the most complicated to piece together, but was still super easy once I found a hat that could work. The coat is a hand-me-down from an older cousin, but I bet you could find a nice dress coat at a thrift store or kid’s consignment store this time of year too.

The hat was originally a foam cowboy hat from the dollar store. I cut off the brim, turned the hat sideways, and added ribbon and a flower. (I used a glue stick to add the ribbon and just poked the flower through since the hat is made of foam)  Everything that I used for the hat came from the Dollar Tree. I bought the kid-sized umbrella there as well.

The bow/scarf is a fabric gift wrap bow that was on clearance at Target and the wig came from their Halloween section.

If I had my craft stuff available, I might also crochet her a scarf, but we’re calling this good enough for now.

Bert {no sew}

Nicholas will be trick or treating as Bert, the chimney sweep. He still needs a suit jacket (or I might just tuck in the hood of a dark sweatshirt jacket he already has). His shirt is from the dollar store and he already had those pants. The hat and broom are from Target. I also bought $1 black Halloween makeup at Target to dirty him up for the occasion.

Penguin{no sew}

I know it’s from an entirely different part of the movie and might not make as much sense as a group now, but I still liked the idea of having the baby be a penguin. Plus this might be the easiest DIY costume of all time.

It’s just a hat from the kids section at Target, a white onesie, and 2 pairs of tights.

I didn’t even have to cut the tights or anything. The pair on her legs is her regular size and the pair on her arms is 2 sizes too big. I stretched them out and put them on her like a shrug. The way she is sitting in the picture makes it look like her arms are pulled back, but I promise she still has free range of motion and she seemed perfectly comfortable. I might cut off the elastic top of that pair before Halloween just to be sure, though.

My favorite part of this costume is that every single piece can go right into her regular wardrobe. I hate shelling out a ton of money for Halloween costumes every year. When you have several kids it’s really easy for the costume budget to go sky high really quickly.

If your family celebrates Halloween, what are your costumes ideas this year?

Thanks for visiting the blog! I really appreciate all of your comments, pins, and shares.

If you liked this post, I hope you will also love:

Letters From Mommy

September 29, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

Do your kids ever say something outrageous or off the wall that you think you’ll never forget, but by the time you want to tell your husband or your mom about it later that night you already forgot?

I do that all the time!

That’s why earlier this year I started keeping a book of letters for each of my kids and I’m already so glad that I did.

I can already look back and see some funny moments I would have otherwise forgotten.

I want each of my kids to have memories recorded in my handwriting.

When they are old enough, I hope I continue this tradition and they can write letters in their notebooks as well.

It only cost about $1 to start this tradition for each child, but I know they will treasure these memories forever. I think they will like each having their own book of letters from mom. I made sure to buy the books in a “signature color” for each kid, so I wouldn’t mix them up and write a letter in the wrong book. (I can totally see myself doing that!)

Although I take about a million photos every week, I’m not a scrapbooker anymore. I’m glad to have a place to record our memories.

I think it’s so important when you have several kids to recognize each of them individually.  Do you have anything special that you do for each child?

Our Second Date: or How My Family Liked To Humiliate My Teenage Self

September 28, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

I’m pretty sure one of the main reasons Eddie married me is because my tendency to humiliate myself in public would make him seem so suave in comparison.

I mean, when you are standing next to someone who shows up at a wedding in the same dress as the bridesmaids, finds herself naked in front of a priest, or does, well, this, it would be hard not to look like the one who has it all together right?

Humiliating second date

Our second date should have given him a clue.  Bras were removed, public urination happened, and something very inappropriate happened at a restaurant table, but it was all very PG and probably not at all what you’re thinking. It was also super embarrassing for yours truly.

We were high school sweethearts, so we started “dating” before either of us could drive. That meant our dates were mostly either being dropped off at the mall or the movies or hanging out at each other’s houses.

One of those early “dates” was when Eddie was allowed to tag along to an out-of-town soccer tournament for my 11-year-old sister.

We drove about two hours and when we got there my sister discovered she had worn the wrong uniform. Oops. The one she was supposed to wear had those weird extra-long armholes that show your bra. Luckily she had the right shirt with her in her bag.

Except my sister hadn’t worn a bra, and 11-year-olds are too old to go flashing themselves to an entire park of middle-aged men standing around at a soccer tournament.

My parents made me take off my bra and give it to her.

The humanity.

It’s super awkward to be forced to take off your underwear through your clothes and hand it over to a relative, but I knew that 15-year-old Eddie probably thought it was kind of hot to know I was no longer wearing a bra, so I could have played that off.

But that’s not the only thing that happened. Oh no.

On the ride home (on which I still didn’t have my bra back because my sister had gotten it all sweaty and gross so I told her to just keep it, hoping my sacrifice would warrant a trip to 5.7.9 for some new clothes) my little brother, who was 4 at the time, announced that he needed to go potty. But we were on a fairly busy road in No-wheres-ville, PA.

Oh, no problem. We don’t want him to go outside because the road is too busy, but Steph has this lemonade she was drinking…

So my parents made me help my brother pee in my lemonade bottle in the minivan in front of my new boyfriend.

Seriously, they are all lucky I still speak to them.

Eddie was finding all of this hilarious, by the way.

When we got back to our hometown we stopped at a seafood restaurant for dinner. I believe this was the first time Eddie and I had gone out to eat together and I know it was the first time he had gone out in public with my family.

My sister got something stuck in her braces. Or maybe she broke her braces, I really can’t remember.

All I remember is that my parents made me use the toenail clippers I had in my purse and fix my sister’s braces in the middle of the restaurant. (I have no idea why I had toenail clippers in my purse, flip flop season?)

Up until that point, I thought it was the most humiliating day of my life. Lucky for me Eddie loved the fact that my family is never boring and he decided to stick around.

And eventually we learned to drive and we got far, far away. 🙂

House Tour

September 27, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

It’s official. Our house is on the market. (And if you want to buy it please email me and I will put you in touch with our realtor straight away!)

It’s a little bittersweet. We always knew that this wasn’t our forever house. It’s been a great house, but it was VERY dated when we bought it and we always wanted to own several acres of land. This house has a nice lot, about 1/3 of an acre, but we still wanted more space. Having a master bathroom wouldn’t hurt either.

This house has been good to us, though. This is where we brought both of the girls home from the hospital. It’s where we’ve had birthday parties and Gotcha Days and it’s where I became a stay at home mom. It’s also only a block or so away from a park, and in a good school district. Funny enough, one of the main reasons I fell in love with this house was because there are sidewalks on both sides of the street (surprisingly hard to find around here) and a big driveway. I really do appreciate being able to let the kids ride their bikes or push the stroller around the block and not have to worry about their safety. I remember that I kept saying to the realtor, “We can fix ugly, but sidewalks are a must. And no double yellow lines on the road.”  Also, the windows, roof, furnace, and hot water heater have all been replaced within the last 8 years.

Even though it was dated when we bought it, we’ve been able to update quite a bit over the last 3 (almost 4!) years. Hopefully another family will like the back yard, large room sizes, and great closet and storage space as much as we have.

It’s a split-foyer house, so when you walk in the front door, you see these stairs.

If you go up the stairs you come right into the living room.

Since we’ve lived here, in this room we exposed the hardwood floors, painted, added crown molding, replaced the trim around the windows, installed new doors & shelves in the coat closet, put a new light fixture in the entry, and Eddie & his dad replaced an old metal railing with these built-in shelves.  (We also exposed the wood steps, and replaced the floor in the foyer.)

On the other side of the wall where  our couch sits is our kitchen, which is finally FINISHED! (It only took 3 years) Literally everything in this room except the ceiling has been replaced. We replaced the cabinets, counters, appliances (all of which will be staying with the house), moldings, back splash, lighting, pantry door, paint, floor, and brought the electrical stuff up to code.

The kitchen stretches into the dining room, making one large space.

In this room we redid the floor, added the molding, and painted.

The sliding glass door in the dining room is how you access the back yard. There’s a small concrete patio at the bottom of a small stair case and then…

Our back yard has been by far one of our favorite parts of living in this house.

There is a hallway off of the dining room that leads to our main bathroom and 3 bedrooms.

This next picture is a blog exclusive. You won’t be seeing this in the mls listing. It’s my least favorite room in the entire house, but it has served us well.

We haven’t really done anything to update this room and sadly, it shows. The floor is not dirty, it’s just over 40 years old and worn out.  You can’t really tell from the picture, but it’s actually a pretty decent sized bathroom considering the age of the house. Hopefully the next owners will be able to update it because it has a lot of potential. We need to de-clutter this room now that we’re selling, but it’s hard when 5 people share 1 full bathroom and some of them are still potty training!

Nick’s room is across the hall from the bathroom. If it takes a while to sell the house, we will repaint it a more neutral color, but for now we figured the kids had enough change to deal with and we left their rooms alone.

There are two more bedrooms at the end of the hallway. The girls’ room is on the left.

The master bedroom is on the right. The only thing that designates it the master is that the closet is bigger. It’s not a walk-in, but is does extend almost the entire length of the wall, so we were pleasantly surprised to discover that it actually holds more than the smallish walk-in we had in our last house.

The only updates we’ve made in the bedrooms are paint, light fixtures, and a closet system in the girl’s room.  (Also, note to self: You have horrible taste when you are pregnant. Stop buying ugly grandma curtains and bright yellow paint.)

If you go downstairs, there is a door directly at the bottom of the steps that leads to a very large unfinished storage room. (The same size as our kitchen & dining room area) That’s where our laundry, furnace, and water heater are.

If you stop at the bottom of the stairs and turn left, you’ll find our family room. We’ve been using this as our homeschool room since Nick started kindergarten.

We’ve tried to update this space a little by painting the paneling and replacing the baseboard. The brown shag carpet wouldn’t have been my first choice (or 2nd, or 3rd…) but it is in really good condition and comfortable for the kids to play on, so we kept it.

There is also a large storage closet and crawl space off of this room.

If you turn right at the bottom of the steps, there is a small foyer and powder room. There is also access to the garage in this area.

The powder room is another area where we replaced everything except the ceiling.

That pretty much wraps up the tour. Want to see some before pictures?

Uh, yeah. I don’t know why we bought it either looking like that, but we did. Hopefully there will be a new family coming along soon who will be blessed by all of the hardwork, sweat and tears that went into this house.

Wish us luck!

Mommy & Me Tea Party

September 18, 2012 By: Stephanie2 Comments

Last year 5 moms from our Mom N Me group at church all had little girls within 6 months of each other. Over the weekend the first of those babies turned one!

Her mommy, Nicole, decided to have a special tea party just for the moms & babies. All of these little girls have older siblings, so even with 5 babies, it was a quiet and relaxed afternoon in comparison to our normal lives. 🙂

We let the girls crawl around, ate fancy finger foods, opened gifts, and chatted, stopping every once in a while to change a diaper or nurse a baby.

The menu was very reminiscent of our fancy tea at the Ritz Carlton.

-Finger sandwiches: roast beef with horseradish, cucumber and strawberry, and ham and cheese roll-ups
-Fruit salad
-Pumpkin scones (from the recipe here)
-Homemade cookies
-Raspberry lemonade
-Assorted teas
-Baby food

Mom’s place setting

Baby’s place setting

I really like how Nicole kept the decorations simple to focus on the birthday girl and the reason we were celebrating, rather than having a lot of character decorations or Pinterest-y favors.

As far as presents, because the birthday girl and her family will be leaving in just a few months to go on a mission trip that might last several years, no one went overboard with big, fancy toys or extravagant “stuff.” She received a DVD for the long plane ride, a new bathing suit and tea party book, and Nicole and I had talked ahead of time about having a family photo shoot for them before they leave.

In addition to some much-appreciated baby food we got to take home as favors, we also each received a binder with a picture of the birthday girl in it and several page protectors. We will be keeping in touch through email and letters and the binder will be a book to keep all of those communications and pictures throughout the years that Birthday Girl is away. We want her to have a connection to the girls in her age range whenever she returns.
We tried having the girls pose for pictures for their books.

This is what Penny thought of that idea.

Shortly after her mini-meltown, it was time to head home. 🙂

How to Paint Paneling

August 27, 2012 By: Stephanie5 Comments

One of the things we are doing to prepare to put our house on the market is to update the very dated wall paneling in our lower level.

This stuff is nasty. It’s not even real wood. It’s a shiny, plasticy, fake version of wood that has seen better days since it was first installed sometime in the late 60’s.

Here is a before picture, mid-remodel and pretty messy. Sorry.

This is that same corner after I painted the paneling and cleaned up a little. (I built that shelf all by myself, aren’t you proud of me?)

I did this section of our basement about a year ago and it has held up very well, despite daily use. There hasn’t been any peeling or chipping.

I will tell you that it is a giant pain in the you-know-where.

There are many ways you can go about painting over paneling, but a lot of them involve pretty nasty chemicals and strippers. I was pregnant and I had two toddlers in the house when I started this project, so those methods were quickly crossed off my list. This is the method I used.

Step 1: Wipe down the walls with a damp rag to remove any dust or residue.

Step 2: Use a high quality zero VOC adhesion primer. I used the Olympic brand from Lowes. Unfortunately, I found that I had to use a paint brush for this entire process because, no matter what kind of roller I tried, it either splattered or wouldn’t get into the spaces in between the panels. Don’t be scared because the first coat looks terrible. The most important thing is to get the cracks between the walls completely covered. Some people caulk the cracks and sand them for the look of a flat wall, but I actually like the texture of the paneled look. (Plus, I’m lazy.)

The Olympic primer worked great but I found that I had to wait at least 24 hours in between coats or else it would start to clump and peel off the wall while I was applying the second coat.

Step 3: After 24 hours, apply the second coat

Step 4: Wait another day and apply the 3rd coat

Step 5: Paint. It took me three coats of primer and 3 coats of paint until I was satisfied.

I’ve been working all weekend on the paneling in the rest of our lower level. I hope whoever buys this house appreciates all of this work. I wish I would have sucked it up and done this 3 years ago so that our own family could have enjoyed a prettier space.

C’est la vie.

I think it’s 100% prettier than it was before.

Window Shopping: Mom’s Wish List

August 24, 2012 By: Stephaniecomment

Nick is on vacation with my mom and Eddie is playing in a golf tournament today and a volleyball tounament tomorrow. I, on the other hand, am deep in the throes of potty training a certain little diva and dealing with a baby who has a hairy conniption if I am out of her sight for more than two nanoseconds or if she isn’t being held by me and only me. Ah, the separation anxiety phase.

So, basically I’m confined to my house and need to come to terms with the fact that the next few days are going to be spent balancing a baby on my hip while I wipe warm urine off my dining room chairs.

Needless to say, my mind is elsewhere.

Let’s go shopping, shall we? (But not in real life, k? Because I’m a little broke right now.)

Besides, Momma has a birthday coming up and I can dream. Maybe my husband will take a not-so-subtle hint and get me that loaf pan?

A Kindle Fire:

My awesome husband bought me a regular Kindle for Christmas and I love it, but that was before we decided to cyber school & I think having the Fire would be a great resource for accessing our online school from anywhere, as well as a bunch of free books and educational games. Plus, it’s way cheaper than an IPad.

Temp-tations loaf pan

You know you’re getting old when you start fantasizing about a loaf pan. But seriously, I’ve never had a loaf pan and that’s just dumb because I cook and bake a lot. (I usually use two miniature ones that came as part of another set.) I collect Tempt-tations dishes and this one is under $20 and it comes with a pretty cool drip pan insert.

I also think this set is awesome (and it swivels) but I’m not sure where I would store it.

Tastefully Simple Rhubarb Strawberry Fruit Spread

This sounds stupid, but I went to a Tastefully Simple party last week at my friend’s house and, even though I bought a bunch of other stuff, I didn’t shell out for this fruit spread. We tried it and it was really good, but $8 just seemed like too much for what is essentially a jar of jelly. I’ve been regretting that decision ever since. I’m having my own party next month, so hopefully I can earn a  free one for myself. 🙂

Fitzwell Boots

Even in high school, when I was a size 2, my calves were always too big for tall boots. I’ve heard very good things about these boots from other ladies who are similarly well-endowed in the lower leg area. I would love to have a pair for fall, but I’m not comfortable forking over that much cash for shoes I can’t even try on in person.

A Silhouette Cameo

It’s a digital craft cutter that you can hook up to your computer. It will cut vinyl, paper, or even fabric into any shape or font that you could possibly imagine. It’s also super expensive. (But no matter what, don’t pay full price because there are ALWAYS discount codes on popular blogs that take off a pretty significant chunk of change.) My plan is to continue entering every giveaway in blogland until I finally win and get my hands on one. So far…no dice.

What’s on your wish list these days?

That Time My Grandfather Climbed In Bed With Another Woman (By Accident)

August 22, 2012 By: Stephanie3 Comments

What better way to follow up my most embarrassing stories then with another family classic? This one is about my grandfather. I’m running out of my own stories since I can only publicly humiliate myself so many times.

This is one of my absolute favorite family stories:

My grandfather

My grandfather was a pretty awesome dude. He was an Army veteran, a professional baseball player, and a police officer.  He never liked to talk about his service in World War II, but he was a war hero. He stormed the beaches at Normandy (June 6, D-Day, happened to be on his birthday) and received a battlefield commission at Remagen Bridge. He played an important role in liberating Germany. When he came home he was a baseball player for a few years before becoming a police officer who busted illegal bootlegging operations. How many cool careers can one guy have in a lifetime? Seriously, if they made a movie about it, people would think the coolness of his character was too far-fetched.

He passed away when I was 14. He never talked about the war or his time as a drug and alcohol buster-upper with me, as those topics were not appropriate for little girls. What he did like talking about was his baseball stories. He had tons of stories, but this one was my favorite:

For a few summers he was playing for the minor league team in Elmira, New York. My grandmother and their two young girls (my aunts, my dad wasn’t born yet) would stay in Elmira with him during the playing season and they would rent an upstairs apartment from an elderly woman in town. The elderly woman lived downstairs. During the off season they lived in Baltimore to be close to family.

The year my Aunt Cathi was a newborn, my grandfather had an away game and while he was gone the elderly lady offered to switch apartments with my grandma. These were the days before air conditioning and the downstairs apartment was cooler for the baby, plus then the young mom wouldn’t have to worry about getting two small kids up and down all the steps.

These were also the days before cell phones and the team was traveling by bus, so there was no way for them to notify my grandfather. They couldn’t very well have a letter delivered to a traveling bus.

You know where this is going.

He came home late one night after everyone was asleep. They weren’t expecting him until the next day. He was trying to be as quiet as possible so he didn’t wake up the baby. He went upstairs, in the dark (again trying not to wake the kids) and undressed thinking he was climbing into bed with the wife he hadn’t seen for a while. Ahem.

Instead he was met with the screams of his elderly land lady.

When Poppop told he story he would always reenact the way he jumped out of bed, yelled, “PARDON ME, MADAM!” grabbed his clothes, and got out of there as fast as he could.

And that is why, to this day, I like to say “Pardon me, Madam!” to break the tension in awkward situations. 🙂

I know it’s a small thing, but I believe small things can add up to big changes. my entire North Bay series, including Out of Left Field, Right as Rain, and Way Off Base, is free on Kindle from Jan. 30-Feb. 3. Please take the funds you might have spent on my books this week and reallocate them toward the areas in our country that need them the most. Follow creators like Dad Chats who can direct you toward practical needs local to them. I hope my quirky romcoms can bring you some comfort and joy during difficult times, and I hope together we can take small, practical steps toward big changes. ... See MoreSee Less

Art has power, and I do hope these comedies can bring you some comfort and joy in difficult times, but most importantly, I also hope you’ll consider redirecting the funds you might’ve spent on my books and donating instead to one of the many charities working tirelessly in our cities right now. If you are located in an area like Minnesota or Portland, please use the space below to make people aware of the organizations in your area that need help. ... See MoreSee Less
