One of my favorite parts about being a writer is being able to collaborate with other artists, like when I worked with the talented illustrator Dindo Contento on my children’s book, The Cookie Jar Parable.
Last year my friend Nicole came to me and said that she needed me to write lyrics for a modern Christmas carol so that she could perform it the church’s Christmas Eve service. Nicole serves as the Worship Arts Coordinator for very large church. She said wanted to try to collaborate to write a song that was more realistic than most of the Christmas carols we hear on the radio today and tried to capture some of the enormity of Christmas.
Together we came up with a song that we called “Crowning Moment.” It was the first song that we wrote together, but we have written several more since and my husband has even started playing in a band with Nicole and her husband. I hope that this first Christmas song that Nicole and I wrote last year can continue to be a gift to you in some way this holiday season. Watch the video below to hear Nicole sing the song that we wrote together. Hopefully as we run around wrapping gifts, shopping, and stressing about preschool parties, this can be a reminder to take a minute to slow down.
Crowning Moment by Nicole Seiberling and Stephanie Giese
A tiny head on dirty straw
Cries the tears that cleanse us all
A mother holds Him to her chest
In this moment, the world is blessed
History’s altered, knees will bend
For this little boy that Heaven sent
God on Earth in human form
And in this moment, the world’s reborn
Emmanuel, God is here
Hope is near
Our cries rose to Heaven
As His fell down
God claimed His crown
A tiny barn in Bethlehem
Cradles the King of Abraham
A mother’s boy with sleepy eyes
A lamb born to die
And all the King’s men sent out with spears
Angels and wise men draw so near
Our God cries human tears
And in this moment time stopped here
Emmanuel, God is here
Hope is near
Our cries rose to Heaven
As His fell down
God claimed His crown
Emmanuel, God is near
Hope is real
Eyes rose to Heaven
Our knees fall down
Reclaim Your crown
Emmanuel, God is here
Hope is real
