Penny came home from preschool this week with this adorable candy cane thumbprint gift she made with her class.
She decided to give hers to my mom, who moved in with us this year. I thought it was adorable and such a thoughtful gift to make with kids because it can actually be used all year, not just around the holidays. I’m not sure where our teacher found this idea, I searched Google and Pinterest and the closest thing I could find was this post. If it is an original Ms. K idea, then the kudos go to Penny’s teacher (who, to my knowledge, does not have a blog of her own).

I was not there when Penny’s class created their potholders, so I don’t know if they used these exact brands or methods, but if I was recreating this project at home, I would recommend using:
Materials:
Pot holders in a dark color, like black so that the contrasting white paint in your candy cane will show up well.
Permanent, washable fabric paints. This brand is also nontoxic. Just make sure to wash it off right away after you help your child with his/her fingerprints.
A silver or white fabric marker for writing the name and date on your pot holder.
Our potholders came with a copy of an adorable poem attached.
I like that this project was one that could be done with preschoolers and their fingerprints, but could also be aged up for older kids who wanted to paint more complicated designs. Maybe you could do your fingerprints in lots of colors and string them together with your marker to look like Christmas lights, or maybe you could paint the outline of a Christmas tree and the fingerprints could be the ornaments. The possibilities are pretty endless.
