How to make a homemade snow globe in a milk bottle. What a cute winter craft! Love the pencil trick.

When I was a classroom teacher, every year it was hard to think of a gift that the kids could make for their parents. One year we made miniature snow globes in upcycled baby food jars, and they turned out to be really cute! If you have ever wondered how to make a snow globe at home (And who hasn’t? Just kidding.) then this post is for you.

This craft is inspired by the snow globes that I made with my former students.

To make homemade snow globes you will need all of the following products. I will to link to some of them on Amazon with my affiliate links so that they are easy for you to find.

How to make a snowglobe at home

Supplies:

  • waterproof glue
  • glass bottle or jar
  • miniature ornaments (no wood or fabric)
  • glitter
  • water

Directions:

Step 1- Place waterproof glue liberally on the bottom of your ornament.

Step 2- Carefully slide your ornament (on its side) into place in the bottom of your jar, not letting the glue touch until it gets to the bottom. I like to use a pencil to help guide it.

Step 3- If you are using more than one ornament, repeat until they are all in place on the bottom of the jar, then use the pencil to press them down firmly for a few minutes.

Step 4- Wait a few hours for the glue to dry. You may find you have to repeat step 3 if something came loose, just be patient.

Step 5- Very gently fill your bottle or jar with water and add glitter.

Step 6- Use your waterproof glue to attach the lid back onto your jar or bottle.

I do not expect these snow globes to be a keepsake that I will eventually hand down to my children. I know that these homemade snow globes are not commercial grade. Eventually the metal ornaments I chose might get a little rusty under the water, or the paint may wear away a bit, but I am okay with that. For now my homemade snow globe is enjoying its place on our mantle, and it was fun to show the kids how we could make these whimsical crafts ourselves.

If you are making this craft with children, please note that the glue is very strong and it is best to have an adult do that part of the process. Kids could help fill the bottle with water, add glitter, or pick out which ornaments to use.
