This week we made a new sew American Girl doll skirt, and we’d love to show you how to make one too. It was easy enough for my seven-year-old to make several by herself.
Abby is getting VERY into American Girl dolls lately. She loves getting the catalog in the mail and circling things for her wish list. She is also my arts and crafts lover. We have signed up to do a craft fair together next month. I showed her the technique for this simple no sew ballet skirt and she is able to make the entire thing by herself. Pretty impressive for second grade!
This is a great project for kids because it is easy enough for my seven-year-old to do by herself and it is also a quick one. No patience required!
Start by cutting some old t-shirts into thin strips. The length doesn’t really matter, the longer your strips, the longer your skirt will be. If you decide they are too long, you can always trim the skirt later.
Then cut a piece of ribbon 24 inches long. PRO TIP: Cover the ends of your ribbon with some clear nail polish to keep it from fraying.
Then watch Abby’s video to see the technique for how she loops and ties the t-shirts strips onto the ribbon.
These skirts will work for any 18″ doll, and you can even cut a longer piece of ribbon and longer t-shirt strips to make a matching skirt for the girl who owns it.
Leave several inches free of t-shirt strips when you get to both ends of the ribbon so that you will be able to tie your skirt around your doll’s waist.
It’s a fun project that would also make an awesome, inexpensive birthday or holiday gift.
Let me know if you make one! Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today, and as always we really appreciate your pins and shares.
We have also been loving the blog American Girl Ideas for all sorts of fun and unique ideas. They have a tutu using a similar technique and tulle.
